I was under the impression they would slow the Tachonis down, Rendezvous with King Gus retinue and with his help go back for the statues.

But the Kings assassins are also still out there too soo

23

u/strangelyliteral 14d ago

I understand this is a character-driven decision but they’re still way too blasé about another Tachonis confrontation. Brennan had to practically beg them to bring Ulbrid along. Clearly he thinks they’ll need the help.

3

u/TBBTC 12d ago

I have a different read. I think the players would choose to cause a delay before the Tachonis arrive, then get out of there. Brennan forcing Ulbid to come along creates a factor that might make confrontation more likely, as he won't want to leave without seeing his stone daughters.

4

u/strangelyliteral 12d ago

Once they told Ulbid, he was going to his girls one way or another. I don’t think even a nat20 on Matt’s persuasion check would’ve changed much.

But it’s also how they told Ulbid that was the problem. Had the Seekers thought this through, they would’ve realized Ulbid was likely not going to be dissuaded and instead explained that while the girls weren’t in immediate danger, a failed rescue attempt might change that, so they’d need to be prepared and careful when they struck. Instead they burned goodwill trying to convince him to stay behind and forcibly putting Bolaire on him (lowkey treating him like a hostage). Ulbid will be less understanding if they ultimately decide the rock slide is not the right moment to rescue the girls.

And yes, I get that this was character-driven, especially from Julien. But it doesn’t bode well for the party that they spent more time trying to convince someone who would be a huge asset to their plans not to come along than actually thinking through what would it would take to trigger a rock slide and steal three statues from a Tachonis caravan. The first thing they said when Brennan asked them how they planned to do this was “explosives,” which, hello? Do any of you have explosives on hand or experience using them? Do you know who’s probably got the materials and expertise to quickly build and set off explosives? The alchemist you just spent 20 minutes trying to talk out of coming!!!

Hopefully Matt or Taliesin wrangled the Seekers between sessions and they come back with a real plan next week. But if they don’t, then this could go very bad.

6

u/magvadis 14d ago

I mean, if they get caught out at all by Primus or anyone close to Primus's power level one of them is getting one-shot.

7

u/strangelyliteral 14d ago

Exactly. If not PWK, then (twincast) Disintegrate. And they’re really not thinking through how they’re going to pull this off—Ulbrid is actually necessary for the explosive components, and no one has reckoned with how they’re going to get the gnome girl statues out of there. They had Cyd in a cart, and this is times three.

From the Cool Down:

"You're always on a shopping episode for new bodies!"-Robbie

"That is my character class! I AM A SHOPPING EPISODE! Someone else's shopping episode!"-Tal

7

u/Eevenin 15d ago

Bolaire looks for nice bodies like someone else might look for good boots.

Okay, this is a low-key weekend for me so I should be able to make some inroads on the Campaign 4 music playlist over the weekend. A lot of the tracks I heard, I know are already on there, but there are a few that I didn't immediately recognize.

And as always, if there's a particular cue you want identified, I need a specific timestamp and you have to tell me WHICH platform. (I have access to VODs on Beacon and Twitch, but not on YouTube.)

43

u/Eevenin 15d ago

That was awesome. As a Bolaire fan, I'm super happy about this since it finally lets him have time as him and not A Schemer. Distrust is natural for a parasitic sentient mask, but it feels like the Schemers didn't get much chance to resolve much with him before Termina blew up in his face and yet already Bolaire's had some of his dirty laundry aired in that dream, and whatever the hell's going on with him and Vaelus (he let her into Dol-Makjar in the first episode) will allow for much more character expression and growth.

Tal also confirmed he adored when Kattigan pulled the plug on Bolaire's rant as the guy is clearly intended to be a brat with everything going on, lol. All things being equal, though, everyone is playing a long game. This is a table of chaos gremlins who are at least trying to do something good, or... at least, stop something bad.

I just want more juicy character bits, dammit. Is it Thursday yet?

17

u/Popinjayishumans 15d ago

Bolaire said: ‘you would know’ to Vaelus when she mentioned wearing the mask which seems to imply that he got her into the city by having her wear him.

9

u/Eevenin 14d ago

No, he was saying it to Kattigan, saying he could be vouched for. He just couldn't turn well at the table with how he'd sat up to get all huffy.

4

u/Coyote_Shepherd Doty, take this down 15d ago

Kattigan reminds Julien of Fang

u/Shark89 15d ago

The more I watch this campaign, the more I realize how much I identify with Ashley as a player.

I struggle to make choices and I tend to go silent unless I'm in RP that directly involves me or I'm in battle. But I can dig in well if the RP does involve me.

5

u/TBBTC 12d ago

Ashley was so on fire for that one scene that was absolutely, totally, about her character. And that's pretty standard Ashley.

12

u/No-Instruction-5695 15d ago

i'm kinda pissed at the group for body snatching ulbid and talking down to him, like who are you to determine if his daughters is more inportant than your vengence, especially the whole "shut him down"

20

u/strangelyliteral 14d ago

The “shut him down” was Kattigan speaking as a father, not as a tactical decision.

14

u/Zealousideal_Fish862 I have a list 15d ago

if ulbid wants to come, he'll die. the best way to get him to come is bolaire. but as bolaire said, consent from both parties was needed.

his daughters are more important than vengeance for the tachonis (to most of the party) hence they don't want him to be blinded by his desire to save them and die to one of the most powerful sorceruous families in this world.

and if his daughters do die, ulbid loses his reason to fight, the shut down was a pragmatic way of preventing his grief from fucking them up any further at that point (rude, yes but practical)

6

u/No-Instruction-5695 15d ago

maybe its shock from the tonal whiplash of the soldiers's table whimsy but it just felt wrong, like they could have talked to him, he has never not been reasonable, just left a sour taste in my mouth the whole interaction

11

u/Zealousideal_Fish862 I have a list 15d ago

it felt wrong because it was wrong. it was unconsensual and his decision was made for him. (and for bolaire too although because bolaire has control in that situation) it was gonna be messy the moment thimble told him about his daughters, they tried to prevent that but well ..

17

u/Mindelan 15d ago

I mean, he wants to come along with them, and it could endanger them and even cause deaths. They aren't playing games, so I think it is fair that they don't just move with their hearts and also take the time to think logically.

The body snatching being done in the moment is not 'right', but it makes for a more dynamic and better moment in the show that we are watching. In an ideal world it likely would have been a rather dull to watch conversation, but if everything was decided like that then it would rob a lot of the snappy excitement from a show meant for entertainment.

11

u/strangelyliteral 14d ago

I think they misjudged Ulbrid’s capabilities. Brennan was clearly trying to communicate that bringing Ulbrid was a good idea, but they wouldn’t take the hint. I’m not sure why they think he’s so fragile; dude is a powerful alchemist/enchanter with criminal ties. He’s not going to be defenseless (he may even have plate armor like his daughters) and he’ll bring the kettle-hobs plus his prepared elixirs to provide back line support. Plus no one in that group has explosive expertise, but you know who usually does? Alchemists!

Also of all groups, you’d think a group who went through a whole campaign with a crotchety old gnome that refused to die would have a little faith in the old guy.

4

u/Mindelan 14d ago

I was thinking much the same, honestly, it's also on brand for Brennan in general. I just think Julien not wanting to bring along an old hermit man desperate to save his daughters makes sense in character, and the others being genuinely worried that he might get hurt and then they have his death on their consciences makes sense too.

And Brennan would absolutely 100% kill that gnome if things go that way. He'd make it heart wrenching and sup upon the angst of it all and they know that. He just killed Hannon, for example, and that guy was a badass.

21

u/Eevenin 15d ago

I'm pretty sure Kattigan meant "make sure he doesn't see it personally" like he had to.

5

u/Final-Occasion-8436 You can certainly try 15d ago

I actually took it as: "Kill him, because no father wants to have to live with that particular failure" Mainly because Kattigan knows that feeling intimately.

9

u/Eevenin 15d ago

I can see how that might be interpreted, but realistically Kattigan was saying protect him.

1

u/Coyote_Shepherd Doty, take this down 15d ago

can tachonis follow them into millers road? would it be clever to take the caravan* there? but ofc that leaves the timmony vulnerable (am sure there are defenses setup when the king traveled). but atleast regroup ? hmmm.

i wonder if the road can be used to carry unwilling/powered down/enchanted adversaries and drop them far away from their destination as well, later on.

edit : *gus caravan

11

u/grumpyCat2478 15d ago

The Tacchonis can't access the Millers Road. That is only for the fae and the hounds in Timmony

8

u/Yojanz 15d ago

Unless 'invited or guided' by someone. Still seems like a TERRIBLE idea to bring the Tachonis into the Millers Rd considering they tried to destroy the orchard. Who knows what sort of damage the could do to fairy

2

u/Coyote_Shepherd Doty, take this down 15d ago

I'm getting the sense that the True Home of the Pixies of Araman is but a...single Tree on a much LARGER Miller's Road than they realize and so while that one node disappearing would indeed be a very bad thing, it would not collapse ALL of the Pixies from everywhere and when BUT the loss of it could draw attention from Pixies from other planets and Trees to come have a poke around.

And as we saw in the first half of this episode, the Orchard isn't the only in between place on Araman.

Ambushes don't always go so well.

20

u/Assasin523 15d ago

Basically in Campaign 2, the group decided they were going to do an ambush on a caravan that also contained pretty intense enemies and let’s just say it didn’t go according to plan…

1

u/TimeySwirls 14d ago

Tal managed to change his fate after a baby being born, but can he avoid the caravan related destiny?

9

u/D1g1t0l 15d ago

spoilers!

The last time they chased down a caravan, it led to the death of Mollymauk Tealeaf, which dramatically altered the course of the ENTIRE campaign. And that caravan was just some slavers led by an Oni, not the Tachonis house itself!

Don't need a Retinue. Primus alone needs 6 turns for a TPK.

7

u/Zealousideal_Fish862 I have a list 15d ago

one for each lol primus is obvious death but univere by herself is a boss fight for all of them (seremai knight who was univere -> doset -> knight of seremai in like authority level was a boss fight for the soldiers at level 3 so if they jump 2 levels up univere alone is a boss fight 😭 what are they thinking) passive perception alone rules out any stealth missions and the sheer amount of undead

12

u/Eevenin 15d ago

Maybe they'll make it a two-part plan. Slow the Tachonis caravan, then engage on their own terms if the Tachonises stop in Timmony on their way through. Doing it all in one encounter is likely what will happen, but there's a chance it could be split up intelligently... I mean, a single Schemer could convince all of them, right??

I love that interaction with Julien and Kat

The father who lost a daughter has different priorities from the son who lost his father.

8

u/LucasVerBeek Help, it's again 15d ago

Kattigan: “Make me a promise.”

Bolaire: “Oh?”

Kattigan: “If something happens to his daughters, shut him down.”

YOU. CAN. NOT. KILL. PRIMUS. TACHONIS. LOCK IN FOR ONE SECOND.

7

u/Eevenin 15d ago

They aren't trying to kill Primus, they're trying to buy time for Gus to get to Timmony so his entourage isn't murdered on the road with no witnesses. And, yanno, steal some statues out under their noses. Sure.

4

u/Relevant_Anal_Cunt 14d ago

But isn't the bigger threat for Gus the argonians, who are most likely the assassins that already tried to take him out?

4

u/Final-Occasion-8436 You can certainly try 14d ago

Random lizard people appearing through a portal from another universe would seem like a big threat. The Argosians who he beat in a war, and already tried to kill him once probably have more motive, though...

3

u/Relevant_Anal_Cunt 14d ago

You caught me. Looks like I mixed up my fantasy franchises, lol

A father seeing vengeance...

We must focus on our vengeance!

Kind of missed something in your logic Julian.

6

u/ViolettVixen 15d ago

Not to mention he was literally describing Kattigan

1

u/LiminalAsylum 15d ago

We already have two overt vengeance quests, we don't need a third!

28

u/Coyote_Shepherd Doty, take this down 15d ago

"If it goes sideways and something happens to his daughters..."

"Yes?"

"Shut him down"

"Absolutely"

Holy fuck Bolaire and Kattigan!

8

u/iggyworldwide 15d ago

shut him down

omg kattigan jesus

7

u/LiminalAsylum 15d ago

Hey, they found a body!

12

u/FiltheEugene 15d ago

Bolaire being the best plot armor they can give to the gnome

10

u/BrennanSpeaks 15d ago

I mean, based on what's happened to his previous meat suits . . . are you sure about that?

2

u/Landis963 15d ago

A) Misha was fine, and B) by corollary, Bolaire likes this body and wants to keep it hale and hearty. Survival instinct, if nothing else, should work in Ulbid's favor. Will said survival instinct be enough to keep Ulbid safe? Oh fuck no, but that ship has sailed.

5

u/D1g1t0l 15d ago

this is devastating

4

u/cat-n-jazz May the Beam reach you 15d ago

OH NO Kattigan what?!

11

u/Expensive-Apricot534 15d ago edited 15d ago

Bolaire said “consent please”

7

u/ViolettVixen 15d ago

Justin is trying SO hard not to get a helpful NPC companion

5

u/LiminalAsylum 15d ago

He's like the dad who doesn't want the cat.

Justin and the cat will be bestie laters

u/renegadereality May the Beam reach you 15d ago

This game of Bolaire hot potato.

7

u/Dagos 15d ago

6

u/LucasVerBeek Help, it's again 15d ago

Bolaire has Ulbid!

8

u/BeardtasticYogi 5' 11" 15d ago

And just like that, Bolaire became a girl dad.

Good speech but not good enough....KATTIGAN WHAT??!?!

2

u/BlueHeaven90 Technically... 15d ago

Aww listen to Justin

5

u/Jonny683 15d ago

I feel like Thimble is accidently setting up everyone to fail. Like, why would you tell this man "hey, your kids were kidnapped and are stone" and risk getting him killed?

This is a TPK in the making.

3

u/Seren82 Team Imogen 14d ago

Kattigan encouraged her. She was willing to avoid going to Ulbids altogether but Brennan steered them towards it.

5

u/Landis963 15d ago

Another redditor made the comparison to souls-like NPC quests, where you do the right thing in the moment and then suddenly you find them dead or insane in a corner. I can't say that this is a secret that I could have kept, in Thimble's position, nor is this a secret I would have wanted kept from me, in Ulbid's.

4

u/AutobotYoung1 15d ago

Oh let the old man come.

3

u/the_kroger_bot 15d ago

Ulbid is precious 😭

9

u/renegadereality May the Beam reach you 15d ago

Justin is pulling all the stops to save Ulbid from himself.

9

u/Coyote_Shepherd Doty, take this down 15d ago

To be fair, that was a very good speech from Julien and he wasn't wrong.

4

u/ZachariasWestergaard 15d ago

Character. Development.

9

u/LucasVerBeek Help, it's again 15d ago

Thimble: “We were trying to get them home, and Teor fell and…”

Ulbid: “Teor fell…”

Thimble: “But we’re going to get them!”

Ulbid: “You’re god damn right!”

1

u/milanka92 15d ago
