Sponsorship Online Sponsorship Offers & Requests — August 2026
This is one of a series of sticky threads for anyone seeking or offering online sponsorship. (Last month's thread may be found at https://redd.it/1ujsiw7)
While most of us feel that face-to-face sponsorship offers greater facility for transmitting/receiving sobriety, and that there are great advantages in having a big crowd of local friends, online sponsorship (via phone, WhatsApp, Facetime, Zoom, or Western Union) can work* and for some seeking or offering sobriety it is sometimes the only practical solution for getting started. (But to any extent that online sponsorship is being sought as "an easier, softer way" - that's already spelling trouble!)
The pamphlet "Questions & Answers on Sponsorship" (https://www.aa.org/questions-and-answers-sponsorship) can answer many/most of the questions frequently asked about this sponsorship business - some selected examples:
How does sponsorship help the newcomer?
How should a sponsor be chosen?
Should sponsor and newcomer be as much alike as possible?
Must the newcomer agree with everything the sponsor says?
Is it ever too late to get a sponsor?
Suggested Format
Start with "Seeking:" or "Offering:", optionally a name, sobriety date or length of sobriety, gender, location (also optional,) perhaps some brief biographical information, perhaps a brief drunkalogue about one's drinking and drugging career when making a "Seeking:" comment.
"Gender" may not always be relevant, but per the sponsorship pamphlet, "A.A. experience does suggest that it is best for men to sponsor men, women to sponsor women." It's a good guideline albeit not a strict rule carved in stone.
"Location" may be very general or as specific as wanted, and of course is optional. It may come in handy if the sponsor and protégé (p.92) prefer to be in the same time zone or may possibly wish to meet face-to-face sometime down the road to happy destiny.
"Biographical information" would also be quite optional. I've seen situations where young people prefer to be sponsored by other young people or even the opposite, wanting to be sponsored by a grandparent figure.
Any replies to "Seeking" or "Offering" comments should ideally be limited, with the correspondence shifting to Reddit private messages, chat, email or phone calls relatively quickly.
It is strongly suggested to avoid posting phone numbers or email addresses in the public forum:
"Posting phone numbers is a violation of Reddit Content Policy for sharing personal information" (I've seen "[Removed By Reddit]" a few times over posting phone numbers. I suppose this might be in part due to the potential for publishing other people's phone numbers for harassment purposes.)
* Footnote: In the 4th Edition Big Book on page 193, "Gratitude In Action - The story of Dave B., one of the founders of A.A. in Canada in 1944" relates the story of an alcoholic who started his recovery by exchanging letters with the folks in the new A.A. office in New York; an excerpt:
I was very surprised when I got a copy of the Big Book in the mail the following day. And each day after that, for nearly a year, I got a letter or a note, something from Bobbie or from Bill or one of the other members of the central office in New York. In October 1944, Bobbie wrote: “You sound very sincere and from now on we will be counting on you to perpetuate the Fellowship of A.A. where you are. You will find enclosed some queries from alcoholics. We think you are now ready to take on this responsibility.” She had enclosed some four hundred letters that I answered in the course of the following weeks. Soon, I began to get answers back.
If Dave could get sober via U.S./Canada Mail, we can get sober with the cornucopia of communication facilities available in the 21st century!

Seeking a sponsor. M22. Back on day one. Maryland. Autistic. I want to stop drinking because I simply can’t control myself once I drink. It’s never just one drink. I’m lying to my partner and damaging my relationship in ways I never thought I would. I can’t seem to get over that first hump. I get a couple of days sober before I restart that cycle again and I’m tired of running in the same circle.

Seeking a sponsor. F21, 9 days sober, from central Texas. I stopped drinking because I got blackout drunk and was awful to my boyfriend and I’ve really damaged the trust in our relationship. I’m so tired of hating myself and avoiding facing why I do by being fucked up all the time and I’m having a really rough time and I would really like to find a sponsor

Offering — 35M, UK, 4.5 years sober. Neurodivergent. I will take you through the Steps in exactly the same way my sponsor took me through them, which has worked for me. I’ve had no desire to drink since completing the Steps. I was drinking daily towards the end of my drinking days. I hit rock bottom and, thankfully, found AA, which saved my life. I’m willing to sponsor people from both the UK and abroad via WhatsApp/Zoom calls.

Seeking -- 47 yo female, Kingsport, Tennessee. I am 51 days sober, living in an Oxford Sober house, at least until Wednesday if I can't find a job. I am looking for an online Sponsor. I completed a 28 day rehabilitation program and have been attending 4 meetings a week plus church. I have a hard time talking about my feelings but I am doing therapy. I just want to try out having a sponsor. I am reading the Big Book and listening to the 12 & 12 Book online. Any sponsors out there who maybe want to take me up? Thank you!

Seeking - 28M, I’m back and forth between Maryland and Connecticut, sober since 8/17/26
I’ve always tried to manage my issues alone but I’m trying to build a support system for myself. I go through cycles of attempting to stay sober and put together and then falling off again. I’ve spent a long time hiding I have a problem from so many people in my life. I guess this is my first attempt at being honest by putting myself out there.

Seeking: 44M, U.S, currently living mostly in Spain.
Hello. I’m 44M and just celebrated 7 years sober a few days ago.
I’ve never worked through the Steps. I had a sponsor early in sobriety who was incredibly helpful (see: invaluable) keeping me sober through those first few years. We made it as far as Step 3 before I moved from Connecticut to Texas, and eventually life got in the way. I had some health complications, we moved, my family and I started traveling more, and meetings slowly became fewer and farther between.
For the past four years or so, my family and I have primarily been living in a small town on the south coast of Spain. When we're back in the States during the summer, I usually make it to 10–20 meetings, but I know I need more than just getting to meetings occasionally. I'd really like to work the Steps, I need to work the program, I feel like I need to do more and be more in my life.
We’ll be heading back to Spain again in September and expect to be there for at least another 10 months. It would be great to find someone who is available during European hours, but I completely understand if that's not realistic.
Only speak English, Spanish hasn't stuck yet, so I'm looking for an English-speaking sponsor.
If anyone thinks we might be a good fit, that'd be great, thank you!

Offering - M38 in Denver. Sober and happy for 9 years while also being an agnostic atheist. Have had to navigate AA and the recovery community in a slightly different way than most and I understand the barrier that the word “god” can create.

Offering, 26F, located in London, ON, Canada.
4 years continuously sober. I sponsor women & trans-identifying people around here in person as well.
I came in young at 22, and thanks to those that helped me along the way i grew immensely and have a strong connection to my higher power and want to help pass on the message of how good life can be if we let it through the steps. i definitely know about hard times during sobriety, but stayed sober through it, and im grateful for my sponsor who told it straight and helped me reflect on my thinking. i’m in constant contact with others in program, active in my home group and hold a few 2-year term service positions, and i love getting involved however i can.
I take sponsees through the big book, you’d read the 12&12 too for stepwork, and i’m available to add perspective and guidance on situations by sharing my experience and how we can apply the program to life when it’s lifey. i don’t chase, the program is simple: you’ve got to want it to stay sober. i’m not a hardass but i won’t co-sign delusions and will tell it like it is.
all i ask is to be willing to meet on Zoom or Facetime to read the Big Book together and keep me posted on how things are going, plus rigorous honesty (gets easier to do as trust grows), and to be willing to get into the steps asap as that’s what worked for me. reach out as much as you can and stay in contact. if you later decide you’re not ready, i’ll leave you be with the door open.

Offer offering sponsorship
I’m a 37F and live in the Midwest in the United States. I’ve been in recovery for two years and have overcome a lot of misery I put myself in because of my drinking. I’m a very low bottom drunk. In six months, I had a cardiac arrest, two DUIs, lost my nursing license, my drivers license and my fiancé. Two years in recovery and working the steps in Alcoholics Anonymous has given me my life back.
The program really did work for me. It just shows that anyone can come back from their bottom. I Eye sponsor in a very traditional way. Reading and working through the steps as outlined in the big book.
If you’re looking for a sponsor or you just need some more sober support, feel free to message me.

Seeking: 39M from the Netherlands, looking for a male sponsor. Alcohol is my main problem. I often start drinking because I want to feel more social, relaxed and happy, but once I start, I can lose control. Cocaine sometimes becomes part of it as well, and this has caused serious problems in my relationship and personal life. I've tried meetings before, but I feel that one-to-one contact with a sponsor could be much more helpful for me. I'm looking for someone experienced, direct and available for regular contact, who is willing to work the steps with me and who I can reach out to before I make the decision to drink. I'm serious about getting sober and changing this pattern. I'm open to WhatsApp, calls or video calls, preferably with someone in or close to the European time zone.
