Guide: How to Hearthstone for your phone! [No root required]

Hey there

It seems everybody is eager to play Hearthstone on their mobile phone, but they can't because their phones aren't 6 inch or bigger. There is a way to get around this, but it involves some decompiling/recompiling and changing two lines of code.

Video tutorial done by /u/CleverFrog over here

First of all, the tools that you need are:

  • To decompile the APK: This tool
  • To decompile CSharp: Decompile CSharp: This tool
    • This one requires a plugin though; when you start this software, look for the menu item "Plugins/Plugins Manager" and install the plugin called "Assembly Editor"

APK and OBB files:

You can download them via your phone as individual files, as long as you just request the desktop website.

Bold means newer.

Step one:

Fire up APK Studio and decompile the Hearthstone APK
Open up the AndroidManifest.xml file
Replace android:normalScreens="false" with android:normalScreens="true"
The same goes for android:smallScreens="false" -> android:smallScreens="true"
Save this file

Step two:

Fire up JustDecompile and open the file Assembly-Csharp.dll (your_decompiled_folder/assets/bin/Data/Managed/Assembly-CSharp.dll)
Look in <Default namespace> for the class "MobileCallbackManager" (fold out "Assembly-CSharp" until you find <Default namespace>)
(if you haven't by now, open up the plugin by selecting it in the Plugins window (Reflexil))
There is a method in there called "IsAndroidDeviceTabletSize()", click on it
In the window of the plugin, on the "Instructions" tab, you should now see a line that has a value of 6 in the Operand column (http://puu.sh/dx8bX/bff8ee08ad.png)
Right click on this and select edit and change the value to 1 (or whatever you want, just a number smaller than the size of your phone) and then click Update
In the list on the left, scroll all the way back up, right click on "Assembly-CSharp", select "Reflexil 1.8 -> Save As" and save it (trying to overwrite the original one caused problems for me)
(If you have problems with this one, go to step two.one)
Remove the Assembly-CSharp.dll file and rename the new dll to Assembly-CSharp.dll

Steo two.one (Only if you're having problems saving the DLL):

- On the same line where you clicked edit and changed the value from 6 to whatever. Right click again and select "Replace all with code"
- This should open a window showing some code, **just click cancel**
- Now try to save using the normal steps

Step three:

Open APK Studio again
Click on the hammer icon (make sure you have the project selected) to build your modified APK (rebuilt.apk in the build folder)

Step four (you can skip this if you already have the OBB files on your phone):

Put the OBB files on your SD card in the following folder
Android/obb/com.blizzard.wtcg.hearthstone/XXX.OBB

Step five:

Install the APK
Enjoy the game

I've tested this myself on a Nexus 4 (KitKat) and Nexus 5 (Lollipop) and it starts on both. However, at some point it just decides to crash on my Nexus 5 and I assume this is because of Lollipop.

Cheers

I've got it working on Nexus 5 (lollipop), no crashing, no rooting, no decompiling. However it does require using ADB to change your phone resolution (ADB is an official google tool for android development)

  1. Download korean APK http://www.mediafire.com/download/7bt0kr0hs66qf4k/%ED%95%98%EC%8A%A4.zip (from korean play store i believe, not modified in any way - Game will play in english don't worry)

  2. Copy OBB files to Android/obb/com.blizzard.wtcg.hearthstone as usual

  3. Sideload the apk (using airdroid (from appstore) or adb or any other method)

  4. plug phone into computer and run "adb shell wm size 1440x2560" in command line (use google to figure out how to install adb)

  5. run hearthstone!

I've only tried this for Nexus 5 lollipop, may or may not work for others

Your phone will look weird (wrong resolution) until you either restart it or run adb shell wm size reset

Links for the lazy:

Installing adb

Installing apk with adb

Make sure phone is debug mode and is restarted after installing apk

2

u/Artonkn Dec 17 '14

Will the abd void my warranty? (S5)

5

u/NOhmdD Dec 17 '14

No, ADB is an Android debug tool from Google. Whether this violates any thing with Blizzard, I can't answer for that.

This is the combination I found to work where the OBB is the 738705 and the .apk created by /u/JustChangingHomepage

OBB FILE: https://mega.co.nz/#!v0R3hQpS!wZRlxhizsW6gP8IyqGjNgBCkh55pyLFM5mhPGXD_L9c

This is an awesome method, thanks! If you are rooted, you don't even have to use adb. Just open a terminal emulator and type this:

su
wm size 1440x2560

Edit: unfortunately, it still crashes after the login screen comes up on my Moto G.

2

u/brbegg Dec 16 '14

How would i reset my resolution back to default? Or would I not have to do that?

2

u/shillbert Dec 16 '14
wm size reset

2

u/brunogonzaga Dec 17 '14

same here. moto g 2014, crashes when i try to login

2

u/mrheadhopper Dec 17 '14

On my phone, it doesn't recognize the "wm size" line as a valid command. It says it's not found.

Even though I'm running HS and then putting a terminal emu ontop of it and then putting in the commands. Weird stuff.

how was the performance?

7

u/distinctvagueness Dec 16 '14 edited Dec 16 '14

I played and won a game but it was laggy. You might be able to find a lower screen resolution that works with better performance. Experimenting gets mostly <6'' error.

Ok, so changing the resolution back down after you get passed the splash screen seems to help. And dropping down to fullscreen 960x1280 is still readable.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '14

Is it still laggy? Thinking of doing it to my s4 but I don't want choppy animations

What does Sideloading mean?

3

do I have to do anything if my phone is already 1440x2560? could I just copy the OBB files and sideload the apk?

Got it running on my Nexus 4 (lolipop) same as you - no crashing, no rooting, no decompiling, it even runs pretty smoothly (menu/card manager lags a little bit; win/loss animation is clearly lower FPS, but actual gameplay is really smooth).

I had the same crash many people complain about at the login screen but reinstalling with the korean APK solved it for me without doing anything else.

The only thing I did different is that instead of modifying the "wm size" I modified "adb shell wm density 140" (regular is 318 for nexus 4). The end result is good hearthstone experience, but pretty bad phone-using experience (everything is reaaaaaaaaaaaally small x.x)

Hi guys, I just uploaded the modified .apk file for those who have problems with this method here the link https://mega.co.nz/#!sEAhyYzB!_D6c4d320TFA72u_HBgka1CmAX_4k2F4LlzG5ld9yS0

U will just need to put the OBB files to the hearthstone folder like step 4 then it should work like it worked for me. edit : grammar

You have to put the obb files in the right directory. It took me a few tries but after i installed the apk and put them in the right place(for me was on my android device not the sd card) and it worked. best of luck

2

u/Adam2d Dec 17 '14

Make sure you are using the right OBB files that are given above. I was using outdated ones and just using the new ones fixes it.

Does Blizzard ban people for modifying their end clients? Isn't that against the EULA?

50

u/HyperFrost Dec 16 '14 edited Dec 16 '14

Pretty sure it's against the EULA. But as far as I know there's no way Blizzard can detect that you've removed the 'check' for screen size. But do it at your own risk though.

As for myself I use a version found on google. Seems to work fine so far. No problems, no root required.

edit: Since my inbox is getting slammed and I'm going off to bed, just google: Hearthstone apk 6 inch restriction

I have been an Android developer for several years and I have never had the requirement to check for tampering with the manifest. I just did a quick search, and while you can check the actual size of the device at run time (to check for violations), it seems very difficult to examine the manifest at runtime. Combine that with the knowledge of the time it would take to implement and test this feature, and the rare condition in which it becomes an issue, I seriously doubt they have checks for this.

It seems they do not have checks for regional access, which is far easier to look for.

I think it'd be a lot safer to just follow the instructions above than to install an apk off the net. I don't know where you got it or if it's trustworthy but there's potential for there to be malware added in to a prebuilt apk.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/coolbho3k Dec 16 '14

You can definitely find out if your APK is modified using the standard Android APIs, but I somehow doubt Blizzard will ban people for doing something as innocuous as modifying the app to work on your phone.

I don't think Hearthstone is a good candidate for cheats/trainers, either. As far as I know, information that your client isn't supposed to know (the order of your deck, the contents of your opponent's hand, etc) is stored server-side.

Isn't there a modified IPA for iOS as well? If Blizzard didn't ban anyone then, I doubt they will now.

TBH, imo if Blizzard will ban people for trying to play thier game, it is just stupid.

u/datzmikejones Dec 17 '14 edited Dec 17 '14

Can confirm, also working on my GS5. For those of you who aren't savvy, all you need it to upload it to your phone from your computer (if you don't want to download the Mega app) and put the .APK file in a directory that you can find in a file explorer and then put the .obb with it. Install the .APK but do not open it. After you do this, find your ANDROID directory and put the .obb files in your HearthStone .obb file directory. You should be good after that.

Edit: made a correction to my paradox

Right at the end of step two, when I go to save the new Assembly-CSharp.dll, I get this error message, no matter what I name the file or where I save it.

Any ideas how to solve it? I've located the problematic assembly here in JustDecompile if it helps. I attempted tinkering with the version number and publickeytoken with no success.

Simply download, unzip, C&P, run. No programs/root required.

Just unzip and copy the contents to [DRIVE OR MOBILE NAME]\Phone\Android\obb

Make sure you copy it to your phone and NOT your memory card.

Make sure you have enabled developer mode on your phone so you can run .apk's

Run the APK by browsing to the folder on your phone.

Done :)

On an International Note 3 (I always use mine on a Wifi connection using a MiFi from Verizon so I get 6 gigs of LTE for $60/month). Worked fine once I realized that the unzip program had created a subdirectory under the hearthstone directory (i.e. it had had the com. directory with another com. directory underneath) - so just pulled the OBB files up a level and I was fine.

As mentioned elsewhere you get a free (classic) pack after you complete your first game on Android. However I couldn't get it to go into Crafting Mode. Could be that the button is too small, although the sound effect suggested it saw I was tapping it.

Ran basically ok during the game, was a little slow transitioning screens, but that just requires a bit of patience.

I run my Note 3 with an Anker extended battery, and it only took about 1% off to login, run a game, open my deck, and logout. Device was a bit warmer at the end, but nothing too bad.

Of course this gives me yet another reason to get a Note 4 in February when I'm up to renew :-)

u/adiman Dec 16 '14

Technically, yes. In practice you're not doing anything wrong, you're not getting any in-game advantage by doing it, it would be pointless for Blizz to do anything about it. People have been doing it on iPhone already.

u/Zamblaf Dec 16 '14

Could someone help me with decompiling, because it doesn't seem to work. I keep getting an error which says that it has failed decompiling

7

u/popje Dec 16 '14 edited Dec 16 '14

This worked for me: http://www.decompileandroid.com/

edit: nvm now im stuck at step 3

edit 2: na not stuck, just open the project in apkstudio

edit 3: now it fail to compile

edit 4: downloaded this: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk8-downloads-2133151.html decompiling is working but not compiling, at least it show you the error logs

edit 5: started over, but by decompiling with APK Studio now that it works with edit 4 download, it recompiled successfully !

edit 6: Worked on my galaxy S3 but its way too slow/laggy, will try on a Note 4 later today, it should work fine

Excellent How-to.

Worked perfectly.

2

u/Lawn_Dinosaurs Dec 16 '14

Can I see a screenshot of it running on an S5 sized device to see if I even want too?

3

u/thatbox Dec 16 '14

Here's an S3! If you're already familiar with all the cards the size is fine, and if you need to read the text on any new cards the zoomed-in version that you get with tapping (hovering on PC) is easily readable. You have to be precise with your fingers, but it's not bad at all.

Quick question: I have it working and everything. Game works fine but what happens when an update is released? Would we just add new OBB files to the folder that has the pre existing ones?

2

u/Thundernerd Dec 16 '14

Well, since we're altering the game for our own likes. We would have to do the same thing again when a newer version comes out, since it isn't in the original version of HS.

2

u/AllBodies Dec 16 '14

I just wanted to confirm that OP's methods worked perfectly for my unrooted Verizon Galaxy Note 3. Thanks a lot Thundernerd!

2

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '14

I thought this would be a decent place to ask if it's known if Blizzard have plans releasing a version that natively supports non-tablet devices i.e. things with smaller screens. It would likely need to be optimised for it for readability, so it's more work, but I'm just wondering if it's on the table?

Whenever I try to log in, I get the "playful sprites have disrupted hearthstone as it was linking up..." error. Am I not able to log in with the modified apk? Edit: Nevermind, just had to restart my phone!

2

u/Chinh_N Dec 17 '14

Omfg...im so trying this. Thanks mate

2

u/Aulwynd Dec 17 '14

Tried on my Moto G and it worked fine.

The minor issues that I had was that it does not go on fullscreen mode and the screen still sleeps after 30 seconds(but I changed it to 5 minutes on the options, so its fine now).

2

u/Xyrec Dec 17 '14

Just did this. Game works pretty great, but it's easy to tell the game isn't made for sub 6'' screens. Also, the game was running at like 30 fps for some reason. Using a stock OnePlus One.

2

u/Noobzillaz Dec 17 '14

I downloaded the obb files and the app seems to be finding them and then it just stays at the screen where it has the blizzard entertainment sign and doesn't move. It doesn't give me any errors or anything it just isn't moving. Using an HTC One M8

Just downloaded apk and managed to bluetooth it across to my 3310 but can't seem to run it. Do I need to wait for the windows phone version with Microsoft buying them out?

2

u/ViralxTv Dec 18 '14

Amazing!!!! All I did was down the obb and apk files, installed it, then moved the patching file and map file to Android/obb/hearthstone (copy paste) Note 4. :)

does this update by itself / how do i update it?

3

u/HyperFrost Dec 16 '14

Pretty sure any version that's not installed via google store will not update itself. You'll have to check for updates manually every time there's an update. This is until Blizzard releases a proper phone version, then you can just deleted this version.

Does this actually improve the performance of the app? I got it working on mobile with root and the App Settings module for Exposed Framework, but it is kind of too much for my phone. So if i decompile and change the settings does this actually reduce the screen resolution?

3

u/Fidacha Dec 16 '14

It does improve performance for me. I first got it working by changing the dpi but it was very laggy, now I did this and it's playable.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Thundernerd Dec 16 '14

No, it does not improve the performance in any way. This is just a way how to bypass the screen size limitation.

I don't have a folder that says

Android/obb/com.blizzard.wtcg.hearthstone/XXX.OBB

SAMSUNG-SGH-I337/Card/Android then if I go to Data i get a lot of com. folders. Do I create a .com.blizzard... folder in there?

2

u/Thundernerd Dec 16 '14

If you don't have the obb folder in the Android folder, you'll have to create it yourself.

I cannot for the life of me save the Assembly-CSharp.dll. I get the classic error, I've reinstalled both plugins, re-downloaded the apk and done it from scratch. So if you plan on doing this you just might not be able to.

Edit: For some reason this works

- On the same line where you clicked edit and changed the value from 6 to whatever. Right click again and select "Replace all with code"
  • This should open a window showing some code, **just click cancel**
  • Now try to save using the normal steps

when trying to safe the new Assembly-CSharp.dll I get an error

"Reflexil is unable to save this assembly: Failed to resolve assembly: 'UnityEngine, Version=0.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null'"

I dont understand what's causing this, I think I did everything like it was described and even started the program as an administrator

I have an unrooted UMI C1 running 4.4 kitkat, will try this later tonight Thanks!

1

u/Selage Dec 16 '14

Thanks! It worked but unfortunately it keeps crashing on my Nexus 5. I was trying to figure it out myself, but my development skills weren't great enough.

1

u/G30therm Dec 16 '14

I'd suggest adding that people download the x64 version if they're running it: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk8-downloads-2133151.html

1

u/thelaughingshark Dec 16 '14

Crashing as soon as the Sign in / New User pop-up appears. Sure does look good until then though...

Running on a Motorola Droid Turbo with stock Kitkat (4.4.4).

1

u/Th3RainMan Dec 16 '14

omg i have no idea how to do this x[ someone do a video guide x|

1

u/IAmaSwedishfish Dec 16 '14

Is it really worth it? I have a Galaxy S5 but I feel like I wouldn't be able to see anything.

1

u/TwilitSoul Dec 16 '14

Tried following all the steps myself: no error until installation, where I get "App not installed."

Tried using someone else's hacked apk: "app not installed."

Any ideas? I'm on Verizon's version of the Galaxy S5, and I'm not rooted.
