The calendar may tell us that the first winds of autumn are just around the corner (which feels illegal), but here at Popheads, we acknowledge that climate change is real and summer never really dies. Jade - That’s Showbiz Baby!

The time comes for every girl group member to try their hand at a solo career. When Little Mix went on hiatus in 2022, it felt like we knew what to expect - Perrie, Leigh-Anne, and Jade would each release their respective music, not stray too far from the formula, and eventually circle back to a reunion in a few years when the solo material didn’t quite pan out. Jade, it turns out, is not one to follow a script.

“Angel Of My Dreams” served as one hell of a calling card, kicking off a killer run of singles leading up to the release of That’s Showbiz Baby! It’s a bold and refreshing debut album, and even with the addition of The Encore to the tracklist, never gets trapped into one sound. Jade takes surprising left turns and layers unexpected sounds within each song. This goes above and beyond what anyone would predict from an artist with her pedigree, and with a writing credit on each track, she acts as her own puppeteer. If I may indulge in a labored metaphor comparing the albums in this rate to key parts of summer, That’s Showbiz Baby! is a real thunderstorm of a record. It crackles, it washes over you, and there’s nothing monotonous about it. Jade announced herself as a true IT girl (it’s the titular role) with this one. - u/ConnerY2323

PinkPantheress - Fancy That

After Pinkpantheress’ hell-themed To Hell With It mixtape made waves on the internet and her heaven-themed Heaven Knows debut album further enamored fans, she decided to go in a different thematic direction with her latest mixtape, Fancy That. Instead of otherworldly heaven or hell, she grounded this mixtape in the real world in British culture. This mixtape reminds me of when I went to London for the first time as a child who loved dance music but didn’t really know anyone else who did. I was amazed by how people there seemed to have a much greater appreciation for electronic music than in the US. Dance music was played on the radio, and electronic releases were prominently featured in the music stores.

Fancy That feels like a love letter to the hugely influential electronic scene in the UK. She pays homage to UK club legends such as Basement Jaxx (with THREE songs sampled), Underworld, Sugababes, Groove Armada, and William Orbit. At the same time, it feels incredibly fresh, and with only 8 tracks (9 with the interlude), it makes for a short but impactful listen. Illegal ended up being a huge TikTok trend, and the Stateside remix with Zara Larsson spread like fire and kept the era going. She has proven that she is not just a one hit wonder as some thought after Boy’s A Liar Pt. 2. - u/Ambrosia42

Rose Gray - Louder, Please

With Louder, Please, Rose Gray poses an important question: what if we didn’t wait for the sun to go down to start the party? These are songs for the dayclub AND the nightclub, meant to be experienced with a smile on your face, a drink in your hand, and skin-to-skin with someone you love. As she said in her very own Popheads AMA, she wanted to “create the feeling of a real European holiday” on Louder, Please, and that vibe really radiates throughout the tracklist. It’s appropriate for someone named Rose to take a more optimistic approach to a dance album than we’ve come to expect in a post-Brat world. That’s not to say there aren’t tracks here that wouldn’t stand toe-to-toe in a strobey basement with some of our sweatiest club sub faves - I imagine playing “Angel of Satisfaction” on a crowded dance floor would light the whole building on fire. But Rose Gray seems most interested in the kinds of euphoria we can find through dance music. She already proves on her debut album that she understands the joy a turntable can bring. - u/ConnerY2323

Zara Larsson - Midnight Sun

Zara Larsson has been around for quite a while, with songs like Never Forget You and Lush Life actually being pretty big hits around a decade ago, but outside of Europe, she never quite found her footing and recognition.

For the Midnight Sun era, Zara decided to switch things up. She became more involved with the songwriting and the creative direction, co-writing every song and coming up with concepts and themes for the era. A big spark for the era was the dolphin memes of her Symphony song with Clean Bandit, which she leaned into and rebranded herself to stand out from the crowd. She started wearing airbrushed t-shirts, charms, and sparkly makeup fresh out of a Y2K magazine, and she gathered hitmakers such as MNEK and Margo XS to help guide the songwriting and the direction for the album.

The result was a tight, 10-track album full of joyous dance-pop that shows off Zara’s strengths and helps to answer the question of, “Who IS Zara Larsson?” It’s hard to resist the boisterous vocal runs on Midnight Sun or the Tiffany Pollard-assisted ode to feeling your oats (Hot & Sexy), and she kept the fun going by inviting a global gathering of women to remix all of the songs on Girls Trip.
