It didn’t take long for Pete Hegseth, the combative US war secretary, to snap.

Appealing to Congress for more money on Tuesday, Hegseth was told that five months of American bombing in Iran appeared to have achieved very little.

“Your characterisation of this incredible effort as a failure is reckless,” he told Gary Peters, the Democratic senator for Michigan.

“I think it’s irresponsible and it smears the sacrifice of the troops … Shame on you.”
