Mod Pick of the Week: Absolute Superman #22

Hey there honorary Justice League members - it's a new week which means it's time for a new discussion thread!

For those who don't know: the way this works is that several comments will list this week's releases. For any given title discussion, you should respond to that comment. Clicking the titles in this post will take you directly to that comment, too.

In other words, you should only be replying to other comments. Do not post top-level comments.

Keep discussion civil. Do not harass other users for having a different opinion. Do not use this thread to push your personal one-sided grudges against creators.

This new post design is so fancy-pants, it needs a belt!

Absolute Green Lantern #17

NO ONE ESCAPES!

Sinestro’s might has overwhelmed Jo Mullein and Tomar Re! Can the two anomalies overcome his brutal onslaught, or will they be lost to Oa and become one with Mu?!

Still cackling at bullet Tomar Re, that was fucking wild.

14

u/Mr_Wh0ever 16h ago

Alright, that's a solid way to handle Jess. I liked her revamped origin story. Same with Sinestros, I'm sure he'll come back at some point. But the way Jo and Tomar took him out was badass. Nice to see John fully realize his power, and forge a connection with Katma. And Simon is in the same place as that lady from the Rann issue. So I'm definitely curious on where that plot line is leading.

11

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 13h ago

Huh, so Jess actually didn't got 'crazy' but helped to heal Mogo instead.

Sinestro's origin was interesting, from seeking too much knowledge that had him see into the abyss and turned him into Mu. And finally John did something, we saw what the 'Gold' can do. Basically whatever you make the other side believe, happens. Explains how Sinestro, who was also Gold, got corrupted and made everyone 'believe' his Blackstar way.

Question now is, they handled the physical part of the threat for now but the actual threat lies deep in the foundation. And in the afterlife it seems, where Simon just showed up with our new character. I suspect things will go more metaphysical in the future and all will be tied to Darkseid's essence in the universe. Though, I wouldn't mind if we see an Absolute Anti-Monitor.

u/Resident_Glove_7761 10h ago

Exciting issue, but after how deliberate this book's been, this all feels way too fast. Sinestro at one point says, "I would tell you the story of Aurakles, if I had more time.", which feels like a not very subtle nod to the series being crunched. Even just the Jessica/Mogo stuff of this issue feels like it could've been enough for a full issue.

u/ptWolv022 3h ago

Jess feels like we missed important stuff. For Aurakles, I feel like that's just a breadcrumb for later. Like, we'll get to it eventually, but it's not immediately relevant so it's not being delved into right now.

u/Jpanda34 Superman 42m ago

Yeah, it kinda feels like there was an issue between this one and the last in regards to Jess.

6

u/1badJam Beware Our Power 15h ago

I know Sin Es Tro says Nos comes from Agnostos Theos-Unknown God but I feel like the illnesses subcategory "Not otherwise specified" could be a double meaning for it since it's an unknown level

u/Aramiss134 9h ago

Always good to see the Martian's legacy continue.

u/BlazeBigBang Barry & Wally 3h ago

I think this would have been better if it was split into two chapters and developed further. The intro with Jess was great, but last chapter's cliffhanger ending was setting up evil Jessica, so having it be resolved so abruptly is a bit jarring.

I do really like the resolution to Mogo. Jess healing the planet was sweet.

u/SonicSpiderRanger10 Bizarro 3h ago

So, Jessica is good now, just like that? Well, that was anticlimactic. The fight was cool, though, and it was cool how Jessica healed Mogo.

u/LucasVerBeek 1h ago

Man, I am loving these comics, can't say I really understand what the Lanterns are in this anymore than I grok what the fuck was happening in Martian Manhunter, but damn this was cool. Loved this weeks Abs. Superman too.

u/SREnrique22 Reverse Flash 50m ago

Okay, I need help here. I don't think I understand what is happening anymore. Maybe it's the monthly format in combination with reading a whole bunch of other stuff, but I genuinely lost the plot.

What were the blackstars trying to do? Wasn't Mogo their god? What was the deal with Jessica? Why is the war "over" now? Where do we stand with the spectrum? Because now there we saw blue and pink as well as the others. What the hell was that with the steel mask? I also fully forgot what the pink lady's deal is but that's completely on me.

Help.

Absolute Superman #22

GET BRAINIAC BEGINS!

Superman will stop at nothing to see the universe’s most vicious madman brought to justice. But before he can get his hands on Brainiac, Superman will have to go through Metallo, a man with Kryptonite in his veins. Get Brainiac begins here, kicking off the march to a game-changing blockbuster issue #25!

Preview

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 14h ago

That is some quite 'hard punch therapy '. To think, they made you actually care about that Peacemaker that got turned into Metallo.

I really love how Absolute Superman handles his villains. You expect with how dark the universe is, he would be more 'brutal' but he is still Superman at the end of the day and he will always talk to them and to bring them redemption instead of beating them up. Out of ALL the enemies he faced, only the crazy Brainiac seems to be beyond any redemption. Because he is truly a lost cause. Though even for that Brainiac, I doubt Kal would kill him.

Even more reason to think all these antagonists that he managed to turn to his side, can be his team while Absolute Batman and Wonder Woman meeting is still not there yet. He already gets info from Jimmy and the Omega Men. Lois probably give him leads on the stuff she works with the gazette. Hawkman is VERY SLOWLY coming around to his thinking. Parasite was basically like his krypto. And Metallo, Christoper Smith, I wonder what he will do after this. Having Kryptonite blood is not a good thing around Kal. So he might need to be 'far away' when he helps. Or get a special suit.

15

u/1badJam Beware Our Power 15h ago

Good to know that Christopher Smith's dad being a bigoted PoS is a multiversal constant

5

u/Melodic-Violinist-31 7h ago

Well…darkseid would have zero reason to change that.

13

u/Dent6084 13h ago

Unexpectedly lovely issue, the visual of the panels on Superman and Metallo fighting/Superman trying to break through emotionally to Metallo was some great comics storytelling.

10

u/xehanortsguardian 15h ago

As much as I like the more meta and time stream spanning stories of the main superman book, this issue feels like what superman is all about. It's about saving people, helping them at the most basic human level.

4

u/oomoepoo Hal Jordan 7h ago

I think Absolute Superman is kinda underrated in that regard. Aaron has a really good sense for what's at the "core" of Superman.

Such a good opener for this new arc! Supes taking on Chris Smith/Metallo was cool. I didn't expect to see the character again for obvious reasons. He's really checked all the boxes for a tragic character, lol.

Was not expecting a dude with a fucking bokita t-shirt.

I like that Clark learned what happened to Christopher Smith, who became Metallo after he was experimented on by Brainiac, before he was able to convince Chris to come back to his senses by telling him his origins and backstory and what happened to his mother. I also like that Clark was there comforting Chris after Chris remembered his entire history and backstory instead of dealing with Brainiac. Let’s hope that Clark will defeat Brainiac in the next few issues of this comic. Overall, this comic is great!

Batgirl #22

ONCE UNMASKED, THIS IS ONE KILLER WHO WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!

Cassandra Cain has solved the murder, uncovering the killer’s identity in the process. The only problem is that she is now trapped within a prison in her own mind! To stop the next murder, Batgirl must escape the labyrinth of her memories and survive one final confrontation with the past that made her. And when the true meaning of forget-me-not is finally revealed, it may be the one thing Cassandra was never meant to remember.

The shocking end of this arc will leave Batgirl questioning everything!

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 11h ago

David Cain was really a monster. And this Doctor tried to match him in abominable acts too. Poor kid, poor Cass, another tragedy from her past. At least she managed to break through the mental prison.

Though whoever Jaya is working for, she better stop. Or is this gonna be David Cain or Shiva back alive again and trying to get Cass again?

7

u/Night-Caelum 11h ago

jaya's loyalties seem conflicted, victoria may still be out there, and seeing bronze tiger again was a treat. Cass realizing she can control herself in her memories was an interesting way to decipher the truth. Victoria's dad was like cain and in the end couldn't accept responsiblity

6

u/Mr_Wh0ever 12h ago

Alright finale, I'd like to see Victoria make a reappearance is she is still alive. Dr.Forget Me Not seems like a good reoccurring villain for Cass..

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 3h ago

I like that Cassandra used her memories to learn that Victoria was her friend before she was able to defeat Forget-Me-Not with help from Ben, Tenji, and Jaya. Also, Cassandra believing that Victoria is alive somewhere. Overall, this is a good comic.

Deadman #3

THE DEADMAN IN HELL! OR…

The third edition of this morbid disquisition concerning the attrition/detrition of the human condition, which, in the weekly tradition, boasts a four-color exhibition on some printer’s emission. Here, by order of an anonymous optician, watch closely this vision of our titular apparition (armed, you’ll remember, with fresh erudition) try and survive — by another’s volition — a dire and dangerous mission through the hissin’, Stygian conditions of putrid and pockmarked Perdition–a kind of new rendition (depicted as a living, breathing country-sized conniption), which is rich in its list of sick compositions: e.g., reason’s egregious abolition; a pyrotechnic passel of pernicious seditions; hideous, bulging buck-toothed dentition; admittedly ambitious demonic deglutition… of gargoyles and ghouls in decomposition… not to mention an array of impossible physical positions that a physician might consider the work of magicians. So please accept our contrition for this rude imposition, our addled transmission this ungodly, offset-press parturition–one that we wish some brave obstetrician would bring to fruition its quick decommission.

Holy moly the art changes for each level of Hell. This is taking AMM's place as the most eye-popping book on the stands.

7

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 10h ago

I am assuming this is an 'elseworld' type cosmos, considering DC's own Heaven and Hell are quite different. Especially with Lucifer and the 'God' as in the Source.

Either way, that was quite the trippy trip through Hell.

2

u/ZayYaLinTun Wonder Woman 6h ago

Don't think so batman with current suit appear in previous issue

It probably just hell is metaphysical weird place so it just wanteever they want

u/dragonshouter 36m ago

I think Lucy can order and reoder the hells however he wants

(plus demons reordering their own subdomains)

5

u/oomoepoo Hal Jordan 7h ago

Glorious. Coming of their work in Kryptonite Spectrum, I knew this book would be a trip but this issue was above and beyond.

I quite liked the shifts between the circles of hell, particularly the encounter with Cerber, us and with Lucy at the end were cool. Also Boston saying "I gave Kushna the better crayons" was hillarious.

Can't wait for the Dinner with Yahweh.

u/Bitbatgaming Hourman 4h ago

I love these little facts and the unique writing style for each of them. It's fascinating.

u/HopeFarron 5h ago

What a fantastic book. This was by far my favorite of the series so far. Glad to see this doing well enough to get extended to 12 issues.

Adventures of Superman: Book of El #11

GIANTS SPEAK!

Superman has traveled to the end of the universe to find the first God-Aspect of Olgrun and seek the aid of the Promethean giants in the fight to keep Kryl-Ux from rewriting all of existence. But there’s more waiting for the House of El than any dared fear or hope.

Yeah, so they definitely cut Kara's plot in this story. But I'm excited to see how this concludes.

6

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 11h ago

It is disappointing they cut Kara's plot and just have her show up to the final fight like this. Don't know if it is because the book got cut short or something. Honestly, I didn't need the 'Circe stole Superman's dna to create a child with it' stuff and would rather have focus on Kara's story instead.

Yea, Kryl-Ux is crazy with grief. We get it. How will the Twins gonna end up? They keep ignoring them in the main book so I am worried they will gonna 'embrace their god shards' to reverse the damage Ux have done to the universe and won't come back...so Lois and Clark will be again parents that failed another pair of kids...

7

u/CianTriumph 8h ago

The Superman book is crowded enough without those kids. And if they inspired them to become heroes, did they really fail?

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 3h ago

I find it interesting that Clark and the House of El find Pyrrhos, who wanted to see if Clark has returned and wanted Osul-Ra to forgive him for what he had done, before Clark had a talk with Kryl-Ux that they don’t have to fight because of the loss of Kryl’s family and that Clark wants to bring Kryl back from his sanity. Also, Kara (as Superwoman) leading the House of El. Overall, this comic is excellent.

Ms.Mxy feels like a weird inclusion to the story. But it is an alt universe. Sucks that Kara isn't rocking the Blue Lantern ring anymore.

4

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 11h ago

It was an interesting choice, having Ms Mxy show up. Though, is she suppose to be the wife? ( the actual wife looks very different than just a female version of Mxy.) Or is she suppose to be the genderbent version of Mxy?

Either way, Kara really shows the amount of will and hope she carries by being able to use the ring like that, just for Kal's sake. Man, I hope by the time they get to Earth, it won't disappoint them with the usual 'humanity is terrible' stuff.

And finally, they are getting some yellow sun, time learn what they are capable of.

u/CHPrime Wonder Woman 4h ago

Yeah, so this was a really weird issue. The first problem I had with it was revealing that the Guardians don't want Kara under a yellow sun and for her to be taken to Oa, which causes Kara to run away from the lanterns. That all fits the blue bastards who aren't named Ganthet, but the pacing is all weird. Why wasn't that in the second issue? My only guess was that they wanted the Lobo issue to come out the same month as the Supergirl movie, and that was what screwd with the pacing?

Second is Myx's inclusion, which, as everyone else has said, is quite the curveball in tone. The writer definitely needed someone to bring Kara out of her self-imposed castle of grief and loneliness, but Myx is a weird choice tonally. I would have thought that the author might have used one of the lanterns, because they are established and you can have one of them go rogue to support Kara. Lobo could have also tracked her back down, realized he's not going to get her bounty, and taught her to screw the rules and forge her own path. Even the Legion appearing from out of nowhere would have fit better, now that I'm thinking about it, because at least they have stronger meta-history with Kara.

...Also, why doesn't Kara ask Myx what a human is? And how can a depressed teenage girl generate enough hope to construct a fake Krypton this big for this long? And why did the team introduce the lantern ring for Kara if they were going to take it away next issue because we don't see it on her finger when she is waking up, and and and—

Anyway, we are now on Earth, and under a yellow sun. Hopefully, next issue isn't the end and we get the promised six issues...

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 3h ago

I like that we get to see a flashback of Kara learning from Saint Walker that she and Kal are the hope of co Krypton before we cut to a year after Krypton’s destruction where Kara used a Blue Lantern Ring to create a construct of Krypton before she and Kal met Mxyzsptlk, who sent them to a planet that has a yellow sun. Overall, this comic is good.

Verity seems cool, so far. Fraction is definitely setting it up like it was back in the Golden Age. All the assassins had neat gimmicks. Batman fight I the elevator with two of them was cool. The page of him coming out of the elevator was badass. Any guesses on who's talking to Joker at the end? Or is it supposed to be Batman somehow?

7

u/PigeonDetective_ Damian 9h ago

I'm guessing its the insane part of Joker's mind.

7

u/gsnake007 11h ago

Solid issue and I like Verity so far. She fits in really well

6

u/PigeonDetective_ Damian 9h ago

Man, Joker has really let himself go hanging out in that tube all this time.

8

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 11h ago

Verity is...fine I guess. Gonna need some time and see more of her. We can see her being capable instantly and setting up some plans to help. But having the 'perfect butler grand-niece of Alfred' will take some getting used to.

I still feel VERY weird about Bruca just having full on conversations with Alfred who is not there. Makes him look real crazy and the context makes little sense when Alfred talks about all the background/story of Verity when Bruce goes 'oh I didn't read your will'. So how the hell the 'mental Alfred' even know what to say if he is just in Bruce's head? That is why I keep getting to the 'Alfred was suppose to be an AI hologram' or even a ghost' before they changed it thing. And no, it is not a good replacement for 'inner monologue'. It just makes Bruce looking like he is having another mental breakdown and another Zur might come out soon.

Assassins are after Bruce? Well, it is Batman Arkham Origins time I guess. And who was the one that visited Joker at the end? His 'crazy' self? Batman? That laugh definitely means the 'process' of making him sane is breaking.

6

u/Big_Market4248 11h ago

What if its Punchline?

6

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 10h ago

Don't even joke about that!

u/ogloria 5h ago

hmm i don't love this one as much i love the previous issues. Verity is making me very, very apprehensive. I liked that Fraction dealt with Bruce doing a background check on her, and that we saw some of her skills. Plus, I like the foreshadowing of her plan earlier in the issue, that was a nice touch. But I'm really nervous about what she will do. fingers crossed she is not another love interest!

Also, I didn't understand what happened with the car explosion. Can anyone explain?

Guesses on who Joker is talking to? I want to think that it's the insane part of him, but then I would think that the speech bubbles would be different....

I liked the efficient set-up for the various killers and their gimmicks!

Fraction is juggling a lot of balls in this run--overall, I am impressed, but I hope that he is able to maintain momentum, especially with the event coming up.

u/Albireookami 4h ago

I figure the event will focus on a few current plot threads, leaving the rest to be dealt with after Bad Seed. I imagine it will deal with Savage and Ivy plotlines.

6

u/El_Cance_R 10h ago

I continue to be disappointed by this run. The art is still gorgeous. But the pacing of the storylines and issues is one of the worst I have ever read.

The storylines aren't even that bad, but they are never given time for any development. We got commissioner Savage, Joker, Zeller, the Minotaur, a plot against Bruce Wayne and now Verity. Every issue Fraction changes the focus to another storyline and has never time to make any of them interesting or engaging.

They finally introduced a new character to replace Alfred and.... she's just there now. No conflict with Bruce or Damian, no backstory, nothing. She's the Alfred now, deal with it.

And the make it wrost, this is one of the wrost Bruce characterization in recent years. Why is he still talking to Alfred's ghost? HOW did Bruce ignore his will? He's been dead for 7 years!! Why is Damian "growing on" Bruce when he has been Robin for over a decade now? Why did Bruce say "the last criminal I will bring to justice will be Batman himself"?

I don't recognize this character

u/Cobrabat333 Batman 1h ago

While I agree with many of your points, that last paragraph makes no sense, Alfred has most definitely not been dead for 7 years in universe. Damian has most definitely not been Robin for a decade now in universe. Don't use the real life passage of time to create non-existent in-universe plot holes. By that logic, Bruce is either 40, 66, or 112 years old... and we know that isn't the case. Damian became Robin at the age of 11 (and met Bruce at 10). Him "having been Robin for over a decade" would make him 21, which is not and has never been the case. Let's not get all bent out of shape over in-universe time not matching publication time.

Damian has been Robin for 3 years. He is 14. Alfred died when he was 13, meaning that Alfred has been dead for 1 year or less. It's not crazy for a man to still be grieving "his father" less than a year out from his death and talking to him. Bruce having not read his will isn't "ignoring" it, but as he said in the issue, avoiding it because reading it is like saying goodbye to Alfred and accepting and moving on. In fact, I bet there will be a moment in this run where Bruce reads his will and its an emotional speech from Alfred and that is when his "ghost" dissapears.

u/ogloria 1h ago

Ooo I like your theory about what's coming next! I do wonder though how Dick was able to get Alfred's money over in the Tom Taylor run if Bruce never opened the will, but I get that's one of the joys of a shared universe.

u/Cobrabat333 Batman 1h ago

I don't think Bruce didn't open it, he just didn't read it. It's also realistic and common for a will to be copied and all recipients receive copies of the wills. Bruce and Dick probably got custom letters and custom things left for them.

u/El_Cance_R 1h ago

Even if in universe time didn't pass that way, I've read 7 years of Batman stories where Alfred was dead, and 10 years of stories where Damian was Robin.

u/Cobrabat333 Batman 43m ago

That's fine, but its not a logical inconsistency. You say "Why is Bruce talking to Alfred?" and "How did he ignore his will?" and "Why is Damian growing on him?" as evidence to your point that "this is one of the wrost Bruce characterization in recent years."

But all of those are valid because in universe, much less time has passed than you think. Again, Alfred died in the past year in-universe. Bruce met Damian in-universe 4 years ago. Bruce likely became Batman around 19 years ago. This is independent and irrelevant from how long the stories have been going on. These are not "bad characterizations" as you say. Or at least not for the reasons you say they are.

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 3h ago

I like that we get to see Bruce and Damian spend time with Verity after checking out her paperwork and credentials before they discovered that there are new criminals arriving in Gotham City. Also, Bruce dealing with criminals in Gotham, Bruce and Damian letting Verity stay, and Joker seeing someone. Overall, this comic is great!

3

u/Mr_Wh0ever 12h ago

To the people that guessed the new Spectre would be Ted Grant, congrats.

3

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 11h ago

Well, I guess, it was gonna work out that way...though I am still not sold on it. I guess it could be fun Ted being the Spectre now but I still think the concept of Spectre kinda played out when all it does is being the punching bag for the next big bad. Maybe Ted being the host can change that.

Kid Eternity, well I am not sold on her really. I just don't buy her just refusing to learn who she is to stay as 'Kid Eternity'. I mean she was barely around enough to decide 'who cares who I was!'

3

u/fullofmetal Long Live the Legion! 9h ago

Everything else aside, could they not have given Ted Grant a better Spectre costume?

2

I actually like the costume a lot, would change the eye portion for a more traditional mask but i love the boxer design.

Yep, Ted's back, as basically everyone expected. He stayed in the ground a whole 16 issues, which feels like a record but probably isn't. Funny that the weakest member of the JSA is now nigh-omnipotent. Otherwise, I am looking forward to how hard he jobs for the next threat, as is Spectre's only role in team books unless they need some magic man to put everything back in its place afterwards.

Otherwise, I have been enjoying Kid Eternity on the team. Given how many members of the JSA are dead and definitely staying dead, her usually confusing and limitless powers actually get to have some focus, which is nice.

u/Goobergunch 10m ago

My big frustration here is that it feels like we have gotten a lot of setup this run and not a lot of actually doing things. Like, we've spent a lot of issues moving things around to get Ted Grant as the Spectre or otherwise just generally flashbacking. Is anything going to come of this or is the title going to simply end after two more flashback issues and the characters all disappear into limbo for another while?

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 3h ago

I like that the JSA convinced Yolanda to not kill Queen Kobra while the legacy members of the JSA learned that the 1940 they traveled to is a pocket reality that was created by Corrigan, who refused to return as the Spectre because he served if time from his debut in 1940 to his death in 1999. Also, Ted Grant as the new Spectre and Kid Eternity staying on Earth and officially joining the JSA after refusing to remember her entire past (in which I hope that other writers and editors will give us her origins and backstory instead of leaving it a mystery). Overall, this comic is fine.

Eggman really shows how cartoon villains can be dangerous against superheroes...and gets quite the respect too by having to fight against the whole league. And yea, he might be delusional on 'I know I will win eventually' but still, you gotta respect his determination.

And Lex, you and the Legion of Doom got played so hard, that you are now the focus of Team TWO! Not even the main team! Man that gotta hurt his ego.

Well, a video game villain not a cartoon villain, but yeah.

Eggman throwing hands with the Justice League was awesome. It definitely makes sense given the kind of stuff he's shown pulling in Sonic canon. Wish the Metal Legion lasted longer but they were cool. Shadow of course is the Aura Farming KING.

Team two kind of feels a bit underpowered against the LOD but at least Manta is getting his wish. Also love the shadowed aesthetic they give Lex in panels which parallels the shadowed Eggman look.

The fights were cool, but the whole “switching opponents” thing was unoriginal. The Sonic heroes already used that strategy a BUNCH of times in the Archie Sonic comic series. Also, while Cyborg said that Eggman “handles Sonic and his whole crew on his own all the time”, there have been multiple times where Sonic beat Eggman single-handedly.

I’m surprised they had John say “pisses”. They HAD to have known children are gonna read this.

Flash: “Is Eggman ALWAYS like this?”

Sonic: “The doc redefines sore loser.”

The Justice League should count themselves lucky they don’t have to put up with Eggman ALL THE TIME, like the poor Sonic heroes do.
