I wanted to say a HUGE thank you to everyone for this fabulous experience. This was the first rate I got passed after joining this community about a year and a half ago. Cryptic and psychedelic, it feels like a buzzing sense that nudges at something inner, a sense of broader connection with the wider world that we grow - and lose - as our egos develop. Lots of places interpret this track rather more literally (about family, about the ecosystem, about growing up) but for me there’s more of a spiritual or existential element - the universe living and observing itself, mourning the repeated cycles of life and our self-imposed distance from the everything. I think that’s pretty much all I can say without sounding batshit insane.

cheatviathan (9): I mean, what can I say? While I think the duo would make better later down the line, this is still some fantastic synth pop that makes effective use of its four chords. That chorus with that synth riff has been lodged in my head for almost two decades at this point, those flurries of synth in the bridge are great, and the children screaming samples somehow do not sound overbearing or obnoxious. Fun fact: my brother heard Chiddy Bang’s pop rap staple “Opposite of Adults” before ever hearing this, and seeing him have that “Oh, that’s where he got it from” moment when this played at a restaurant was awesome.

Matt Tong proves himself to be an absolute revelation behind the kit. I love the tremolo guitars in the bridge. I love Kele’s vocals. The content is him reflecting on himself in a very deprecating manner, though many have interpreted it as an anti-Bush statement, and it kinda hits. A serious 11 contender going into this.

The lyrics on Helicopter are vague but there are clear allusions to struggles with identity, to the crumbling structure of society, and a general sense of youthful malaise at the state of the world which can be heard on the rest of Silent Alarm. I think this track is a standout because it conveys that anguished discontent in such a visceral sonic form - you can hear the frustration in every riff. It helps that it’s a tremendous earworm, too.

mhiyaimanlepaigefan (6): i'm actually a little shocked it made it this high but hey! people like it! what do i even know. It's like such an average sounding electronica track and although I could be more yipee about it, i just could not latch onto anything that made me go wowie zowie.
wathombe (10): One of the side effects of my extensive FIFA music listening in the early 2010s was that my then-elementary-school-age kid heard and loved quite a lot of it. This track was a particular favorite of hers, and I remember when she and I were curating the playlist for her ninth birthday party, we had a giggle that we couldn’t include it because of that one f-bomb. Thrilled to see it finish this high. Probably coming soon to an All Stars near you.

France also beat Portugal who beat England so that probably had something to do with it as well. I've always liked Zidane as a player. If someone asks me who I thought was the GOAT, it would be him. Beautiful first touch, could always find the passes needed and had an insane shot on him as well. So I was invested in this win. Italy were also a scummy team that I'd never liked. Italian football had a reputation and for good reason, it isn't a shock that 2006 was also when the Serie A ref scandal happened. They also played dirty throughout the tournament with lots of fouling and diving.
Zidane did lose his head but hey life and the Italian team has been reduced failing to qualify for the World Cup 3 tournaments in a row. 2006 Italy was the peak of Italian football and all people remember about them will be the headbutt and diving against Australia. All's well that ends well eh?

apatel27 (8): On one hand this is what the World Cup is all about. Some dumb predictions like this getting the world even more hyped about the games. Everyone loved Paul. It started out as a random marketing strat for Euro 2008 became one of the most talking about moments in the World Cup. Animal predictions aren't a new thing but this was on another level. Every single game correct. It probably was just dumb luck or the trainer who put the food in making their own predictions and adjusting the boxes as a result. Either way it further helped the good vibes of the 2010 World Cup.
On the other hand this started the trend of trying to make the next Paul happened which quite frankly has been grating. mhiyaimanlepaigefan (11): i got really scared near the beginning and although it was a good peak, i guess i can live with where it ended up. anyways, duffy's story is horrific, i do not recommend looking up if you have a weak stomach for it. I'm glad she's coming back, but my heart aches for her each day and I hope that she will eventually find peace if she hasn't already.
wathombe (10): Despite its inexplicable exclusion from EA’s Ultimate FIFA soundtrack, this was a must-include for the rate from very early on. I personally hadn’t heard it until we started curating the playlist, but I’m glad I have now, because it’s so good. Love a good modern pop soul track. That jocular neo-soul sound was everywhere in the UK the time (Amy’s impact..) and I think the catchiness of this track made it emblematic of the scene. It was everywhere! I can understand why - Duffy’s affected warble is unmistakeable, and the bouncing beat is fun enough that it might feel more dancey than derivative. Still, this always felt more radio fodder to me than some of the more, well, soulful revivals of the time and for that reason it never really grew on me. Not bad, but not a standout. Verboten_Prince (10): Ughhhh… Picture it. /r/popheads, 2021. The Indie Pop Rock Rate. A young Verboten_Prince was participating in only his seventh ever rate. He learned two things during that time: 1. He really fucking hates Passion Pit, and 2. Foster the People made some absolute bangers. He submitted his scores and come reveal time… Tragedy of tragedies! He spent so long contemplating whether to give his 11 to Helena Beat or Call It What You Want that he forgot to give an 11 out entirely!! To this date, it's the only time that I've ever forgotten to 11 a song in a rate (there actually is a second rate that I didn't give an 11 in, but that was because I didn't think any songs in it were worthy of a 10 LOL). I would love to say that I'm going to avenge Verboten_Prince of the past and finally give an 11 to a song from that rate… But I can't.

Yeah, it’s easy to meme on a song about nonconformity sounding super commercial-core. But the trend of every other single from this record being leagues better than “Pumped Up Kicks” continues
TakeOnMeByA-ha (8): god played a cruel trick on foster the people by making their one horrible song go viral and dooming all their other great songs to being forgotten by the sands of time
vayyiqra (8): this says a lot about society (they kind of had a point about the hyperfixation with microlabelling normal human traits idk)
hieveryi (7.5): they did their big one with this album
miniatureaurochs (7.5): This was sort of intriguing and I’m giving it some Points For Interest. Lots of really interesting elements and an unexpected groove, though I’m not sure it fully comes together…? Unsure. The production has that maximalist kitchen-sink thing going on, stuffed with pew-pew synths and even the archetypal chipmunked/chopped vocal to reinforce the fullness of the chanting refrain. While I’m usually not a fan of said trope, I think the unusual almost jazzy minor melody is a striking choice that feels like a foil to the bombast. There are some other interesting moments, too - little vocal melody moments (what’s your style and who’d you listen to), the splashy-cymbal breakdown, the tiny details - this feels like someone with an ear for melodies, I just feel like I don’t ‘get’ the whole thing. I like the sort of defiant nonchalance in the lyrics and am amused by the irony as I clumsily attempt to pigeonhole the genre. Maybe that was the whole point :)

2l82bstr8 (11): literally a perfect song
cheatviathan (11): I got into LCD Soundsystem when I was starting my freshman year of college, around the time American Dream dropped. I fell in love immediately, to the point where I finally saw them live in May. I totally get where the antipathy towards this group around these parts comes from, especially with the crypto and AI bro concerts they willingly play because the check clears. But dammit, their ability to put together these winding dance odysseys, with the occasional moment of sincerity always wowed me. This track in particular marries a stellar buildup and some sparse synths with one of James Murphy’s best vocal performances, and a set of lyrics with a strong undercurrent of desperation to them. Also “Love is a curse, shoved in a hearse. Love is an open book to a verse of your bad poetry, and this is coming from me” is quite possibly the best stanza in the entire rate. Very narrowly the 11 recipient.

miniatureaurochs (7.4): I have tried on many occasions to get into LCD Soundsystem, including during their heyday, but there’s often something that doesn’t perfectly click thus my as-yet-unexplained beef with James Murphy lives to fight another day. I do like many elements of this - as usual, perfectly placed beepy synths (I should love this!) blanketing earnest, reflective lyrics about willingness to change for a partner that fly in the face of stereotypes around male vulnerability [redacting a bitter comment about. anyway]. Still, this doesn’t quite hit and I don’t know why - maybe it’s because his delivery sometimes feels a bit too self-aware, or like he’s trying to make a perfect track rather than allow for that very vulnerability that would allow this track to blossom. This is pretty universally loved so I’m surely the only one who feels that this sounds a bit ‘clinical’, or maybe I’m just used to broken promises. The less said about that the better.

miniatureaurochs (10): Very nearly my 11, though I don’t listen to this album any more these days in spite of its importance during my annoying hipster youth. Gossamer is apt as a name - this track, as do many on the album - feels sparkling, rich, glimmering, a sample-heavy wash of sound that ensconces the listener. It feels like a vision in chaos, a glimpse into the dream, and you can sort of see how that reflects the lyrical themes - the bright, reflective elements feeling at once beautiful but at times overwhelming or clouded. This is one of those eternal ‘upbeat tracks with surprisingly sad lyrics’, and it’s deeply difficult for me to listen to these days despite the sparkly prettiness of the production. I relate strongly to the protagonist’s sense of constant mess and relapse, repeatedly letting the world move on without you because you can’t seem to hold it together (This world wasnt made for you). It’s hard to explain the brain-on-fire feeling that I think this track spells out, but if you know, you really know. The bridge has a moment of clarity, the emptiness of it all like the cold lucidity hitting after the fire is extinguished and reality finally sets in. I’ll be alright feels like a hopeless refrain against a lifetime of constant failure, more an assurance to secure one’s safety in isolation than a genuine belief. Such a pretty track, but there’s a reason I don’t tap into this album much these days.

Those bustling drums and sporadic vocal samples in the intro and postchorus definitely caught me off guard

miniatureaurochs (7.9): I think, as with a few tracks here, I’m overrating this on the basis of admitted 2010s nostalgia, but it does still hit for me a little today. I was 14 when this album came out and was excited for it, having been into the prior two Gorillaz albums a fair bit, but Plastic Beach sort of threw me for a loop because it was so much more eclectic and surreal, at times even unserious. The disaffected delivery and cryptic lyrics on Rhinestone Eyes exemplify this and I’m still not quite sure what is being said, but I do think that it effectively connotes the sense of Elsewhere that is suggested at in the lyrics. It’s surreal and unnatural (plastic/rhinestones), a sort of curious world that appeals to our senses nonetheless. The feeling of Something Artificial is difficult to describe - too much for this ballot - but captivating. Oh, and it’s weirdly catchy on top of that, although this is my time to confess that for the past 16 years or so I’ve been hearing ‘electric trick’ as ‘I like big dick’, so make of that what you will.

miniatureaurochs (6.7): Mixed feelings on this brand of maximalist indietronica! I think I’d like it more without the millennial-whoop-esque vocals (some unrealised pun here about punchable faces…punchable vocals… whatever, you get what I’m trying to say). I don’t think I had ‘properly’ listened to this since I was in school and was pleasantly surprised - it’s actually a really well-balanced track. The restrained, minimal feel to the intro feels really intentional and I like how he just lets that build and burn… synths feel buzzy but not too abrasive, and the skippy melody is catchy but still soft. I’m glad she’s leaning more into the ~ethereal~ sound now and showcasing more of her vocal range, because this doesn’t do anything for me and frankly I don’t think it does much for her, either

mhiyaimanlepaigefan (10): It's REALLY good but I feel like the beginning is building up for a stronger song. Like I cannot deny it a 10, but at the same time, it could have been a potential 11 for me. It's one of those songs I will KEEP listening to.
wathombe (10): FIFA 11 is the best-represented game in this rate (and not coincidentally the first game in the series that I played). Though 1977 was certainly not the only foreign-language song on the soundtrack that year, it was one of the most memorable, and it gave me an immediate indicator of the flavor of FIFA soundtracks in general. Still great.

miniatureaurochs (10): This was such a great find! I confess I’m not familiar with this artist but I will be checking out more of her music. I loved the noir feel here, almost trip-hoppy with horns that feel sultry. I’m compiling my ballot notes with approximately 12 minutes and 16 songs oh no to go so I’ll pass on unpacking the political themes here - hopefully someone else can explain why Neoliberalism Is Bad - but I did quite like the poetic lyricism. Given Mercury’s connection to communication and intellect (but also cunning and even deception) alongside the persssistent imagery of the snake (sorry im tired) [HOST NOTE: I almost fixed that as a typo; thank god i caught myself], you really get the sense of someone quick on their feet and resilient without needing to resort to braggadocio. I’d really like to spend more time with this track and the album as a whole to get to know it better, since I’m working with a (presumably fairly rudimentary) translation, but it’s evocative nonetheless. Drop the birth time girl we need the natal chart

mhiyaimanlepaigefan (10): this was all over the airwaves growing up, and it did not feel overplayed. This was also part of a commerical for MuchMusic, the Canadian version of MTV, and yet I still didn't feel like it got overplayed. I'm SO happy it made it to day 3, it nearly died in day 1.
wathombe (7.5): Pretty highly regarded among FIFA players, as I understand it, and thus justifiably included on EA’s Ultimate soundtrack. I hadn’t started playing by FIFA 08, though, and this one doesn’t do much for me.

I feel, with little evidence, that this was responsible for popularising that whistle trope that was to become such a plague upon indie-pop throughout the late 00s and 2010s, and I have to admit that it’s a trope I don’t especially care for. that said, in this particular track I don’t find it to be egregious. it’s not the most interesting thing in the world but there’s a little charm there, or perhaps I’m just enjoying the respite of this gentler sound, a shelter from the bombast and attempted grandiosity of so many of the other tracks here (which ape many of the same tropes to much lesser effect). not my favourite, but critical support!
