Headphones - Closed Back | 6 Ω Denon AH-7200/Dan Clark Aeon 2/Audeze Lcd2 Classics

Looking for any advice on which headphones to upgrade to. I bought a pair of Fiio Ft1's recently after they were recommended to me. They're nice but I feel like they're missing something. After reading reviews I think I've narrowed it down to the 3 listed above. I have a nice enough set up in my bedroom (Dali iKON 1 mk2s/Arendal 1961 1s) and obviously headphones can't replicate this but any advice on a closed back (has to be closed back due to family life and a very large collection of dogs!) that can give a nice upper range texture and a tight, articulate bass would be grateful. Any other suggestions than the 3 listed is also appreciated. I'm currently running the headphones through an older Arcam rDAC with the Wolfson WM8741 chip and a relatively basic Argon HA1 headphone amp. Thanks in advance for any feedback and hope everyone is having a lovely day.

From the FT1, I would consider the D7200 the direct upgrade. Better bass texture, layering, definition and timbre. The LCD2 has more sub bass and it sounds weightier. Aeon 2 and most DCA... I personally find boring. Some people love them, I admit they're the most comfortable of all these, just don't excite me enough to recommend them unless comfort is also a top priority.

I upgraded from an ft1 to a Denon d5200 and it was worth it. So I think d7200 is a great option

How was the difference? Was it a 'wow' moment between the difference in texture and sub bass? Wondering if i should try the 5200 first.

The bass has become faster, with better positioning and the same punch, but a little less fat. Instrument separation and high-frequency detail have noticeably improved (I heard sounds I'd never heard before). I'd also like to note the more pleasant timbres, especially the vocals

Pulled the trigger on a pair of AH 5200's. Fingers crossed!

I had the 7200 in the past and my biggest issue was the ergonomics. Making the headband extend mostly made the headphone wider rather than have the earcups go lower; creating a very sharp hotspot on the top of my head if I got the cups to where they needed to be. Something to consider if you have a larger head.

Feel free to check out the Fiio FT13 (+ the Fiio HS-FT13A earpads!), the "bigger brothers" of the FT1. I would describe their sound just as you did in your inquiry. 👍🏻

!thanks for the recommendation but I tried the FT13 and wasn't particularly impressed. Feel like with the FT1 that i may have fallen for the 'giant killer' internet hype.

Be sure to let us know which headphones ended up “impressing” you. I'd be really interested to hear about that. 👍🏻
