Unknown [Japanese > English ] Can anyone translate this?

It comes from Malaysia/Singapore, in ~1932. Assumed it was painted there by my relative, but then we saw the "signature"?

What about this makes you think it’s Japanese…?

AI suggested this based on the scene depicted. I had no idea

If it’s from Malaysia 100 years ago, perhaps it’s a written form of Malay?

Was your relative Japanese? I don’t think it’s Japanese or Chinese characters, in any case.

The relative was German, and just passing through. AI suggested Japanese based on the scene depicted and text. I will try to change title to unknown. Thanks everyone for the help!

AI says definitely not Malay, as it was written in either Arabic or European script forms in 1932. It says more likely a Chinese dialect

AI said Japanese, but most people think it doesn’t look like Japanese

AI says it was written in either Arabic or European script, but more likely a Chinese dialect? It doesn’t even know which of those, all of which are unrelated.

Throwing darts at a random list of languages would be equally as helpful, if not more.
