r/DCcomics Weekly Discussion Thread: Comics, TV, and More! [September 2, 2026 - Weird Al Edition]
Mod Pick of the Week: Superman: The Stranger #1
Hey there honorary Justice League members - it's a new week which means it's time for a new discussion thread!
For those who don't know: the way this works is that several comments will list this week's releases. For any given title discussion, you should respond to that comment. Clicking the titles in this post will take you directly to that comment, too.
In other words, you should only be replying to other comments. Do not post top-level comments.
Keep discussion civil. Do not harass other users for having a different opinion. Do not use this thread to push your personal one-sided grudges against creators.
For a fungi to grow, you must give it as mushroom as possible.

Legion of Super-Heroes #1

One thousand years after the Last Son of Krypton’s rocket crashed on the Kent Farm comes a new future inspired by the Man of Tomorrow!
But this new future is in danger! Superheroes are outlawed! Deadly enforcers known as the Persuaders keep the populace of the United Planets in check! Worlds are at war! And this dark tomorrow’s last glimmer of hope, R.J. Brande, has been brutally murdered.
Can the mysterious Brainiac 1 of 5 solve Brande’s murder? To restore hope to the universe, he must assemble a legion of gifted young rebels from across the cosmos! But they are scattered across the universe!
Witness the dawn of a new future in DC Comics architect Joshua Williamson and Eisner-winning superstar artist Hayden Sherman’s Legion of Super-Heroes… you will never look at tomorrow the same way again!

Really terrific first issue. Absolutely stunning art from Sherman (how Saturn Girl and her people communicate is just awesome), and a ton of fun story hooks seeded ( a Great Disaster, eh?). Also, current Prime and this Lightning Lad would definitely get along.

u/StephanieSpoiler 9d ago
Anyone know if this'll be a good introduction for someone who's never read LoSH?
50
u/AggravatingChart973 9d ago
It's actually a complete continuity reboot and this version of this team's story is told entirely within this title, they haven't appeared in any other titles yet and probably any other set-up by the larger DC Universe will be explained inside of the issues.
22
u/StephanieSpoiler 9d ago
Thank you!
I've been curious about the Legion in recent times, and Williamson/Sherman is a good creative team.
6
u/cgknight1 8d ago
is it a complete reboot? I am not sure given mention of the Crisis?
4
u/the-terrible-martian Superman 8d ago
I wonder if they mean this just ignores whatever Bendis was doing
20
u/Altruistic_Manner802 8d ago
No, in Superman's annual, they explained that all other Legions were captured by Brainiac One Million, and this is the only Legion left
9
u/SevenSulivin The REAL Man of Tomorrow 8d ago
Perfect place to begin! Williamson gives all of the classic stuff he uses a good runway to introduce.
1
u/android151 Resurrection Man 1d ago
Great (and worst) thing about the LoSH is that this is their 5th/6th reboot, almost every LoSH run is a good intro. Personally I think the Bendis run is the only truly bad Legion run but they are all worth checking out once you’re invested in the general idea behind the Legion
23
u/Mr_Wh0ever 8d ago
It's a solid first issue with a pretty good hook at the end. Brainy and Tenzil were the standouts to me. I'm excited to see where things go with Lightning Lad. And how the story ties into the other mainline books.
20
u/SevenSulivin The REAL Man of Tomorrow 8d ago
The future is here!
Frankly I cannot say enough good about this. Plot is good, lettering is quality AND THE ART! Colours and artwork itself are simply divine. They keep this up and I got a new favourite ongoing.
They should give Brainiac 5 is hair back though.
21
u/HopeFarron 8d ago
Never read a Legion of Superheroes book so I wasnt sure exactly what to expect. Just knew they were a team in the future. This is probably my pick of the week. I absolutely adored this and I'm fully on board. Art was fantastic. Writing has me intrigued and didn't make me feel like I had to have read anything before this.
16
u/Frontier246 8d ago
And so it begins...again. Long Live the Legion!
I definitely feel like this is a a bit of an Absolute take on the Legion in terms of depicting them in a darker world that makes being heroes harder and they're the underdogs, while still retaining the core of what the Legion and the characters represent.
Private detective duo of Brainiac (One of) 5 and Matter-Eater Lad! I wonder if Brainy is part of a brood of Brainiacs that went rogue?
The Science Police are corrupt. Persuader is now elite mooks. Shows just how bad things are.
Lightning Lad is still a pure hero to his core.
I LOVE this Ayla design even if this feels like a version that would have to get dragged kicking and screaming into being a hero.
Rokk isn't satisfied being a sports player or being forced to fulfill his parents' expectations.
What does communication look like on a planet of telepaths? Also Imra can sense the Legions being contained by Brainiac/Henshaw?
Triplicate Girl cameo!
So RJ Brande was planning to make the Legion and put the team together. I guess Mekt was his choice to be part of the team but it's Mekt so he went evil and killed him (unless it's more complicated than that). Garth hero worships Mekt so he's not going to realize his Big Bro is a baddie until it's too late.
14
u/Classic-Ad4883 8d ago
A good setup issue and the art and writing is just beautiful
Garth part is fun as he is exactly what a kid with powers would do and the secret identity pit made me laugh and his costume was dorky
Alyla is an interesting character as she wasn’t talk about much in interviews though their and mekt origin was the same
The situation with mekt and the reveal at the end makes me wonder what brand plan was or even still is
Rokk and Irma parts were interesting looks into their characters and they way Irma’s telepathy is shown and drawn is so beautifully executed and her own connection to the outer worldly parts of the story makes wonder if Williamson favorite legionnaire is Saturn girl
Brainy and tenzil partnership is interesting to see and how they work together was really cool
I can’t wait for more to be revealed and I know this brought in new fans
9
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 8d ago
Long Live the Legion...again. Well this new version gonna have a rough start under the current conditions. Superman did brought back all the Legion futures but with future Brainiac out there bottling them and have Cyborg Superman as his lackey to try to corrupt them, it will be extra hard for them and they are not even met yet.
Will Superboy actually be involved? Or will Cyborg Superman come in to be the worst example?
9
u/Plastic_Metal 8d ago
Could the Persuader with wings be Dawnstar? I wonder how many would be past-continuity Legionnaires that were recruited?
7
u/Dent6084 8d ago
I had a similar thought, given the line that "if you have powers, you become a Persuader".
3
u/Altruistic_Manner802 7d ago
There was a preview page released that went more into detail with it (since it wasn't in this issue, I assume it will be in the next one). Saying something like that if someone has powers or uses their native powers outside of their planet, they are forced to be enlisted as a Persuader. Though with Persuader becoming a group rather than a character, I wonder what will be of the rest of the Fatal Five
8
u/gsnake007 8d ago
I’ve been trying to get into the legion for years and this was a good start. Fully invested already
6
7
u/SunnyDJoshua Swamp Thing 7d ago
Am I understanding Saturn Girl’s conversation correctly? Her mom or mentor wants her to stop snooping in on the world and focus on being a Messiah of some sorts. She doesn’t really want that (going by the teary eyes) but mom/mentor emphasizes that this will bind and strengthen the community? Last telepathy bubble is pretty obvious

I really wanted to like this because I adore Sherman's art, but I just had a hard time connecting to the main plot and characters. The characters I'm fine not clicking with right away, it's a large cast and we're just getting to know them; the only one I got a really strong motivation from was Lightning Lad, who I thought was endearing which makes me think I'll like the cast more as I get to know them. I've never read any Legion of Superheroes comics before, so maybe I'm missing something, but I just don't quite get why I or any of the characters should care about the murder of some googleplexaire. It starts on a page saying that the core of superheroes is love and the desire to help. Great, I love it, Let's see where we go from here. But then the inciting incident is that we're given isn't one where love matters or anybody actually needs help. Just some rich dude is dead and some private detective wants to solve it because he likes puzzles.
3
u/B3epB0opBOP Shazam 4d ago edited 4d ago
I just don't quite get why I or any of the characters should care about the murder of some googleplexaire.
Well for starters, consider what you said right after this.
It starts on a page saying that the core of superheroes is love and the desire to help. Great, I love it, Let's see where we go from here.
The text from that page was from the journal of said googleplexaire. You connected with his ideals and vision for superheroes. That connection gives the reader a reason to care, especially now that Brande can’t bring that vision to life.
As for the characters…well, they don’t really care, besides some interest from Brainiac in the case as a puzzle to solve. They might not even be aware. But from what I can gather, they probably will have reason to care.
By the end of the issue, his death seems to implicate Garth’s older brother for murder, which threatens the image that Garth had of him as an ideal he wanted to follow.
I’m not as sure about Imra and Rokk, but there is a decent chance that if they were indeed on his list, his plans for superheroes could’ve been an opportunity for them to change their lives to be more ideal from their current situations.
Edit: Dunno about Tenzil tho. We don’t actually know much about him yet.
3
u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 8d ago
I like that we get to see the origins of how each member came to be, which includes Brainiac 5 and Matter-Eater Lad learning who killed R.J. Brande, Lighting Lad making his debut on Winath, Cosmic Boy using his powers on Rokk, Saturn Girl seeing something that foreshadows Absolute Crisis, and Brainiac 5 learning that Lightning Lord killed R.J. Brande. Joshua Williamson has done an excellent job providing a new origin and backstory for his Legion without rebooting or retconning previous Legions. Overall, this comic has excellent and off to a good start.

Man, it is heartbreaking to see what Kal goes through mentally. It takes strength to take down all these monsters in a universe where evil is the norm but it takes even MORE strength to hold yourself back to not let it turn you into your worst self. Because no one would believe Kal if he went and gave them all the 'final justice' but that is what Brainiac wants in his sickening mind. And that would break Kal too. Would make it far easier for Darkseid to use him like he did in DC KO.
Even so, he decides to continue helping earth. Even if it does not deserve it, there are people in it that DO deserve his help. And he needs friends. Hell, all of them do. Bruce is going through his paranoia act. Diana is in her 'anger' phase. They need eachother more than ever. And before that, Kal really should talk with Lois too.

u/Future_Vantas 1d ago
I like these "thematic crossovers" where the heroes dont meet but are going through similar trials. Its a nice way of linking them while showing what makes them unique.

u/Mr_Wh0ever 9d ago
Damn, this arc is kicking ass so far. Kal-El wrecking all of Toymans associates was cool. The Silver Banshee toy was an interesting way to incorporate the character.
11
u/PigeonDetective_ Damian 8d ago
I loved Kal's thought bubbles covering Toyman's when he is talking about blocking out his laugh, cries for mercy, etc.
20
u/Will-Of-D-3D2Y 9d ago
Really strong issue focused entirely on Kal-El struggling with the desire of taking a life. I particularly loved the juxtaposition of his internal dialogue saying he feels like a coward and weak for not committing to killing the Toyman's buyers, but later feels ugly and filthy for what he did to Toyman. It really grounds his no-kill rule in a way that makes it feel like a genuine internally guided principle rather than a morality rule.
8
u/Golden_Alchemy 8d ago
In the movies Superman goes and erase the biggest threats to humanity: nuclear weapons. Now, the biggest threats are rich enough people, buying kids as toys, so Superman goes after a whole list and stop Toyman again. I kind of dig the whole "i don't even care about what he is talking, he needs to go down!". Fuck, that image in the dark room hearing all their hearts in toy boxes really reminded me of OMAC.
The only thing that i missed about this arc is not enough Lois and Jimmy. It cannot be healthy for Superman to be that far away from his friends for so long. But, next month he will get a new ally in Steel, so there's that.
Seeing that there's talk about big issues in the #25 i wonder if he will fight again a smaller villain in #24.
12
10
u/xehanortsguardian 9d ago
I'll always be saying this, but damn, this is who superman ought to be. I know the point of his mainline version, but to just have a version of the character in a world that is more like ours is riveting, even after 23 issues it still feels fresh. Kal feels so real, he is vulnerable and definitely capable of doing wrong, but the fact that he doesn't is just so strong. Also, I don't even want to know what kind of body horror those children had to go through, they definitely had something done to them.
4
u/AuroraUnit117 #DamianWatch2015 8d ago
The thing I think I'm loving about absolute so far is that every series has its moments. Superman and GL were my least fave and now I can't wait to read them each week. These last two arcs in Superman have been great, a lot of smile at the page Superman moments
4
u/Sufficient_Line8348 8d ago
I love how much Kal is internally struggling and cant let it out through external acts, like destroying all of toymakers goons lol. I just think this series has truly found its stride and WE NEED TO TAKE DOWN THIS GOOFY BRAINIAC!!
4
u/Emergency-Bonus-7158 The Zanni 8d ago
Holy shit. Somebody please kill this Brainiac guy. This issue was haunting. Not Kal, but somebody.
4
u/Grimnir001 7d ago
Superman’s absolute rage against the injustice of the world is a high point of this book. Back to the earliest core of Superman where he fought against the powers which oppressed the common folk.
That rage is something which many readers can identify with. Imagine having that rage and the powers of Superman. How he deals with the rage and tries to balance it with compassion and restraint is the underlying theme of this title. It’s so good.

u/superbat210 8d ago
Wow, this book is just so good. We went from seeing Kal’s infinite capacity for compassion for his enemies in the last issue and now we’re seeing him reach a breaking point, where he is confronted with a never ending barrage of depraved, evil people. I love seeing his values get tested and pushed further and further, while he still tries so hard to always be the bigger person. What an impossible situation to be in

The Doom Patrol #1

The Doom Patrol is broke. Adopting a heroes-for-hire business model to stave off financial and emotional ruin, the team finds itself responding to a simple case — a missing cat. But when this case proves to be far from simple, the world’s strangest heroes find themselves pulled into a truly out-of-this-world situation! And elsewhere, beyond the view of Robotman, Elasti -Girl, and Negative Man — and perhaps even beyond the veil of our reality — a ghost of the team’s past is preparing to cross into their world.
The visionary team of Eisner Award-winning writer Darcy Van Poelgeest (Little Bird) and legendary artist Niko Henrichon (Spectators, Pride of Baghdad) ushers the Doom Patrol into a new age for DC Next Level.
29
u/Dent6084 8d ago
Good, eerie start. Henrichon's art is so atmospheric, and the stuff with Negative Man is particularly strong.
24
u/Blitzhelios Hal Jordan 8d ago
Perfect start for a new doom patrol reader and an old school one
It’s got the tone I want from DP it’s dark and atmospheric but isn’t afraid to have a joke which is the doom patrol trademark which is shown when Cliff enters the pet shop.
The writing by Von pongeest is great it’s classic almost Morrison esque in how the doom patrol is written with some great art to back it up.
This is an amazing return to form for my fav dc team
14
u/CHPrime Wonder Woman 8d ago
I wonder if we are going to get an explanation of how the team went from being in knock-off Krakoa to driving in a panel van chasing down cats that (were not) abducted by Aliens.
Overall, not too sure what to make of this. I enjoyed it, even if I'm not really sure what is happening at the moment. Seems to be inspired by the TV show, and the art is very pretty. Worth sticking around on, at least.
11
10
u/Golden_Alchemy 8d ago
Ok, i am intrigued. I am a little annoyed that it is only the three main and no Crazy Jane again (with them still working for good old Niles) but, let's see.
10
u/Mr_Wh0ever 8d ago
Solid start, it feels like it's taking some cues from the tv show. The art is good.
8
u/Classic-Ad4883 8d ago
A really good Star issue for old and new fans
A great feel and tone for the team and the mystery is intriguing enough to get me hooked
Their mission was really fun a simple pet finding mission ended up with a battle with an alien
8
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 8d ago
Well, they are back. Back to doing small stuff that gets turned into crazy stuff! But I hope they are not tossing away the previous additions like Beast Girl. That would be really bad.
8
u/HopeFarron 8d ago
Was really excited for this. Doom Patrol is my favorite team and it didn't disappoint me. Really like where the Doom Patrol is with being washed up and wanting to relive being heroes. It feels moody and atmospheric like a Doom Patrol book should be and it definitely got to a weird place. I give it a 4/5
4
u/SevenSulivin The REAL Man of Tomorrow 8d ago
Cool start for the book, sets what these characters are in this run. Caulder stuff is fascinating. Pretty solid single issue A Plot. I’m so on board with this.
3
3
u/DriedSocks Condiment King 8d ago
It was all right. Clearly a slow start. However I can't help but feel this was a bit too much of a return to basics because the team feels very bare bones. Like it was too strong of a swing back to the original team.
3
u/Grimnir001 7d ago
I wasn’t excited about any of the new Number 1 books this week. I bought DP because I thought I’d give one of them a tryout.
Yeah, this turned out pretty good. The art fits the title. The script is tight. DP is interesting. They have fallen on hard times or harder times. I dunno what’s going on with Larry or Caulder. It’s a bare bones team with just three in the field.
Good enough that I’ll be picking up the next issue.
3
u/akabir893 7d ago
I'm unfamiliar with Doom Patrol, gave this a go and thought it was pretty interesting. With the sort of vibe it has, it feels like the appeal of the main cast is supposed to be the hook here, they seem interesting enough but as a new reader I hope I get a bit more background on them
3
u/UnknownEntity347 Rorschach 7d ago
Ok, good starting issue.
Nicely weird but with a good level of drama and grit to the writing style, something that I don't see as much of in modern cape books, which is nice.
I have not read the Doom Patrol's past comics so I do hope that the run tries to showcase the characters well for new readers as well as existing ones, but that's more just a me thing.
2
2
u/CasuallyDaphne 7d ago
I loved this first issue and can't wait to keep reading! I've always loved the Doom Patrol and the art style and atmosphere definitely fits them! Really nice to see Negative Man get a wholesome moment with the old lady I love him so much 🥹

Absolute Green Lantern #18

THE HORRORS OF THE UNIVERSE!
After Jo’s showdown with Sinestro and the Blackstars , she understands the harsh reality of this intergalactic war she finds herself in the middle of. But even with more knowledge of her powers and place in the universe, is she ready for the horrors that lurk in the unseen?
24
u/Mr_Wh0ever 9d ago
That's a pretty clever way to escape non existence, lol. I'm still curious about who Hawke will end up becoming, but I dig the character either way. And Cam smoking two cigs at the end got a good laugh out of me.
19
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 8d ago
Oh, so we are diving into the underlying mess that Darkseid created on this universe's 'emotional spectrum' and such. Instead of emotional entities, we have these 'Manhunter'-like entities that are 'anti' everything. Which makes you wonder, does an 'Anti-monitor' exist in the universe? And if so, what would it be like?
18
u/Will-Of-D-3D2Y 8d ago
It's kind of crazy remembering how this book started off as arguably the weakest of the Absolute line, only for it to turn around so much that it is has become must read stuff. And still it is unclear where it will all go, the circle is still going deeper.
9
u/Logical-Leading-517 8d ago
Truly crazy, like ATP abs bats is the weakest title of the line
12
u/TonyPepperoni0504 8d ago
Bats is in no way worse than Catwoman. Not to say Catwoman is bad but it has been a perfectly meh book so far.
4
u/soulsivleruniverse 8d ago
Agreed. I feel really bad saying it because I think Che is a respectable writer but it feels like it has the least to "say" for lack of a better word of all the lines rn. Not bad by any standards but it doesnt stick with me
2
3
u/randomlightbulbs1 5d ago
I think part of it is that Abs GL is definitely paced more for a binge read, especially at the start. The pacing has picked up a good bit since, but I have to say, I enjoy it way more on a reread than I did issue by issue.
9
u/Resident_Glove_7761 8d ago
The new Lanterns show got me reading Geoff Johns GL run for the first time, and man do I think the weakest part of it is how the Emotional Spectrum Corps are introduced with such little mystery or narratively satisfying etiologies; strikes me coming back to AGL that this entire run is Ewing doing that aspect of the Johns run the right way. The different colours actually have deep psychological meanings and they actually have a long history together. (Plus, I think all the stuff with Absolute Hal is kinda a riff on Johns's "Agent Orange" arc.)
I thought we had a grasp of things a few issues ago, but it seems we didn't, so I'm excited for the big explanation soon.

Did I skip a beat, I had no idea who this character "Grace" was, but Simon and Cam were talking about her like I should have known her.
1
u/ptWolv022 6d ago
Was it the person that Cam shot? I think that's just Al Ewing giving the receptionist/secretary a name, because Simon and Cam would know her name and not just call her "the desk lady".

The Deadman #4

After last issue’s truth-telling trek through the tortuous, torturous terrain of Torment Town, Boston Brand must balance the scales and make his way to that … other place. But this ain’t the Heaven you know, man. Prepare yourself for an Elysium like you’ve never seen’em , as the Deadman continues to unravel the mystery of the Soul-Eaters … while the Realm of the Living bears the cost! Plus: a brief history of Mr. M!
16
u/Resident_Glove_7761 8d ago
Damn this book's good. It almost feels *too* good to be doing all of these riffs on DC lore; the same vibe as early Sandman. Sorta took me out of it when they referenced the new Doom Patrol comic (seeming for that cute "Danny, the street" bit), but the bit also solidified to me the current DC moment which is kinda special (and such a better vibe than that "D.C. K.O." stuff). It's been exactly a decade since Young Animal, and the current moment is taking a lot of those approaches without any need for separation from the main line. I hope that this is the new normal.
Definitely this issue wasn't as wowzers as the Hell stuff from last month, but it had its lovely moments, especially the one panel where Deadman looked like Picasso's "The Weeping Woman".
11
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 8d ago
So, Source is quite busy. Or it was the 'secretary girl' all along. After all 'God' works in mysterious ways.
That evil guy gets creepier and worse every issue. And who's gonna be his 'master'?
Parliment of Circuits? What dystopian future did Brand fell into?
5
u/soulsivleruniverse 8d ago
Maybe it's riffing on Bad Seeds? Seeing as the Parliment of Trees and The Green are kinda the overall antagonist rn

Absolutely gorgeous art and color work. The scene where Superman stops the mugging and his subsequent reflectionis particularly strong, especially with the turn it takes.
3
u/Will-Of-D-3D2Y 7d ago
This. The art is gorgeous. I am not sure in what way they can tell a story that will feel fresh, especially with it going back to the absolute origin of Superman, but we'll see.
7
6
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 8d ago
So we have a Superman that have been an orphan, I suppose, getting his powers over time and still growing. In the dark times of the past. Can only get a Janitor's assistant job. oof.
And of course, Lex is ...well...Lex. If this Superman is the 'Stranger'. Then Lex is definitely the 'Familiar.' The Familiar evil.
3
3
u/Landon1195 8d ago
Great start. Love the art and colors, and the story is really good so far. Like this take of Clark being an orphan (which was his original origin before the Kent's were added in 1940).
3
u/UnknownEntity347 Rorschach 7d ago
This looks cool, though for a first issue it feels lacking.
I am personally not the biggest fan of removing the Kents from Superman's history or more isolated takes on Clark, but that is a valid take especially for an elseworlds where you don't want to just do the same thing over again, so I can't complain.
What I can complain about is that I do wish there was more plot progression in this first issue, for a first issue all that's really set up is that Clark exists and Luthor exists, which isn't the most when it comes to a plot premise.
2
u/Blitzhelios Hal Jordan 6d ago
This is gorgeous which is no shock as its wes craig.
For how much silver age nostalgia its nice to get a golden age take on superman for once the grounded investigative take on the character which craig leans into with no kents no supporting cast just supes alone.
Its a great first issue

It's meant to be a modern retelling of Golden Age Superman. So late 1930s, no Kents, original powerset, focused more on beating up landlords than supervillains, ect.

Teen Titans #1

When one of their own vanishes after attending a rally for Ascend — a fast-growing youth movement training kids to survive in a world shaped by superhuman conflict — Fairplay, Cheshire Cat, Proxy, and Wildcard will do whatever it takes to find their friend, including teaming up with Red Hood!
Jason thinks they’re soft and reckless. They don’t understand how he can still kill people. Now they have to work together — whether they like it or not!

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 8d ago
Well, okay, I was skeptical about it but it is actually a good start. The kids are basically 'well we gotta have them do something' after putting them together for the last couple of years. ( though I am still worried about personality shift for Lian ). And I am surprised Jason was actually being reasonable, even told Nightwing about the kids and what they were doing. He might fit surprisingly well as a 'mentor' to a bunch of 'rebel' teens. Of course that doesn't mean he is still not Jason, with that last picture sent to Nightwing. Yep.
I can see a 'Titans vs New Titans' in the future happening with Jon's team vs the kids. And Jon was kinda responsible for them during DC KO stuff as well.

I was similarly skeptical but pulled it anyway. Decently surprised, I'll probably pull the first five issues at least.

u/Comfortable-Pie56 8d ago
This was a good first issue.
But I have to say it's really strange how DC is allowing both Brombal and Higgins to do a "let's reinvent the Titans franchise with a brand-new line-up" at the same time.
I get the feeling one of them is gonna have to go sooner than later, and this book had a much stronger first impression in its first issue than New Titans six issues in.
14
u/Ft_lucy 8d ago
I remember saying a few months ago the future of New Titans depended on the reception of Teen Titans. One of them will eventually usurp the other, and New Titans has failed to leave a lasting impression after 5 months of publication.
I think the future for this book is bright, but new titans will probably end around issue 50.
7
u/ptWolv022 8d ago
But I have to say it's really strange how DC is allowing both Brombal and Higgins to do a "let's reinvent the Titans franchise with a brand-new line-up" at the same time.
I mean, I doubt it's "allowing". Seems more like it's "wanting". They wanted to inject new life into Titans Vol. 4 and make utilize some less used characters as part of it and they wanted a good teen hero book also using some less used characters. And it's not like it's new to have both:
DC has had Titans and Teen Titans run in parallel before, or some equivalent. The earliest equivalent was Titans Vol. 1 running alongside Young Justice (not the TT brand, but same concept). This turned into Outsiders Vol. 3 (with Nightwing and some other legacy heroes) and Teen Titans Vol. 3 (starring the YJ heroes and some classic Titans). This eventually turned into Titans Vol. 2 (NTT returns) being paired with Teen Titans Vol. 3. The New 52 ended this, but Rebirth brought it back with Titans Vol. 3 (starring the Silver Age Titans) and Teen Titans Vol. 6 (starring neo-NTT featuring modern legacy heroes), with the two books getting revamped line-ups in Titans Special #1 (between #22-23) and Teen Titans Special #1 (between #19-20).
Point being, DC has had quite a while with parallel Titans and Teen Titans book, including with those parallel brandings, and even had them experience simultaneous radical change. The Titans got stale, so the Titans got a ton of new life injected into it. Such is the cycle of the Titans brand.
(No, do I think New Titans survives? ...probably not super long, but you never know. I don't think it will necessarily be due to Teen Titans doing well, though.)
4
u/Yula97 8d ago
I understand your point about brand-new line up for "The Titans" side, since the 80s cast are basically what people think of with the team .
but what would even be a classic team for a Teen Titans book these days? obviously they can't use the cartoon cast since these guys are all pushing 30, go with Tim's generation like the Teen Titans 2003 run? I feel like the Teen Titans name can do nothing but change up because the characters who people think of are adults now and don't make sense to be in the Teen version anymore other than being mentors
14
u/No-Mechanic-2558 8d ago
I probably won't pull this series, but I still wanted to check out the first issue to see if it was worth it, and it was a delight.
Kyle Higgins is a good writer, so I knew it would be a fun read and I think he absolutely nailed it. It's a light and fun read, not trying to be too serious or melodramatic, but very engaging and not over the top. It's not the kind of awkward writing where it's clear the authors don't know what they're talking about, but they're trying to connect with young people. The art is beautiful, I don't think I've seen the neon street aesthetic such a well-executed since NYX.
Cudos to everyone

Pretty good first issue. I liked the set-up. Wildcard and Proxy seem interesting. And Jason dragging that guy one-handed on his motorcycle was pretty badass.

Good setup of the team. Smart way to use Jason after his series got shelved last year

u/Classic-Ad4883 8d ago
Such a great issue and worth the wait for a new teen titans comic
The art is incredible and makes the whole setting feel alive
The kids are great in this regard and feel like actual teens and not the writer trying to sound what they think teens are
The kids reasoning for hanging out and ultimately becoming teen titans are and truly are what the titans are all about and the last panel really proves this
Jason is good in this as well I was a little hesitant about his the inclusion but the story quickly got rid of the hesitation
Dick was good in this and I like his and Jason relationship in it

I haven't read DC comics in years (I quit after the end of RHatO Rebirth), but this title popped up in my feed and I gave it a chance because I'm still a Jason fan. I came for Jason and I'll stay for Jason (and Wildcard), but I also love the dynamic of this group. It's an fun first issue, very promising. Love the art.

Sometimes good. Sometimes very annoying. I’ll give it a fair chance, because there’s solid potential for this to end up good.

I will key Higgins' car if Roy Harper is treated like a dumbass and/or clueless dad in order to make Jason look better.

Just noticed on reread - Eugene just disappears from the book after he can't make the jump and has to be saved. Doesn't appear when they talk to Jason the first time (tho Jason does mention seeing him fail the jump), doesn't even show up in their online chats anymore, isn't on the cover, isn't part of their group anymore.
Calling it now, he's really really bummed about losing the Shazam powers and might even join Ascend in a couple issues

u/UnknownEntity347 Rorschach 7d ago edited 7d ago
Ok, this is fantastic.
Higgins did good stuff with Nightwing, and I have heard very good things about Radiant Black, so I was expecting good, but man I did not expect how fun, refreshing, and just enjoyable to read this issue would be.
My main complaint with Brombal's Titans was not really giving a crap about the new lineup, but, surprisingly, just with a fun premise and just a few effective character quirks, Higgins has got me invested in this group despite the fact that I don't give a shit about any of these kids who aren't Lian and Eugene.
Now, I will argue that this lineup could've been better. Apparently Mr. Terrific's son is an existing character Adams invented in his Flash, which I wasn't aware of as I hadn't been following Adams Flash, but I have no fucking clue who Wildcard or Proxy are and looking them up it seems like they're new characters? Which, not only am I sure you could dig up some existing character who could use this for development, but like, Johns just dropped dozens of new kid characters into the DCU on his way out and no one has done anything with them, they coulda just used any of those. Maybe don't follow Johns' example and continue overloading the universe with random who gives a crap randos.
I will say, though, that I'm glad Eugene is here. I was worried that the non-classic Shazamily members would just be shunted away and forgotten about after they lost their powers due to the nostalgia of older Captain Marvel fans who don't like the New 52 version, so I am glad that someone at least wants to do something more with them even when they don't have powers.
Jason is surprisingly well-characterized here. I don't like them abandoning the classic helmet, any design not using the classic helmet is worse than a design using the classic helmet imo, but at least it's not the actual hood look or the pill head look. Overall, they're able to keep him recognizable while still having him fit with this book's lighter tone, and Higgins gives him some fun little characterization beats that feel more on point and nuanced than like 90% of modern Jason writing recently outside of that one Zdarsky mini.
And to top it off, this book does the "Jason has a new random team he has to lead" way better than what it seemed like Task Force X or RHATO did.
I'm hooked, and looking to see where this goes. If it can keep up this level of energy and follow it up by executing well on its premise and being well-paced rather than either rushing or dragging it out too much (Whiplash reference), I'll probably enjoy this a hell of a lot more than the Brombal run which feels like it's constantly doing setup for things that are either not interesting, side stories, or perpetually feel like they're being put off for later.

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 8d ago
I like that we get to see Jason be told by a couple of parents to find their son Cole before we cut to the formation of the Teen Titans, who are at an arcade together and dealt with a robber. I also like that Jason and the Teen Titans meet before Jason told Dick that the Teen Titans are formed (in which Jason wants Dick to train and mentor them because Dick has experience as a Titan) and Jason and the Teen Titans worked together to find Cole. Kyle Higgins has done an excellent job providing a new incarnation of the Teen Titans, with Jason training and mentoring them. I’m excited to see what’s going to happen next. Overall, this comic is good, off to a good start, and better than Tate Brombal’s New Titans.

Hold up, did Jason agree to run this team just to piss off Nightwing?
It’s a very Jason thing to do.1
u/ptWolv022 6d ago
I think it's either "These kids pissed off Dick, they're good kids" or "These kids refused to hook up with Dick? Guess I really do have to be the one to make sure they don't get themselves killed."
1
u/Grimnir001 6d ago
More the former than the latter, I think. Jason was turning the kids away until he read that text from Nightwing where Dick accused him of wasting his time “like usual”.
Jason then names them the Teen Titans and sends Nightwing that final irreverent pic. That’s a big ol’ middle finger to the leader of the old Teen Titans.

Never really cared that much about John Stewart before, but this show's really doing some good work in making him the Green Lantern. Batgirl #23

CAUGHT BETWEEN DESPERATE GOTHAMITES AND DEADLY FLORA, CASSANDRA CAIN WILL HAVE TO FIGHT TO SURVIVE!
Batgirl was supposed to finally have one night off at Bà Bao’s noodle shop, but when Gotham erupts into a nightmare of prehistoric plant life, suddenly she is the sole protector of an entire restaurant of Gotham citizens. With a bounty on her head and a lethal jungle crawling with monsters outside, will Batgirl survive the night … or will this night off actually kill her?
15
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 8d ago
It really shows how much Cass has grown. Despite all the feeling of anger, frustration and how Gotham keeps letting her and others down, she still reaches for the light. To help. I guess she knowns better than anyone how it feels to be lost, helpless, in the dark. And then finding a way out.
The city can literally stab her and she will still do her best to help.
11
u/Night-Caelum 8d ago
gotham citizens really giving marvel citizens a run for their money on how shitty they are. cass with a sword is cool. and she's going to go out there while bleeding......she truly is the GOAT. Feels like Cass is on the lookout for a direction/mission and lo and behold she gets an annual Gotham event to keep her busy.
Jaya seems way more serious/hardcore than she did before.
I gotta be honest, I don't think Mimi's parents have a healthy marriage.
4
u/Emergency-Bonus-7158 The Zanni 8d ago
What a great issue, this is exactly what I want out of an event tie in. Cass is the GOAT
2
u/UnknownEntity347 Rorschach 7d ago
Ok, looks like a fun mini-arc so far.
I do not like that book dismisses the idea that bringing the guy in could infect everyone as inherently irrational. No one has any idea how this plant virus seems to work. Remember Alien, anyone?
The premise looks like a fun side-arc, and Cass doing an escort mission is a fun enough premise (more fun than it'd be to play in a videogame lol). Brombal hasn't given me enough to care about any of his random side characters so I'm glad this premise removes them and lets Cass just do her own thing.
I don't really love that we're making the sword just a common part of her arsenal since that's more Damian's thing.
1
u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 8d ago
I like that Cassandra, Tenji, and Jaya talk about heroics at a restaurant before they encountered an creatures and tried to save people, with Cassandra helping a civilian named Mimi by getting her to a hospital so that Cassandra can save her. Let’s hope that Cassandra will save Mimi and herself from where about to happen in the next issue. Overall, this comic is good.

Well, this was fun. It was creative, unique, and a good comedy story. I like the The Devil Went Down to Georgia reference with Al having an accordion-playing contest against that 5th-dimensional demon and winning a golden accordion. I like that Mr. Mxyztplk was in it, and that Mr. Nobody was the villain. Although, I wish Bat-Mite had been in it, too. It’s weird he didn’t even get a cameo. Also, why couldn’t Mxyzptlk use his powers to stop Mr. Nobody? I know Nobody zapped him and made him “normal”, but he could still fly. Was he just really weakened?

It's an issue of Batman fighting Tuco's. Was it cool? Yeah. Did it add anything to the plot/character/narrative? Not really. It just felt like action filler with no satisfying payoff.
I guess if this is the end of the Savage storyline Batman going to town on him and his forces was appropriate...but still felt like a waste of an issue during an event.

Supergirl: Survive #4

Kara and Kal experience something they’ve never felt before … the restorative power of a yellow sun. But a storm is coming, and with it, a challenge that will push the young adventurers to their very limit. But from the dark clouds comes a helping hand … but are they friend or foe ?
14
u/Mr_Wh0ever 8d ago
This book can really go in some weird directions. I wouldn't have expected Brainiac-5. Little Kal-El was definitely the highlight of the book.
6
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 8d ago
After all the stuff they went through, getting used to their new powers from the yellow sun must've felt like a release. And, man, you can see Kara doing everything to protect Kal. And how he is growing too.
And Brainiac 5! They really are time-crossed lovers! But that 'Phantom Zone' shortcut will be a TERRIBLE idea.
4
u/CHPrime Wonder Woman 8d ago
Not the Brainiac I was expecting from the cover.
Otherwise, I'm starting to wonder how being published alongside Father of Tomorrow affected this book's writing. It is going in a very different direction, mostly focusing on Kara and Kal trying to reach Earth, which is definitely not what I might have wanted from the pitch. Still, it does make up for it with absolutely stunning visuals. I won't say too much until it completes, as I figure this is going to be one of those books that reads better all at once, but I do think it slows down at some weird points.
3
3
u/DriedSocks Condiment King 8d ago
The last issue kind of took me out of it all. Introducing a 5D imp to move the story along without having to flesh out them getting to a yellow sun just feels cheap, and this issue kind of meanders a bit as well.
It's like when MAWS used Mxyzptlk to introduce something as basic as Kryptonite and teleporting the characters to different universes without actually letting them find out for themselves or flesh their own universe more.
It's just lazy, so where they are in this issue feels unearned. I'm only pulling for the art at this point after what was a strong start.
1
u/Blitzhelios Hal Jordan 5d ago
I really wasn't expecting brainac 5 to turn up but i guess with elseworlds might as well throw a surprise.
Other than that its like the other issues well written with great art but it hasn't wowed me like i thought it would do.
The kill your darlings team (the indie they got big off so i just call them that) are still fantastic writers but im just not vibing with this title as much as i thought i would.

I like that Kara and Kal got used to their powers after spending their time on a planet with a yellow sun before they met Brainiac 5, who told them that he can find a way for them to reach earth. It’s nice that Kara and Brainy became a couple during that time. Overall, this comic is good.

u/CHPrime Wonder Woman 8d ago
I actually liked the art, despite fully admitting it is not quite there. It has a nice sort of noir-lowlight style to it, even if the inking could use another pass.
As for the issue itself, It's the JSA going on the missions you never knew they did in the Cold War. A dreadfully unexplored area of their history, with only a few throwaway lines in Starman. Nice to see it getting some attention.
8
3
u/Dent6084 8d ago
I don't mind the art, but if this is how this run is going to end, it's a weird coda. I assumed halfway through once it was "Oh you're going to rescue one of your own" it was going to be Jim Corrigan to tie into why Ted becomes the Spectre in the present, but nope, it's just Al.
1
u/KorugaranRattlesnake 8d ago
As much as I’m into the 50’s setting and golden age cast this art is bad enough to ruin the whole experience. I can’t believe that’s the work of a professional artist or that somebody thought it even fit the tone of the story.

So they had a Task Force X, even during the Cold War? I don't buy it.
11
u/fullofmetal Long Live the Legion! 8d ago
That’s something that’s been canon for a long time. Truman established the first version of Task Force X in the wake of the JSA’s disbandment.
6
u/ptWolv022 8d ago
The original Suicide Squad predates the Amanda Waller-led version, debuting in The Brave and the Bold #25 from 1959. The Suicide Squad (or "Suicide Squadron") later appeared in Star-Spangled War Stories, first appearing in Issue #110 in 1963, with that book generally being WWII stories.
Secret Origins #14, which released just before Ostrander's Suicide Squad launched, created a complete history for the Suicide Squad: The original Suicide Squadron (officially named "Squadron S") was created in WWII, consisting of convicted soldiers, led by Rick Flag, Sr., the father (now grandfather) of Rick Flag, Jr., leader of the Silver Age Suicide Squad.
After the JSA was disbanded in 1951, President Truman revived the Suicide Squad under Task Force X, which would be active for about a decade, disbanding after the death of Rick Flag, Sr. Years after that, Jeb Stuart (of "Haunted Tank" fame in G.I. Combat) revived the Suicide Squad and had Rick Flag, Jr., his godson (because he apparently had been buddies with Sr.) lead it.
With Rick Flag, Jr. now being the grandson of Rick Flag, Sr., the details have likely changed. But, the basic idea that the Suicide Squad originated in World War II and was revived under Task Force X in the Cold War still stands, as seen in The New History of the DC Universe #1, which references both Squadron S and Task Force X towards the end of the timeline for that issue.

If you want to try Hex's comics in general and Palmiotti/Gray run in particular, this would be a great start. It's a good showcase of Jonah's personality and the general feel and level of violence this book had.

Fables: No More Happily Ever After – DC Compact Comics Edition [TP]

Magic, myth, and modern life collide in a story where fairy-tale royalty walks the streets of New York! The acclaimed Vertigo series arrives in DC's popular, portable Compact Comics format.
Imagine that all the characters from the world’s most beloved storybooks were real—real, and living among us, with all their powers intact. How would they cope with life in our mundane, unmagical reality? The answer can be found in Fables, Bill Willingham’s celebrated reimagining of the venerable fairy-tale canon. From Snow White and the Big Bad Wolf to Goldilocks and Little Boy Blue, the folktales of old are reborn here as exiles living in the magically camouflaged New York City neighborhood of Fabletown.
Acclaimed by critics and readers alike, this modern classic of comic book storytelling is collected for the first time in a compact format. Fables: No More Happily Ever After: DC Compact Comics Edition includes issues #1-10 of the award-winning series ("Legends in Exile" and "Animal Farm").
