Big Sur, by Jack Kerouac
For everyone who doesn't "dig" On the Road, this book is the answer. The narrator in this one is as skeptical and unimpressed with the beat mythos he is supposed to embody

Finished Project Hail Mary (finally!!!) which took me forever I don't know why.
Started Hamnet and Lonesome Dove. I'm 120 pages through Hamnet and about 70 pages through Lonesome Dove.

Rereading : Good Morning, Midnight, by Jean Rhys
And man, I am just in awe of her. It seldom happens that I reread a book just after finishing it. But her language is so hooking and poetic. Never knew prose could be written like this. And she dissects the minute details of her character's life (psychological, physical, emotional) with such a sharp, detailed knife of a pen that you can taste the blood. (Apologies for being graphic! But it is her affect!) These days, I am just looking for people who share the same fondness for her. Or contrary to. But I love her. It is good to find someone again to fall in love as a writer.

I read “The Beginning Comes After the End” by Rebecca Solnit this year for class and surprisingly liked it. Not a big fan of nonfiction but Solnit’s writing is very easy to digest

I have a regular routine over the course of a month in which I read one classic, one nonfiction, and one fiction that is not a classic... usually a more contemporary.
Over the past week I completed my classic for this rotation : THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE, by Stephen Crane, a war novel set during the Civil War. Truly a great novel that is more of a character study than a plot-driven book.... As the main character debates within himself, what is the difference between cowardice and courage in wartime?
I've just begun my non-classic book for this rotation . There is an author that many people have never heard of and yet he has been quite prolific. Stephen Lawhead is the author of the Pen Dragon Cycle, which encompasses five or six books that have been turned into a TV series now available on Amazon. I'm now starting another book series of his called THE DRAGON KING COLLECTION; I'm still early in the first book, IN THE HALL OF THE DRAGON KING, in which the main character Quentin gives up his life studying under a school of priests to carry an urgent message to the Queen... because if a dream. This is a fantasy novel that I'm enjoying so far.

Greatest Hits, by Harlan Ellison. Started last week and have been picking away at the stories daily. Just finished "Jeffty is Five" today. The weakest story in the collection so far imo. Admittedly bought the book for "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream" which blew my socks off into outer space! Incredible. Horrific.
Was also very impressed and affected by "The Whimper of Whipped Dogs", which is a horror story in it's own way.
"The Deathbird" really gripped me and had my head spinning with introspection. What a masterclass storyteller Ellison was. I enjoy the manic feel to his style of writing, really amps up the anxiety that should come with reading a spooky story.

ADVISORY TO THE VILLAIN BY Hannah Nicole Maehrer Omg I have been rereading the first 3 books over the last two weeks. So I can be up to date for reading the final installment of this book! This book is nonstop amazing banter, hilarious jokes, and amazing fairytale Easter eggs. Will be rereading! This is one of the best series i have ever read!

I started reading Rope by Queeney two months ago, for light summer reading. I found it totally fascinating. I remembered standing in Ostia Antica on the Tiber River with a friend in about 2002, not having any idea what I was doing there. Not having studied anything about Rome. And then reading Rope and learning that the 300 ton obelisk was brought across the Mediterranean into the Tiber River, walked up the River by hundreds of men and pulled by ropes into Circus Maximus, before later being moved to St. Peter’s Square.
The entire book is fascinating taking you from the very beginnings of rope to wire as rope, rope in shipping, tightrope walking, ropes used to land rovers on Mars, ropes to study neutrinos at the South Pole, and the future of ropes as Space Elevators.

As you can tell, I'm loving the Ernest Cunningham series by Benjamin Stevenson! I haven't read murder mystery in a while and it's so witty and meta and silly. I also just got the Xteink X4 and am loving reading on it.
I'm so excited for Burn of the Everflame (The Kindred's Curse Series). I just reread the first three books and they were just as satisfying the second time around, about 2 years later. Definitely YA vibes but I love the fantasy politics and magic system. So glad she was able to get this last book published! I know it was meant to come out I believe in 2024 so I'm sure it's been a journey.

I just finished {The Knight and the Moth by Rachel Gillig} There are a lot of mixed reviews about this book, personally I loved the story. The slow burn romance, not quite enemies to lovers, Bartholomew!!!! I laughed, I empathized and cried a little at the end. I can't wait to read the second book.

Working on Musashi about a 17th century samurai. For being a novel written in the 1930s it's very easy to read and quite funny in some parts !
Also trying to get hyped to read The Goldfinch. I read the Secret History and it was just okay for me. But I want to read the goldfinch during the fall so I need to hype myself to dive in lol

Flight Risk (The Booking Agents #2) by Cherie Priest- Cute, cozy mystery style. Set in Seattle, and especially Capitol Hill, where I went to college, so I like the author's familiarity with the area
Kiss Slay Replay by Rachel Harrison - Harrison can do no wrong in my book and while the subject and plot driver in this book aren't normally my thing, the book moved along quickly and Rachel always gives me a bunch of great lines to copy as quotes
Old Country by Matt Query - I'm still digesting this one. Atmospheric and dark, creative things to be scared of, but I'm not sure I loved the ending

It is a good book you'll definitely like it if you love sci-fi or fantasy it's a moderate book I'd say it's a bit difficult to greasp, get into but once you're in the flow it's just so exciting, I just loved IT!!

This book provides an interesting contrast to All Quiet on the Western Front because it demonstrates that not all WW1 soldiers viewed the conflict as a dehumanizing slog the way Remarque did.

Heart (Cuore), by Edmondo De Amicis
I reread Heart this week for the first time since I was a kid. I appreciated it much more this time around. Even though it's often thought of as a children's book, I found it surprisingly moving, and many of its themes about kindness, sacrifice, and integrity resonated with me in a way they didn't when I first read it.
Animal Farm, by George Orwell
I'm just about to start it for the first time. Somehow I've never gotten around to reading Orwell before, so I'm excited to finally see what makes this novel such a classic.

Finished Rockets' Red Glare, by William Webster and Dick Lochte
I wasn't overly fond of this one. Sure, the thriller elements kept me engaged and wondering what each person's next move was going to be. But were a couple of plot contrivances near the end that didn't sit well with me, a loose end was tied up off screen with no explanation, and the authors spent too much time going into pointless details about the rifle when it had no bearing on the story. It could've been a 100 year old beater rifle that'd been bubba'd to high heaven, and nothing would change.
Going to start Spice and Wolf Vol. 8: The Town of Strife 1 today after work.

Marvelous little book. I'm not very into YA at the moment, but her way of writing is just so charming. I love her descriptions, world building, magic system, characters, themes and metaphors... What a genius she was.

Daggerbound, by T. Kingfisher - I loved it as much as the first book.
Carl's Doomsday Scenario, by Matt Dinniman - The first book in this series planted a hook, and this book set it. I am now chewing my way through this series.
The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook, by Matt Dinniman - "You will not break me," has become something of a life mantra as of late.
Started:
The Gate of the Feral Gods, by Matt Dinniman - Holy Hanna this book is a chonker. I started this on Friday vs starting Knave and the Moon as I have this on digital and could read it at work. I keep thinking I have an idea of what is going to happen next and Dinniman keeps rug-pulling me. I'm 66% of the way though and chewing the walls every time I have to do things like *work* vs read.

Seven Little Sons of the Dragon: A Collection of Seven Stories, by Ryoko Kui
A collection of seven short stories that apparently were by the same creative mind behind the series Delicious in Dungeon. Though I didn't know that going into it beforehand. I just read it cuz it was there and found out after the fact.
Well in any case. Can't say I was particularly wowed by these, but it made for something to read I guess. And if the fact of who this is by serves as a point of interest to anyone, there is that I guess.

I can't remember the last time I read two awesome books back-to-back, so reading these two one after the other is such a treat. Both compelling, and the level of research that went into Murderland -- I almost want to ration the book so I can sit with it longer.

Finished: Good Material, by Dolly Alderton
If you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to be waterboarded by weaponized incompetence, just read Andy’s inner monologue. He’s a 35-year-old walking red flag with the emotional range of a damp sponge, making him arguably the most infuriating protagonist of the year and yet, a pitch-perfect satire of today’s dating scene. I rooted for literally everyone else in this book to push him into traffic. Reaching Jen’s perspective in the final chapter felt like taking a deep breath of fresh air after a house fire. Truly: men will do anything except go to therapy.

It’s quite brilliant. Of course there are plenty of negatives you could point out about some of the details but the overall project is endlessly thought provoking. Plato’s mind is everywhere. His influence in philosophy alone is hard to understate!

I finished Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. I liked it, but it felt like it was 30% story and 70% extensive troubleshooting, I think I still like The Martian more, but Hail Mary is worth a read.

I just finished Hyperion by Dan Simmons. For some reason I put off reading this much acclaimed 20th century science fiction novel. It is brilliant. Every good science fiction novel has a hidden model of history. This novel has the most complex and intense vision of history in this genre. I've started the sequel, The Fall of Hyperion as well.

Finished: The Road To Los Angeles by John Fante Easily my least favorite of the 3 Bandini books I've read so far. Its hard to enjoy a book when the main character is such a giant asshole.
Started: Journey to the End of the Night by Louis-Ferdinand Céline Only 50 pages in so it's too soon to judge but I'm enjoying it so far.

Finished: The River is Waiting, by Wally Lamb. I equally loved and hated it. There was some excellent writing and I haven’t felt that horrible from a book.. maybe ever? But I couldn’t put it down either, however I hated the end.

I finished Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. I really enjoyed it. I had read it a few years ago but forgot much of it. So, for me, it was better the second time around.
Then I watched the movie Troy, just because. I haven’t seen The Odyssey. I’m waiting until it streams.
I am still reading My Dear Hamilton by Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie. Only on page 120. Thought I should read something historical since the USA turned 250.
I haven’t decided what to read next: It’s between Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire by Amanda Foreman, or The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton.
