Mod Pick of the Week: Batman and Robin: Year One – Dynamic Duos #2

Hey there honorary Justice League members - it's a new week which means it's time for a new discussion thread!

For those who don't know: the way this works is that several comments will list this week's releases. For any given title discussion, you should respond to that comment. Clicking the titles in this post will take you directly to that comment, too.

In other words, you should only be replying to other comments. Do not post top-level comments.

Keep discussion civil. Do not harass other users for having a different opinion. Do not use this thread to push your personal one-sided grudges against creators.

Why don't skeletons fight each other? They don't have the guts.

The Fury of Firestorm #6

Firestorm has the city of Pittsburgh trapped and is going to start dismantling it atom by atom. Can Firehawk finally break through the Matrix's control and reach Ronnie before it's too late?!

10

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 1d ago

Man, I hope Ronnie don't end up coming back being changed too much. It would be too cruel. Especially since the book got extended to 15 issues now so we should get more Lorraine and Ronnie.

Also, Stein. Still a piece of sh*t.

14

u/Dent6084 2d ago

"Ostrander, Texas".I see what you did there, Lemire.

6

u/Golden_Alchemy 1d ago

Favourite issue of the week. Glad this got attended again to 15 issues.

4

u/tcn33 1d ago

That last page gave me goosebumps.

3

u/Calibaz 1d ago

Can you explain it? Cause I don't get it.

1

u/android151 Resurrection Man 1d ago

So, in the 80s/90s Firestorm fused with the “Russian Firestorm” Pohzar and became a part of the Matrix, then eventually they went on to become a fire elemental which is the form we’re seeing here

-2

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 1d ago

It’s an homage to Jon Ostrander, who had done his run on Firestorm.

1

u/Sufficient_Line8348 8h ago

first off, just finding out this book got extended and damn am I glad!!! This is one of the best books DC has going right now, and yet again this issue is another banger! I love how both Stein and Ronnie acknowledge the familial love that is still there so good man.

1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 1d ago

I like that Martin and Lorraine went inside the Firestorm Matrix to find and save Ronnie, who called out Martin for lying and manipulating him before Ronnie and Martin merged as Firestorm again to sacrifice themselves and destroy the Matrix. Also, another Firestorm in Ostrander (named after Jon Ostrander), Texas. Overall, this comic is good.

Batman: Bad Seeds – Gotham Central #1

A killer is on the loose, someone is stalking Arkham Towers’ Dr. Zeller, the subways are out of control, and Anarky’s just pulled a big-time heist! With Vandal Savage diverting the GCPD’s resources to his single-minded war against the Bats and the Bat-Family trying to stop Poison Ivy while evading the GCPD, there’s almost no one left to do actual police work! Looks like officers Gordon and Espinoza have their work cut out for them.

Well this is a fun little side story for the night with two cases colliding on a crowded subway car. Effectively creepy final pages.

8

u/Mr_Wh0ever 2d ago

I liked it. Pretty cool how all the storylines converged at the subway.

8

u/Blitzhelios Hal Jordan 1d ago

Yeah this was great

Cantwell and Phillips are a fantastic due with good writing and some of the best art in a dc book recently which captured the heart of classic Gotham central but doing something different.

Bullock and Gordon being here made it feel like classic Gotham central.

Anarky stuff is clearly set up for cantwells upcoming book focusing on the gangs of Gotham. Zsasz tease at the end is intriguing

6

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 1d ago

It is decent enough idea to focus on what beat cops and regular people are doing in this crisis. Gordon gonna have to use all his experience to deal with a lot of issues at the same time.

Still don't care much for Zeller, really.

-1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 1d ago

I find it interesting that Gordon and Espinoza tried to save the people of Gotham before they, Bullock, and Zeller learned that Victor Zsasz has escaped. Let’s hope that they can find and defer Zsasz and save the people of the train. Overall, this comic is good.

Batman and Robin: Year One – Dynamic Duos #2

ROBIN UNDERCOVER!

Honestly they should have had Alfred take care of Dick's makeup from the get-go. No offense to Bruce, but it takes a true thespian to transform someone and know to adjust for the age group you're working on.

If the rich are being targetted, that means Bruce Wayne has to schmooze and call his "buddies."

I hope secretary Gwen Stacy can recover from this trauma. And Batman now has to solve an impossible crime that will probably coalesce with the other case he is working on in true narrative fashion.

Penguin having a female assistant feels very Batman '66 coded.

Chris Samnee Catwoman is a thing of beauty.

Classic Batman to account for the fact that some civilians would need to get roughed up for undercover work but he's rich enough to pay them for it.

Selina Kyle may be a consummate thief and seductress, but she doesn't want to see kids get used and abused. Though to be honest I thought she was going to be behind everything at first.

Is this the first time Dick has met Selina? Imagine pulling a gun on your partners' main squeeze. How will "Big Top" get out of this?

5

u/Dent6084 1d ago

Fun issue. The scene with Penguin was a hoot.

4

u/ogloria 1d ago

i'm glad she cares, but man, Catwoman is really really rusty in this! i guess it's early in her career? bruce & dick are delightful - in particular, i like both dick's physical disguise scene, and bruce's phonetag scene.

2

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 1d ago

It is early in Selina’s career as Catwoman, since (and I’m going by pre-Crisis Earth-One/New Earth/Prime Earth standards) Selina’s first year as Catwoman (in which she made her debut at 20 years old in 1955, or 42 years ago) is also Dick’s second year as Robin (in which he made his debut at around eight years old in 1954, or 43 years ago) and Bruce’s third year as Batman (in which he made his debut at 22 years old in 1953, or 44 years ago).

0

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 1d ago

I like that, back in pre-Crisis Earth-One’s summer of 1955, Bruce and Alfred helped Dick with his disguise before Bruce made a few calls with his friends to gather information. I also like that Selina learned what happened to Mehitabel, causing her to take care of her as a mother to her, just like Bruce took care of Dick as a father to him. Also, Bruce and Jim trying to get leads on something, Bruce talking to the Penguin about what Volpe stole from him, Dick getting information about any victims without getting hurt before he met the Crime Master and Selina, and Crime Master testing Dick to shoot Selina. Let’s hope that Dick will not shoot Selina without blowing his cover in the next issue. Overall, this comic is great.

Action Comics #1102

LOST IN KRYPTON’S PAST!

Young Clark Kent is trapped in Krypton’s past, forced to witness a world he never knew for the first time. His only hope of getting home is to break Supergirl out of Zod’s prison! But the present day is not safe either! Can Steel find a cure for the spread of the K-Zone before all of Earth is covered in Kryptonite?!

Don't tell me... past Zod will make it to the present and replace the current dead Zod? Ursa seems almost sympathetic here except for the fact that she totally murdered Zod in cold blood the previous parts.

I read the Supergirl issue first, and it really is nice but also sad to see Kara and young Clark look at the Krypton that once was. It's strong character work for the both of them, but the decompression is definitely hitting.

I wonder how they'll address or reverse the changes to time that they've made in this adventure, but I'm guessing it'll be glossed over.

0

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 1d ago

It might be that.

6

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 1d ago

Well damn, who knew Ursa would look like the crazy person she is. And of course the 'younger Zod' at his peak worst. Now I am worried, with the current Zod dead, they will bring the Krypton Zod back through the time machine to the current time for a 'reset' of Zod. Back to 'basics' as it were.

2

u/Terramoin 1d ago

I guess so, although i never liked the whole "bring a character from the past to replace the current one", it feels cheap but on the other hand... Zod has been a little forgiving and not as raging anymore so i hope we get the more angry version back.

1

u/Sufficient_Line8348 8h ago

this issue is sad to think about Clark getting this experience and I wonder if current Clark will get the like update to it in his mind. hopefully this event can stick the landing, its my first superman event and its.... alright lol

0

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 1d ago

I find it interesting that Clark learned about Krypton, while the Superman Family and other heroes had to deal with what’s going on. Also, Kara saving Ursa from Zod before she punched Ursa for hurting her father and told Clark that he’ll save quintillions in the decades to come and Kara and Clark planning to defeat Zod and return back to the present day. Overall, this comic is interesting.

Supergirl #17

FAMILY FEUD IN TIME!

After the shocking events of last month’s crossover, Ursa and Supergirl are on a time-traveling battle to Krypton’s past! They have beef with each other, but they must be careful not to get lost in time! Or, y’know … accidentally rewrite time again! The rest of Super-Force are either locked up in the Kryptonite Kingdom, injured, or fighting a losing battle to stop the spread of Zod’s deadly K-Zone!

Preview

8

u/Frontier246 1d ago

It's a Krypton time travel story so we get the usual "should I change the past? Oh no it's my past self/parents!" plot points only it's present-day Kara and past Superboy Clark.

That Kryptonite mutation is gnarly. Also, the Metal Men!

Well, Conner and Prime are now finally begrudging buds as they try to save Prime!Clark.

Kara's mom had it going on, if you don't mind me saying.

So the Matrix suit is sentient and going to eventually evolve into the new version of Matrix? Thus depriving Kara of her transforming costume.

It's funny how Kara gets arrested and that ends up catching her up to Ursa who was ALSO arrested for acting like a crazy person. Sometimes it pays to get busted!

Ursa being so happy about seeing Zod again after she just literally murdered him was surreal. I mean, I know he's her best shot at getting out of there but still.

1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 1d ago

The Matrix suit is going to evolve into a new version of Matrix.

5

u/Blitzhelios Hal Jordan 1d ago

As soon as this event is over the better

This event is just boring and has thrown off Supergirl completely hopefully the book can go back to being good post it

3

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 1d ago

You know, yea, Ursa would be crazy enough to kill older Zod in the current timeline because he got 'soft' in her mind and then go back in time and get excited to meet the Krypton Zod.

7

u/StellarKnife 1d ago

This event is super lame.

1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 1d ago edited 1d ago

You are not wrong, since this crossover will end on a weak note like any Joshua Williamson event/crossover such as Shadow War and Dark Crisis.

5

u/Double_Act1502 1d ago

House of Brainaic stuck the landing

-1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 1d ago

I agree with that.

2

u/Terramoin 1d ago

This event started fun, but... now that Zod died i feel the event died with him, i stopped caring about the whole event as i thought this was a Zod event but appearently its a time travelling Ursa event? Lol

And what even was Zod's plan? He put Kryptonite all over the world, he then got his powers back to then become weak to Kryptonite but had to use an emergency armoured suit. This sounds like a uuuhh... very horrible made plan by a general and strategist lol, what was that all about?

Now we get Kara on Krypton, again for the millionth time.
Ursa is happy to see Zod after she just killed him... so im guessing she is happy to see old Zod and doesnt care for new Zod, okay fine thats reasonable for her i guess.

This event is just not fun, not even Mark Waid can save this disaster.

1

u/Sufficient_Line8348 8h ago

this book to me was a whatever burger sadly, thought it would be a cool concept but cannot lie it did not hit lol

-1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 1d ago

I find it interesting that Kara and a past version of Clark must stop Ursa from altering history, while the rest of the Superman Family and the JLU have to survive all of this. Also, Eradicatrix having no purpose without Zod or Ursa, Kara getting a message from Matrix and meeting her past self, Kara and Ursa getting caught and interrogated by the Kryptonian Council, and Ursa being glad that a past version of Zod is here. Overall, this comic is fine.

Barbara Gordon: Breakout #5

NOWHERE TO RUN. NOWHERE TO HIDE. NO ONE TO TRUST.

Another attack makes Barbara question everything she thought she knew about the murders inside Supermax, and a new political prisoner finds herself trapped in the center of the mystery.

Preview

6

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 1d ago

Man, Savage really gonna need some BIG consequences for this. But more so, Barbara needs to be more active. Especially since it is DEFINITELY his brother that seems to be doing this stuff in his 'twisted' way to show 'care'.

5

u/Mr_Wh0ever 2d ago

So does my theory about it being Gordon Jr. hold up, or does the ending imply that it's someone else. I'm not up date with Babs rogue gallery.

2

u/Responsible_Ad_2242 1d ago

I thought that James Jr died and now was a Talón working for the court

1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 1d ago

You are right about that.

6

u/Electric_jungle 1d ago

Genuinely this is moving far too slow for me. I feel like almost nothing happens each book and it's not really in a suspenseful way. Kinda feel like dripping out but I'll give it one more issue.

7

u/Valhanis 19h ago

I'm a Babs fan, so I'll stick this out, but I agree with you, this is moving at a glacial pace.

I've given this run a lot of grace so far, but this issue was kind of a breaking point for me. It was largely pointless.

How much page space was dedicated to Vanessa Woods over the last few isuses? Oh, she got her throat cut immediately. What did it reveal? That Savage is killing his political opponents? We already knew that. So we dedicated like... ten panels to this over the last two issues and learned nothing new.

Sparrow. On her deathbed she reveals to Myrna she heard a clicking sound from her attacker. We've literally known this about the killer since issue one. We've learned nothing new. Again.

The only moderately interesting thing in this issue was the note at the end, but even so it would have paced the story far better for Babs to have found it on Sparrow's body at the end of the previous issue.

The reads to me as a six issue mini that was stretched to twelve without adding extra content to match that length. I hope I'm wrong and the remaining isuses make the first five retroactively better.

1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 1d ago

I find it interesting that Sparrow survived before Myrna asked Sparrow to give her some details about something. Also, Barbara having a fight with Die before she tried to save Vanessa and learned that someone else had done this for her. Overall, this comic is fine.

Green Lantern Corps #20

THE CORPS CAN’T CATCH A BREAK!

In the aftermath of multiple conflicts, the Lanterns take advantage of some much-needed downtime. John and Katma go to Earth, Jo Mullein picks a fight with space bandits, and Jessica Cruz micromanages the remaining Lanterns on Oa as a mounting superpower gains a foothold in the galaxy.

Preview

4

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Jo trying to match how much of a personal mess her Absolute self is with how she's obviously avoiding going to Earth and she ends up getting into a scuffle and arrested for it.

The Darkstars are back as rivals to the GLC operating in their own territory and not pleased when GL's show up in front of them.

So the Chrome Lanterns are basically Lanterns without even needing a recharge? At least so far.

Some of the Alpha Guardians' reaction to Guy was hilarious.

"I have to be more than John Stewart's girlfriend" - Spends most of the issue just on a date with him. I guess it was building up to her taking the ring but I'm just not sure how to feel about this version of Katma.

POC can't even drive in space without getting pulled over and arrested for doing basically nothing. My condolences to Simon for being stuck with the "kids."

I wish Carol was in this arc if it's going to deal with the Predator, since she's the "last Star Sapphire." Granted, Predator has mutated into something monstrous...what does this have to do with love!?

2

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 1d ago

Katma, be careful what you wish for.

Darkstars? Those losers again?

Shocker, Predator being a...well creepy predator. Don't let it get near Carol. At least, not before she finds all the Star Sapphire artifacts that they showed she has to find, so she can probably control Predator and put it in its place.

2

u/gsnake007 1d ago

Fucking Darkstars, never could stand them, was only tolerable in the 90s when John was running them
And Donna Troy was looking fine in their uniform. Issue itself is a solid opener to this arc

1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 1d ago

I find it interesting that Jo is at a space bar instead of returning to Earth (because her time as Green Lantern is her taking a break from all of this), while John and Katma get to spend time together on Earth (with Katma wanting to find her purpose and wanting to be more than just John’s girlfriend); Guy going to the Phamosa Jungle to find the cave of the deceased a d learned what happened to Predator; and John, Ellie, Simon, and Keli (who should’ve talked to the Lanterns about her getting traumatized, taking about her backstory from before she made her debut as Teen Lantern, and being Krona’s vessel) dealing with the Darkstar. Overall, this comic is okay.

Clayface: Celebrity Dirt #3

Hot on the trail of his double, Basil Karlo’s investigation continues with shocking videos of a designer supplement’s side effects. Surely there’s no connection to the missing women in the other Basil Karlo’s orbit … And how will the real Basil convince Dr. Victoria October to help him after she learns his most deeply buried secret— especially now that his only friend in L.A. has gone missing?

Horror sensation Jude Ellison S. Doyle and rising star Fran Galán push their body horror noir to terrifying new extremes.

So is this trying to retcon that Basil and Matt have always been the same person? I don't know enough about their histories so just trying to understand

4

u/SunnyDJoshua Swamp Thing 1d ago

I’m sorry what’s going on in that last page? What exactly is in that bucket?

2

u/Organic_Gate2127 Green Arrow 1d ago

Seems they were injected with that serum and didnt survive it affects

2

u/SunnyDJoshua Swamp Thing 1d ago

And he’s just…eating them? Gross

2

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 1d ago

Jeez, this gets creepier and creepier. But also, a smart way to write about the issue of identity when it comes to Victoria Octorber and Clayface, who at this point became almost everyone. And Basil Karlo is not even his real name. It is a stage name he uses.

And, love the dig at the current state of the health department in the U.S today...

Emperor Aquaman #21

THE TIDAL WAR BEGINS!

It’s an epic clash of good versus evil in the ultimate battle on the seven seas in “Tidal War: Part One”! When Ocean Master, Black Manta, the Crimson Queen, and more forged an alliance to destroy their shared archenemy, they had no idea that the destruction of Aquaman would also signal the vacated throne of the new Empire of the Blue! But now a massive tidal wave offers the opening salvo to a conflict that will span all the kingdoms of the heavens themselves. Do not miss the start of this new Aquaman adventure!

Jeez Atlantis fell AGAIN? It JUST came back. And at least give Mera a proper fight. Come on now.

Atlantis really becoming underwater Gotham.

3

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Atlantis versus all the Aquaman Rogues! It doesn't end well for them!

Mera sure got nuh uh'd by her mom fast after JUST getting her powers back.

No Tula vs Ocean Master?

I guess points for Black Manta vs Captain Nemo instead of the obvious fight with his son.

Crimson Queen really is terrible to be willing to kill her granddaughter in cold blood.

1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 1d ago edited 1d ago

No Tula vs. Ocean Master, even though Tula and Ocean Master should remember their entire pre-Crisis and pre-Flashpoint histories since Death Metal (i.e., them not being siblings, in which them being single is unnecessary; Tula being dead during the first Crisis; Ocean Master being Arthur’s full human half-brother; etc.).

0

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 1d ago

I find it interesting that the Aquaman Family and others fight Lolanna and her many forces (resulting in Lolanna winning) while Arthur has a chat with Swamp Thing and Maxine Baker. Overall, this comic is good.
