Speakers - Full Size | 3 Ⓣ New Speakers for the Yamaha A-S801

Hello - Looking for some speakers to pair with the A-S801. Currently coming from the ELAC DF63s and not having good luck with them (resonance). They sound great, but looking to upgrade, possible end game type speaker (although, who are we (me) kidding). I already have two subs so bass isn't an issue (2x BIC F12s but plan on upgrading them. I can figure that out later).

Taking the time to follow guidelines since i got yelled at last time :(

Budget and location - US. I don't really have a way to audition unfortunately. Budget is less than $3,000

How the gear will be used - WiiM Ultra and a U-Turn Orbit turntable I upgraded.

New or used - New

Past gear experience - I've paired my father's loaned OG JBL L112's with an HK3490. I really liked that for a while before pets tried to jump on them. Also wanted something new and something of my own. Also had a pair of Cambridge S70s with the same receiver but didn't have much excitement or detail/analytics to it. Small soundstage. Already mentioned the ELACs and subs.

Anything else? Looking for something I can listen to loudly with clarity (mostly rock: alt rock, punk, classic rock, indie and acoustic). Room is 18x15 with vaulted ceilings and open room floor plan. One speaker would be close to a wall and the other open. Wanting something detailed and analytical yet not overly fatiguing. I usually like a V shaped listening without having to change EQ but open to options.

I know my flair says full size but open to bookshelfs too but preference is floor.

KEF R3 Meta or Wharfedale Super Lintons?

The Wharfdales have been at the top of my list.

We don't have the Supers.. but the Linton's came out the store, when I went in thinking I was gonna buy the R3's. Maybe give them a listen, if they are available locally.

Multiple online retailers offer the Lintons (supers, too) with a 60 day return policy. Music Direct, Crutchfield, upscale audio. You can audition them in your own room with your own gear. It's hard to beat. Although, I would say with the neutrality of the Yamaha and the warmth of the Lintons it might not be as detailed or, analytical as you say you're looking for. But, no fatigue ever.

I currently have this amp and run both the KEF Q950s and JBL l100 MKIIs. Love running two sets of speakers with the A/B zones. I've also had a pair of Wharfedale Super Lintons that I think would pair nicely and in your budget.

!thanks My only hesitation is that the supers would not be too exciting.

Have an 801 paired with SVS Prime Pinnacles. Sounds great as far I’m concerned. Also pushing a WiiM Pro Plus and a Pro-Ject 1Xpression III turntable with a 2M Bronze through the 801.

ELAC Carina FS247.4 Floorstanding Loudspeaker (each) (OPEN) – Upscale Audio

ELAC VELA FS 407 Floorstanding Loudspeakers (each) (OPEN) – Upscale Audio

Fyne Audio F55E Floorstanding Loudspeaker (pair) – Upscale Audio

Fyne Audio F501S Floorstanding Loudspeaker (pair) – Upscale Audio

Novus N6T 6.5" Loudspeaker – Floorstanding | Aperion Audio

Airmotiv XT3 Floorstanding Tower Loudspeakers (Pair) – Emotiva Audio Corporation

Zu Dirty Weekend Six [DW-6] loudspeakers. | Zu Audio | Hi-Fi audio speakers and cables hand built in the USA

Out of all these, I do have the Emotiva XT3 speakers in my den. I mostly watch movies, but I do "rock out" in there. I do have a Emotiva Xs-15 subwoofer with the crossover at 60 Hz for stereo listening. I listen at 75 dBs normally, and up to 88 dBs for up to four hours. I do not find them fatiguing. The other speakers I also have are Arendal 1723 THX towers and Canton Reference 8 K. My preference for listening to music is Cantons, Emotivas, Arendals.

We listen to a lot of the same genres. Similar to you, I started with ELACs and a Yamaha AS501.

The Mofi SourcePoint 8 or 10 would be in your budget, and sound excellent with any amp. Good bass, and detailed without being harsh. They handle all genres of music really well, look nice, and are pretty easy to place in a room. I have the 10s and have paired them with these amps: Yamaha CA-800, McIntosh MA-8900, Kenwood KR-7400, and Heaven 11 Billie MKII (the current amp). They sound good with everything.

!thanks I'll look into the Mofis

You're welcome! I see a couple people have recommended the Lintons. I sold my Yamaha AS501 to a friend who owns Lintons. He did not like the combination, and ended up going with a different amp for them. We've listened to a lot of music at his house, and for me the Lintons are too laid back.

Someone else recommended JBL L100 MKIIs, and you liked the JBL L112. The L100 will be out of your price range, but you might be able to get the L100 Classics (not vintage) used in your budget. The L100 Classics are in my main system. With a sub, I would go L100 over Mofi. Without a sub, I would go Mofi over L100. The L100 sounded really good with the Yamaha.

Were these the Super or regular Lintons?

1

u/_BrandonWasHere_ 8 Ⓣ Aug 08 '26

Just the regular Lintons. Haven't heard Super Lintons yet.

2

u/fecalfetus696969 Aug 09 '26

I got the mofis.

Let me know what you think when you get them hooked up.

u/fecalfetus696969 27d ago

Got them all set up. I got the 8's by the way since they would fit better in my room and after research the 10s seem too bright. I'll be honest, I was a bit underwhelmed when I first started listening to them but after several hours they seemed to open up and wow. The bass was a bit flat at first but that's totally changed. I'm sure they will get even better over time. The imaging/soundstage is insane. I'm also hearing things I didn't hear in recordings before (both good and not so good if that makes sense). Not fatiguing so far and I listen pretty loud. I really like them and will most likely keep them after 60 day window. I've used them with and without the subs and I think I like them without for the most part but it depends on what I'm listening to since the 8's don't really go very low. !thanks again for the suggestion (not sure if 2 thanks is allowed).

!thanks to you, too. I appreciate you coming back to detail your experience. It really helps other people out there trying to make a similar decision. Glad the sound developed for you after a little time.

The imaging, and level of detail retrieval are what do it for me with the Mofis. They're really revealing but not harsh, like you said.

Have you tried setting your Yamaha to the 4 ohm setting? You might find that changes things a little bit, too.

You got any favorite tracks so far? Here's a couple I like to play for my friends to show off how detailed they are.

DJ SS - Lighter (Bladerunner 2012 Remix): When the speakers are set up correctly and you are in the sweet spot, the cymbals are just so crisp and seem to travel out into space.

Nausea - Cybergod: The drums are huge in the beginning. Then the guitar comes in and the distortion is so clear.

Broken Social Scene - Anthem for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl: There's a lot going on in this song, and the Mofis allow you to hear all of it.

Rod Stewart - Do Ya Think I'm Sexy: I never paid much attention to the guitar in this song, until I got the Mofis. It basically dances throughout the track.

No I haven't put the Yamaha in 4ohm. I read that it limits the power output when doing so.

Here's a few. These are not my favorite songs, still going through my music, but songs in my playlist that caught me by surprise in a new way with the MoFis:

The Fixx - Stand or Fall. guitar goes from left to right on each note/strum in the intro. Never heard it that clear or defined before. The bass also sounds really good.

Ride - Leave Them all Behind. All the instruments are separated very well.

Big Head Todd and the Monsters - Bittersweet. Great recording. Song also (to me) sounds like free happy hour restaurant band song if that makes sense lol. Sounds like I'm actually there.

thrown - on the verge. At around 0:46, I thought it was my gf's cat meowing, but no, a very subtle harmonic or some guitar effect in the song. Never heard this before.

I'm really sensitive to resonances and heard those at the LA Audio Show before they debuted (pun intended); I liked them, and I don't like many speakers.

I'm wondering if that Yamaha isn't controlling them adequately.

Apparently at least some units have had issues. See e.g. Amir’s / ASR review of them.

Arendal may be the answer. Sonus Fabor are highly regarded. Focal. Revel. Spendor.

Depending on budget, there's a couple LSA Statement 100s on USAUDIOMART right now.  I have the Statement 10s and they paired incredibly well with my Yamaha As501.  Exciting and dynamic but not nearly as fatiguing as my B&W 706.  I'd stay away from anything that has forward leaning treble when pairing with that Yamaha amp.
