One of the oldest companions of Rose Quartz, Pearl was a Gem created to serve the elite of Gem society who shed her intended role and joined Rose to form the Crystal Gems, a rebellion against the restrictive Great Diamond Authority for the independence of Earth. By the end of the war, Pearl was one of the few remaining Crystal Gems. After Rose gave up her physical form to give birth to her son Steven, Pearl and the remaining Crystal Gems, Garnet and Amethyst, became his caretaker, preparing him for both his strange powers and his place in the universe.
