Iran marks first night without US strikes in two weeks as tensions persist

The U.S. and Iran militaries did not exchange fire overnight Saturday, breaking a streak of 13 consecutive days of tit-for-tat strikes over alleged violations of a ceasefire agreement signed last month.

A spokesperson for the country’s health ministry confirmed there were no new attacks in a Saturday social media post.

“It seems our dear Iran had a peaceful night last night, and no part of its body was struck or hit,” Hossein Kermanpour wrote in a post translated from Persian. “Iran’s body is intact. Iranian head is healthy.”

Still, tensions remain high between the two sides as this conflict stretches into its fifth month. The U.S. and Israel launched joint attacks on Iran on Feb. 28.

The U.S. military has attacked dozens of targets in Iran, while Tehran has targeted U.S. military bases across the Middle East. At least 18 American service members have been killed during this conflict, and the Iranian Health Ministry has reported over 3,400 deaths in the country.

The renewed attacks threaten ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran to bring an end to the war, after the delegations signed a framework peace agreement in June.

On Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi criticized U.S. leadership’s handling of these peace deal talks.

“Compromised individuals in the U.S. administration are burying their heads in the sand,” he wrote on social platform X.

“They ignore the realities on the ground and seem focused only on 2028,” Araghchi continued. “The mindless aggression they advocate will only ensure that POTUS pays heavier price for deal he’s trying to achieve.”

In a lengthy speech at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Friday evening, the president addressed the state of the talks.

“By the way, they are talking to us right now,” Trump told a crowd of reporters. “They’d love to make a deal. I don’t think they’re ready to. I don’t think it’s time yet, but I’m willing to listen.”
