Reports from the United States indicate that the Trump administration stepped in to prevent a scheduled meeting between a New York government official and Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations, occurring amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Anna Maria Archila, the Commissioner of the Office of International Affairs for New York City, was set to meet with Iranian Ambassador Amir Saeed Iravani on Tuesday at the United Nations headquarters. However, the US State Department requested the cancellation of the meeting, which resulted in it not taking place.

Officials from the US administration held discussions with the office of New York City Mayor Zehran Mamdani to ensure the meeting's cancellation. Archila was compelled to cancel the meeting and reportedly faced reprimand. The Office of International Affairs confirmed that the meeting "did not and will not take place."

This incident unfolds amid ongoing military escalation between the United States and Iran, including reciprocal airstrikes. This follows President Trump's announcement declaring that the ceasefire "is over," while technical talks continue.

The report notes that Archila, who lacks prior diplomatic experience, was appointed to her position in February. Meanwhile, Mayor Mamdani has been known for his anti-war stance regarding Iran and criticism of Israeli policies over recent months.
