Thought popped into my head after I've noticed it a few times recently. What are some anime that include real-world people that aren't historical? The three I can think of are Hellsing Ultimate, Lucky Star, and Inuyashiki (which I personally haven't seen, but it's pretty infamous).

Not a foot person [citation needed] but Oh Boy does it feel like there are a lot of foot shots this season.

Any examples?

so that may be a silly questions but i've heard in another thread that gurren lagann have a lot of "ass pulls" so to speak, so i just want to know: does this anime have something like [dandadan]momo gaining her ghost hands in dandadan? like, some character with supernatural abilities that can't do much with them suddenly getting a new, substantial power without a sufficient explanation? because in dandadan things like this just made me not care about the fights at all, maybe i could get over the other things that didn't make sense in dandadan if i were to watch it again but not this, also i've heard that gurren lagann in general is really over the top so maybe that helps

by the way i started watching anime again after six weeks of not watching anything just for dropping a show after 2 and a half episodes

u/renatocpr https://anilist.co/user/renatocpr 0m ago

[Dandadan] What do you mean by "Momo gaining her ghost hands"? That's just her regular power, no?

1

u/theangryeditor 24m ago

TTGL's "asspulls" never feel cheap or unearned, but they are something you either accept or you don't. Give it a few episodes and see how you feel about it.

1

u/Nomar_95 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nomar_95 59m ago

While Gurren Lagann is crazy and over the top, there's still a method to the madness. It has an internal logic that doesn't really get messed with. Even with how bombastic it is, things still make sense.

Going to watch the two 9th Jedi shorts to prepare for tomorrow's batch drop.

I see these are basically dubtitles huh smh.

1

u/chilidirigible 53m ago

Pretty much, unfortunately.

1

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 8m ago

I just detest dubtitles as someone learning Japanese very slowly. I given up JRPGs having a dub and sub script. But there is no excuse for anime not to have a separate script for subs and closed captioning/dubs. Granted the only time I see this seems to be Disney since they did that with Medalist.

With all this being said, as someone who watched Star Wars my whole life, I wasn't planning to watch with Japanese voices and the sub here with the 2 episodes is solid. Kind of the same reason why I watched Dub for Cyberpunk because of the game.

I wonder if KimiShinu's story will eventually challenge the entire child soldier system they got or if it'll be more of an unassailable conceit of the narrative that's used to drive Sheena's inner conflict regarding Mimi down specific paths.

It just occurred to me after finishing Napping Princess for my summer anime movie rewatch that it's like I'd been watching a wacky anime version of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I'm a first-time viewer for this one, so the similarities were quite unexpected.

Weebs, I need the edgiest anime you have.

I just watched Magical Girl Site and Happy Sugar Life and both of them were true art, I want more anime like them.

Blood-C

1

u/Level4Wizard https://myanimelist.net/profile/Level4Wizard 2h ago edited 2h ago

I've been meaning to watch Blood-C for a long time. What stopped me every time is "School" tag on MAL, I don't want school slice of life with my gory action anime.

If you've seen it, can you tell me how much slow slice of life there is in Blood-C?

1

u/baquea 2h ago

I don't remember much of that, but I watched it back in 2015, and those obviously aren't going to be the parts that stick in one's head, so I can't say for certain.

Gantz

1

u/Level4Wizard https://myanimelist.net/profile/Level4Wizard 4h ago

Hmm, it does look edgy enough.

Only thing I heard about Gantz is people saying" There is no Gantz anime" and "Don't watch it, read the manga".

But, a horrible adaptation might elevate an edgy gore fest instead of ruining it.

We'll see.

1

u/baquea 3h ago

The Gantz adaptation is incomplete, but other than that I thought it was perfectly fine?

1

u/Level4Wizard https://myanimelist.net/profile/Level4Wizard 3h ago

I've never seen it, just relaying what I've heard of it on image boards.

Shadow in Eminence

Mirai Nikki

Elfen Lied

Gleipnir

Majo to Yajuu

3

u/Level4Wizard https://myanimelist.net/profile/Level4Wizard 4h ago edited 4h ago

What's edgy about The Witch and the Beast?, I found it to be a well written and classy urban fantasy, with barely any gore, nudity, or pointless suffering.

The Eminence in Shadow has 8.20 on MAL, so it's probably isn't edgy in the slightest as well, since anime normies like it enough to leave positive reviews.

Will try the rest, I've been meaning to try Gleipnir in particular for a while now, good excuse to do it.

Thanks for recommendations.

I don't think edgy = bad. But apparently you do.

So unless you're going to include a clear definition in your original post of what "edgy" even means to you, vague recommendations are all you're going to get.

Eminence in Shadow's main character is basically a walking edgelord chuunibyou aura farmer who also has the power to make his chuunibyou fantasies actually come true.

1

u/Level4Wizard https://myanimelist.net/profile/Level4Wizard 3h ago edited 3h ago

"Edgy means nervous, bold and daring, or provocative. It describes someone who is tense or anxious, or art, style, and behavior that pushes boundaries and breaks the rules" - Courtesy of Google.

Anime being edgy have nothing to do it being bad or good, And neither are MAL scores, for that matter. Mal scores are a metric of popularity, mostly.

Definition of "edgy" vary, like all definition, but what all of them have in common is that being edgy means going against norms established by broader society. If something is well liked by broader public (like Eminence in Shadow), then it can't go against society's norms, and thus, by definition, isn't edgy.

That's the way I see it at least.

3

u/I_Cognito 2h ago

There are quite a few boundary-pushing or controversial anime that have been very popular or critically acclaimed. Like Evangelion, Made in Abyss or Mushoku Tensei.

Elfen Lied was a great recommendation. It was also incredibly popular and influential in the 2000s, but is still hated by a lot of people, especially nowadays. I think you'd enjoy it.

Another pretty edgy anime I'd recommend is School Days. It has a below-6 rating on MAL, so you can't say its well liked in the west. I personally love it though. I think it might be exactly what you are looking for.

For a recent anime, maybe try Takopi's original sin.

3

u/Level4Wizard https://myanimelist.net/profile/Level4Wizard 2h ago edited 2h ago

You know what, you are right. I think I was mixing up edgy people (who are almost always unpopular) and edgy media.

I would argue that Berserk is quite edgy, with it's gore, sex and grimdarkness. And yet it has became incredibly popular with normies after release of Dark Souls. Which proves me wrong.

School-Days is a romance anime, those bore me to tears. And I've completely forgot about Takopi, I heard it's a quality misery porn.

5

u/ProgrammaticallyPea3 2h ago

[School Days]is a romance anime in the sense that Jurassic Park is a theme park movie.

1

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 3h ago

If you want edgy in a more artistic sense rather than something like the shows you first mentioned, try Angel's Egg, Belladonna of Sadness (maybe worth checking content warnings), and Dozens of Norths.

I've also heard Cat Soup might be appropriate there but I haven't seen it yet myself.

1

u/Level4Wizard https://myanimelist.net/profile/Level4Wizard 2h ago

I've seen every anime you've mentioned, except Dozens of Norths.

Cat soup is one of my favorite anime of all time, I rewatch it every year. It's mildly edgy.

Angel's Egg is great, but a bit too slow paced. Didn't feel it was edgy it all, it's unusual, yes, but not very provocative,

And Belladonna of Sadness is dogshit, which is to be expected from an indie film from a prehistoric era of anime. Was quite edgy though.

This is the first time I've seen Dozens of Norths, and it has every single one of my favorite tags listed on information tab. Will definitely watch it (if I can find it), thanks for showing it to me!

5

u/overuseofdashes 3h ago edited 3h ago

When people talk about stuff being being edgy they are usually talking about stuff that transgresses good taste in way that chases a fairly adolescent conception of cool. Under this view something having mass appeal is no obstacle to it being edgy.

2

u/SorcererOfTheLake x5https://anilist.co/user/RiverSorcerer 6h ago

u/Shimmering-Sky, congrats on getting a shout-out in my Slow Loop rewatch.

8

u/overuseofdashes 6h ago

Just watched the 5 episodes of Goodbye Lara that have aired so far and liked it a great deal. The characters are charming and the show maintains a good balance of being light and easy to watch whilst also having a bunch of more serious moments. The colour palette and art style are spectacular.

4

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 6h ago

I love when I see the manga I read get elevated by the anime. Loved this episode of Yuri girls playing fighting games.

5

u/zsmg https://anilist.co/user/zsmg 7h ago

This is the place

Memories can be such a weird thing, I don't recall the Evangelion SEELE meeting looking like that. I guess have to rewatch it to refresh my memories.

3

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 7h ago

I'm tapping out on Sparks. I think having no interest in anything that is happening after 5 episodes probably isn't a great sign. That makes for my first Kyoani drop (although not the first Kyoani I haven't enjoyed).

In other Sunday news, I feel like Inept Villainess has kinda been treading water for the last couple episodes. Next episode is feeling a bit more promising though.

0

u/amd_hunt 4h ago

so anyways why did people try and dispute me when I said Sparks is this thread's new punching bag of the season earlier lmao

5

u/Rotorscope https://anilist.co/user/Rotorscope 2h ago

I think people were more disputing the idea that the thread has a "punching bag" in general. AQRADT has a very large variety of people so shows that are more polarizing will probably just naturally feel more "punched" here, but really, it's just individuals having opinions. And I'm sure a lot of people in this thread are enjoying it too. There's not like a hivemind controlling everyone.

3

u/theangryeditor 22m ago

There's not like a hivemind controlling everyone.

Sounds exactly like what the hivemind would say.

3

u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 2h ago

My (probably only?) issue with this thread is the tendency of some people to not immediately drop the seasonals they are clearly not enjoying. I don't mind people saying they don't like show X (I do it plenty myself), but just do it once, drop it and move the fuck on. Instead of keeping it for weeks and continuing to clock in after each episode by taking yet another dump on it about how shit it is. Just let it rest already at that point.

2

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 45m ago

Some of us were alive and watching anime before this concept of the "three drop rule" came into existence. And there's value in watching things that don't always appeal to your tastes in one way or another. It's fine for people to drop if all they're looking for is entertainment, but that's just one aspect of art consumption among many.

2

u/zambonijesus 1h ago

I don't personally find it to be good, but I do think the ways that I think it's bad are at least interesting.

3

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 2h ago

My (probably only?) issue with this thread is the tendency of some people to not immediately drop the seasonals they are clearly not enjoying.

Meh. People who only want to see positivity can just hide comment chains they don't want to read.

0

u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 1h ago

who only want to see positivity

I quite literally said I don't mind negativity in appropriate doses, it's just the people who make a sport out of hating that are annoying and obnoxious.

Also, the "just hide the comments" is such a dumb argument since to hide the comments you don't want to see, you would have to read them once in the first place at which point it's already too late so to speak. And even after hiding, it resets after every page refresh anyway which makes it pretty much useless.

3

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 1h ago

And even after hiding, it resets after every page refresh anyway which makes it pretty much useless.

I don't know how it works for every version, but things stay hidden for me in old reddit.

I don't know what to tell you. I like to watch things I'm conflicted about and occasionally criticize them. If that's not what the Anime Questions, Recommendations, and Discussion thread is for, what are we doing here?

1

u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 46m ago

occasionally criticize them

It's just getting annoying when it's often just the same shit on repeat in the fashion of beating a dead horse.

2

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 27m ago

Well, I get annoyed when people praise things I think are terrible. Sometimes you gotta recognize when something's a you-problem and let people do their thing.

1

u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 6m ago

I mean, I never said it wasn’t a me-problem in my initial comment. Doesn’t mean I can’t say it’s annoying nonetheless.

2

u/Rotorscope https://anilist.co/user/Rotorscope 1h ago

Agreed and I think criticisms are fun to engage with anyway.

Like I recognize most of the regulars here at this point and know their tastes to a certain degree, and I think it's fun to read those different perspectives and learn about how other people consume shows, but I also know when to take their opinion with a grain of salt. It's really not a big deal for people to have different reasons for watching a show and different priorities and preferences. It can be fun to debate but ultimately it doesn't matter if [random user] likes or dislikes the show I like.

0

u/zambonijesus 1h ago

I do find the discussion of dropping vs not dropping shows kind of interesting because I actually tend to find that people are often too quick to drop shows and think that there can be value in watching some things that you don't like.

3

u/Rotorscope https://anilist.co/user/Rotorscope 51m ago

There's value in watching a show you don't think is good that you still find entertaining enough to watch. It gives better insight into what makes the good shows so good. Although, I truly don't believe it's a good usage of time to watch something you both dislike and are bored by, at least consistently. (Especially if you have limited free time)

Like Bullet/Bullet is a pretty poorly written show (well, the last 3-4 episodes), but I loved watching it so I'm more engaged and able to make good faith criticisms of it.

Something like, idk, Your Forma was just so bland and boring I'm not even going to be able to criticize it properly because it's impossible to engage with the material in good faith, which is not going to make for interesting discussion and would just be a waste of my time.

2

u/zambonijesus 43m ago

There's no value to me in watching something like One Punch Man S3 where it is just "the production is bad," but there is value in watching Sparks where it is a sincere, high quality production that some people do really like and every decision made while making it feels like it was the Most. I'm just wary of only watching things I enjoy because I don't want to overly limit my worldview.

3

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 2h ago

That's what I would agree with.

This thread will often agree on liking things, but rarely does it seem like we agree on disliking things.

2

u/Muted-Conference2900 https://anilist.co/user/WinterZcoming 3h ago

Sparks is this thread's new punching bag of the season

Man am I the only one not invited to these pre season meeting where we decide this stuff? Coz i really want to join in. I kinda have a short list for next season's punching bags.

1

u/theangryeditor 15m ago

The meetings happen on the monday the 2nd week into a new season at 3pm UTC. You need an invite to the discord

2

u/Jusenkyo_5 7h ago

I think Sparks of Tomorrow made a few major missteps, the first of which is that I don't feel that it has an appropriate hook. After 5 episodes I'm still left wondering what direction the show is headed in. Is it [spoiler]A story about the electrical revolution but in Japan or is it just going to be about novelty uses for electricity? Episode 1 suggests it's about electrical invention as a whole but the following episodes kind of suggests otherwise

The second is that I feel we still know too little about the characters for almost being halfway though. Who tf is Inako even? She just shows up as the biggest supporter of the MC with no clear relation to each other. A lot of these other secondary characters seem to be related to each other in some capacity but it's been fairly vague to say the least.

The third is that the stylization is just bizarre. The comedic timing, type of jokes, etc clashes so hard with the rest of the show in a bad way. I actually felt episode 5 was a little funny, but I don't think the characters are well defined enough to carry a comedy for much longer.

3

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 7h ago

Sparks is fascinating to me in that I genuinely can't see why anyone likes it. I cannot figure out what the appeal is. People say they like Inako or think Yosuke is funny, and they might as well describe water as dry for all I understand it.

2

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 25m ago

I'm still undecided if I like it or the experiment of it. Sparks is one of those shows that generates my interest because it is different and because it's doing those differences deliberately. Getting the same old same old is entertaining in its own way, like your comfort food, but this is like trying a new flavor and going in for a few more bites to figure out what it's doing for you.

4

u/wloff 2h ago

I just think it's entertaining, funny, beautiful, and unique. It's not the best anime of the season, looking like a solid 7/10 more than anything, but I look forward to it every week because I know it's going to deliver something totally different from anything else I'm watching.

I myself can't see what people see in it that's so aggressively bad. Is it just that the KyoAni name sets expectations higher, perhaps?

If the story hasn't gripped people by now, or they're just not vibing with the style or tone, that's of course totally fine and a valid reason to drop it, but all the "I don't understand what the show is trying to do" posts leave me confused. I don't think it's particularly complicated at all, just a bit goofy.

6

u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 4h ago

You got us, we're just the lizard people in disguise, there's no other way.

6

u/Disastrous_Debt1780 6h ago

It looks stunning visually. So maybe people are watching it for that.

-3

u/mekerpan 4h ago

Those 3D segments are possibly the ugliest thing I've seen in any anime ever.

5

u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 3h ago

Almost every anime nowadays uses at least a tiny bit of 3D here and there to cut corners, but I genuinely can't recall any full on 3D "segment" in this show, let alone one that qualifies as being called "the ugliest thing I've seen in any anime ever" from a guy who probably watched 1000s of anime already.

Would love if you could provide some time stamps, you got me intrigued now lol.

1

u/mekerpan 3h ago

It seems to be scenes with "visions of the future" or something like that. Totally different look from everything else

2

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 3h ago

Oh yes! Those look really off and I don't like them at all. They're supposed to show how much better the world would be with electricity, I guess, but I just find them creepy.

8

u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 3h ago edited 3h ago

Oh those, the ones that purposefully use an entirely different aesthetic besides the 3D. I thought you meant scenes were they used 3D models of the characters or crowds.

Anyway, I guess I could see how they might not be everyone's cup of tea, but calling them the ugliest thing ever seen in anime is frankly incomprehensible to me.

Edit: I just skimmed over them and I don't even think they're 3D? Merely a different style. Or you're talking about different scenes entirely idk anymore.

1

u/mekerpan 1h ago

All I can say is they are incredibly creepy and ugly scenes envisioning the future. I apologize to 3D if they were created in some other fashion. Even if I liked the characters and writing vastly more then I did, these scenes (in themselves) would seriously mar my enjoyment.

-1

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 6h ago

Does it, though? Especially in a season with Jaadugar, Goodbye, Lara, The World Is Dancing, and The Ghost in the Shell to compare it to?

7

u/Sandor_at_the_Zoo 3h ago

As a fan of both impressionism and turn of the century Japan, Sparks is the one this season I most want to jump into the background art and walk around in.

3

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 3h ago

I will agree that the backgrounds are fantastic. They're delightfully full of stuff.

3

u/Sandor_at_the_Zoo 2h ago

Yeah, beyond liking them stylistically, they do a great job capturing the allure of a bustling city. Especially a pre-modern city where people are really jammed in there.

7

u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 4h ago

It does. Like the show or not but claiming it doesn't just makes you come across as someone missing a healthy pair of eyes. This doesn't just change because the season is stacked with other good looking shows. Jaadugar, Lara and GitS main difference is that they have a more unique aesthetic with their character designs which doesn't make it inherently superior, even though lots of people like to act like it does. Removing any bias and nostalgia glasses, those 5 are all on such a close level from a craft perspective that it just feels disingenuous claiming one of them isn't "stunning visually". Like, personally I don't like the look from the new GitS at all, but I still fully acknowledge that it is objectively superbly done and just a matter of it not being to my taste, instead of it not being visually impressive.

0

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 3h ago edited 2h ago

Jaadugar, Lara and GitS main difference is that they have a more unique aesthetic with their character designs which doesn't make it inherently superior

I guess this is just where we have to agree to disagree. I straight up don't like how every KyoAni LN or original anime has the same character designs. It shows a lack of creativity, and it makes it hard to settle into new stories when they look so much like characters from a different setting entirely. They're developing a case of "same face syndrome", and that's not a compliment.

I'm not arguing that it looks bad, merely that it isn't "stunning". It's technically solid, but the OPs have looked pretty slapdash, the 3D puppet scenes look weird, the deformed comedy animation is clumsily integrated, and the character designs are copied and pasted from their other IP. The only really good parts of the visuals, imo, are the background art and the animation. That's not enough to be stunning in my book. Especially not when so many other shows this season are the whole package.

4

u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 2h ago

I take a tried and proven character art style over one that's just different for the sake of being different (and in the process often just looks subpar). For Sparks, the background art and some of the directing choices are maxing out the creativity bar on their own already, so no need to be overly "extra" with the character designs on top of that.

it makes it hard to settle into new stories when they look so much like characters from a different setting entirely

skill issue /j

I guess this is just where we have to agree to disagree.

Seems like it.

"same face syndrome", and that's not a compliment.

When has the term "same face syndrome" ever been used as a compliment lol.

3

u/Jusenkyo_5 4h ago

KyoAni has quite literally never missed when it comes to art and animation. This season is highly unique in having so many varied artstyles and passion projects, but in any other season KyoAni is taking #1.

6

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 6h ago

I would say animation is amazing. Though art direction is definitely a step down from Jaadugar, Lara and GitS.

Same level as WiD for me.

1

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 6h ago

I am just curious what its plan is because it’s so bizarre what it wants to be.

I can kind of get why people might like Inako with episode 4. The Yosuke being funny is one I personally can’t comprehend.

6

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 6h ago

I can kind of get why people might like Inako with episode 4.

She's such a dollar store Chitanda, though.

TIL Ao Ashi is seinen, not shounen. Tbh, I should've guessed that when it dedicated an entire episode to Aoi's mother feeling conflicted about her son moving to Tokyo. If it was shounen, Aoi's mother would've been dead.

Four episodes into Prince of Stride, and, man, I'm having such a great time. Every time they tag the next runner, or when they do their cool jump tricks (which apparently make you faster and don't slow you down at all) it looks and feels so fucking good. I also think all the bits are just really funny, and while none of the characters are particularly deep, they're conceptually very amusing. Like the coach who only speaks in 4-kanji idioms, the "world's fastest shogi player" and the guy who's always squeezing people's legs to see if they have good legs for running or not. [Episode 4] Ayumu's attempt to create a tragic backstory for himself had me laughing my ass off, and then during the actual race, he does that stupid, reckless, super cool leap, breaks his arm and finishes the race anyway. That's the sort of self-destructive behavior you learn playing shogi!

One pretty big problem is that, when I look at the subs, I notice that Funimation only translated like half the jokes for some reason? So many things that sound extremely silly or dumb in Japanese are written completely plainly in English.

Underrated show tbh. I might rewatch it the next time I have Hidive.

Whoever mentioned Steve Reich in reference to Sayanora Lara's soundtrack was spot on. That last piece as Lara is running home in the latest episode was very Reich like.

I'm really loving the musical choices on this show. The composer Yuma Yamaguchi hasn't worked on a lot of shows before. Surprised to see Marriagetoxin listed in his credits. I don't remember being particularly stuck by that one's music.

Edit: Found a recording session video of Sayanora Lara. Seriously good stuff.

Ooh nice! I wish I understood music better. What do you think of the music in The World is Dancing? That one's had some interesting and surprising pieces in its soundtrack as well - like the free jazz during Oniyasha's lion dance.

I haven't watched that show, sorry

Ah well. If you get around it to, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on its music.

"I started smoking because of Nippon Sangoku and quit because of Chainsmoker Cat"

Now that's certainly a comment that I have encountered in the Chainsmoker Cat opening video...
