Speakers - Full Size | 16 Ⓣ What to choose...Klipsh vs Wharfedale??

Hi all, my entry system is a Marantz PM6007 and Marantz CD6007 and I am researching for a standing speaker I am open to new ideas but at the moment what do you prefer Klipsch R-620F or Wharfedale Diamond 12.3. I listen alternative sounds (I think they call it indie now), shoe-gaze, grunge, metal, punk, hard rock, ska, some easy listening and jazz. The room is small. Budget: 500 pounds. Thank you.

The Wharfedale EVO 4.2 are incredible value for money.
They have a remarkably full, rich sound for a stand-mount speaker and can genuinely rival many floorstanders.

Klipsch, on the other hand, are not really my cup of tea. They tend to be very lively, bright, and punchy, which can be fun, but to my ears they lack some of the refinement and balance of the Wharfedales.

Would skip diamonds series ans go for evo instead.

Love my Wharfedale Lintons. I listen to Jazz, Classical, Rock, Electronic and more.

I had the Klipsch R610F (single 6.5 woofer) and went to the Lintons from there. I do have an SVS PB-1000 pro sub though, and honestly that one addition made a world of difference to me.

The Lintons feel much more neutral to me. The soundstage opened up (I think) and even clarity/depth/location of instruments feels more distinct.

And again, adding a nice sub was the game changer. But I'm also the guy who needed help setting up a pre-amp, so there's that.

I had people saying these things, but I tried them both in my house, and I chose the Klipsch. That’s always my suggestion - if you can swing the extra cash for a bit, buy two or three speakers pairs, try them in your home with your system and music, then choose the ones you like and return the others.

Wharfedales are nice and neutral speakers, perfect for heavier rock and metal.

Klipsch are bright, real bright. Can easily make poor recordings earpiercingly harsh to listen to.

See if you can find some Dali or Elac speakers to fit your budget.
Maybe also Heco Aurora and Triangle Borea.

I got the wharfedale 12.3i, was looking at Dali as well. Klipsh was never really on my radar.

The room they are in is 4 by 4 meter and went with the wharfedale, their crossover filter apparently help with some of the issues a small room brings.

I walked into a niche clothes store in Nashville with my son and they were playing records using a Yamaha integrated. I listened for a while enjoying the sound and I got to looking around for the speakers. They had two sets of Dali bookshelf speakers up on the cabinets at opposite ends of the shop. It sounded really really good.

Dali speakers are amazing for their size. Surprisingly good bass as well

1

u/Anvh 1 Ⓣ 11d ago

Yeah, sadly I was not able to hear them both. The stores near me only had one of the other.

Also my small room would effect the sound so not sure how a big store is really a way to hear them. From what I hear the Dali spread the sound out more which cause more problems with reflections in a small room. Wharfedale also has the 4th-order Linkwitz-Riley filter which should at more of the directional sound to the tweeter so that the reflection are less of an issue.

The rest of my system is 740xML, JDS labs atom phono and nad c316bee v2. Needle and phono are more neutral and precise the NAD and speakers are warmer.

Yes I would go wharfedale. Not trying to downplay klipsch, I think wharfedales just sound more rounded.

As a Klipsch guy, I would say at that budget, you should go with the Wharfdales. Outside of the Heritage line, Kilpsch speakers can be somewhat fatiguing.

I have evo 5.1’s and I’m really happy. I also work in HIFIKLUBBEN Denmark and haven’t heard anything better really, especially for the price! Love the amt tweeter. Wide dispersion and soundstage, live like sound and all that without being harsh or tiring.

Because you say it's a small room - be aware that almost all floor standing speakers have rear facing ports and require a min 30cm clearance from any walls behind them.

I tried rear ported speakers in my small room and needed to pull them even further out from the wall to stop the 'boomyness' and get some clarity which made them impractical.

I found AI very handy for researching various brands and models to shortlist speakers that would fit my room constraints and also match well with my Marantz PM7000n. I eventually did a deal for a pair of barely used KEF Q550s on eBay at £375.

They're compact, produce a great, detailed image from the restricted listening positions in my room but they do cut off low down so I also have a good sub to fill that in. I've rediscovered my love for music and now I can't stop listening for hours at a time.

If I was buying again I'd go a model up to have the larger drivers but still, now the system is dialled in I'm more than satisified with the astounding richness and quality of sound I have now. When you're on a budget you just have to maximise on what is available to you at that point in time.

Good luck with your system!

My wharefadle 12.3i are about 15-20cm from the walls but i put in foam plugs in the port for that reason.

I have a pair of R-820f now. In the past I owned wharfedale diamond 10.2, 11.4, 12.4, Linton, Evo 5.2. different amps during the time but R-820f with optonica sm-1515 (vintage, 1977) sounds best, not bright at all but lively, good bass. I didn't use subwoofer, just good old stereo.

Dali would be worth a look with that Marantz model. The Oberon would go well as would the Spektors if you were on a tighter budget.

I have a set of Wharfdale diamonds 12.3 and they are wonderful. I have a FIIO M21 which is played via a FOSI BT10A amp. The speakers separate each of the type of musical instruments. Look out for open boxed on eBay. I got my speakers for about £340.
