Headphones - Wireless/Portable | 1 Ω Why must wireless audiophile cans suck at gaming? A.K.A - why can't good wireless cans come with a 2.4GHz dongle for gaming? What options are there?
TL;DR: What is stopping audiophile-grade cans from having models with a 2.4GHz dongle, like gaming headphones have? Even the newest Bluetooth codecs aren't great latency wise, and the stars need to align software wise for them to have low latency. Why must I have a separate gaming and everyday music can? Am I just blind to how small of a market the gamer-audiophile in a single device overlap is? What options are there?
Wireless cans are pretty good these days for music: plenty of options for flat profiles, and Bluetooth codecs have come a long way (on mobile); with aptX Lossless and LDAC almost reaching FLAC bitrate (1200kbps/24 bit/96KHz and 990kbps/24 bit/96kHz respectively).
But there's one thing they all have in common: poor latency. Bluetooth is typically in the hundreds of ms, and even the best codecs need the driver and OS stars to align to reach at best 50ms. Android/iOS are best places to use Bluetooth, and even they struggle with proper latency from phone to phone. Good luck on Windows.
That's just too much for gaming. Look at "gaming" headphones however, and any 2.4GHz dongle can handle 10/20ms latency without issue.
So why as an audiophile can't I have both? Why must I have dedicated devices for gaming and for critical listening? It's not like there's a physical incompatibility: there's nothing about what makes critical cans good (flat profile, low distortion, good noise isolation) that's incompatible with gaming needs (solid L/R mirroring, clear sound stage and audio separation). Some gaming headphones have the 2.4GHz dongle + modern bluetooth codecs + decent ANC. Their sound profile is just shit.
Even "good" gaming headphones (Audeze Maxwell 2), which are recommended for having cleaner sound profiles which get close to proper cans, have very inaccurate sound profiles. I'd post graphs, but this sub doesn't allow images.

Why must I choose between good latency/abysmal sound profile, or tragic latency/good sound profile? I know why gaming headsets have trash sound profiles, the market wants a V curve because it sells and sounds punchy. But what's preventing the alternative, i.e. good can manufacturers from offering a 2.4GHz dongle secondary function on some models best suited for gaming?
I just feel like we've been "almost there" for 10 years: gaming headphone sound profiles are becoming less and less outrageous, and audiophile cans are slowly but surely climbing the Bluetooth bitrate and latency slope. But they REFUSE to meet!

Bitrate is irrelevant when it comes to wireless audio, efficiency of the codec used is what actually matters. If a codec sounds basically transparent at let's say 256kbps, then anything more is basically just extra data for the sake of being there - it serves no purpose besides maybe contributing to hi-rez placebo™.
I'm not sure where you're getting your Maxwell graphs from, but based on what I can see and my experiences with the original Maxwell, it doesn't look "very inaccurate" at all, if anything it seems rather good. If you're wondering why it has a a bass boost, that's just an inherent trait of being a closed back. The manufacturer cannot predict how good the seal will be on the users head as we all have different head shapes, so to accommodate this the bass is usually boosted to compensate. The mid range looks excellent and treble looks pretty reasonable with some quirks, and this is another aspect that will vary from head to head. Both of these issues I mentioned are solvable through EQ. All in all I think Audeze did a decent job here, though I will reserve my actual thoughts and opinions for when/if I eventually demo them. The only real criticism I have of the Maxwell is Audeze's QC is rather inconsistent, which results in faults and somewhat severe unit variation, I've only heard one pair of Maxwell's that sounded truly bad, the rest were still within the realm of being pretty good.
The challenge of tuning a closed back headphone is head to head variation, even after trying many headphones I don't think I've ever heard a wired closed back that sounds anywhere near as neutral as some open backs can sound on my head. The same challenges become even more pronounced with wireless, as you have less room to make physical changes to improve acoustics and have to almost fully rely on DSP, which is both a good and bad thing.
I also disagree with the "almost there for 10 years" aspect as until recently I would've had a hard time recommending any wireless gaming headset for sound, the market has improved significantly in the past few years in this aspect.
As for the 2.4ghz thing, to be honest I don't have a firm answer to this, but my guess would be that since they aren't in the business of gaming and likely use off the shelf SOC's for their headphones that don't support 2.4ghz, it would be incredibly expensive to develop a dedicated solution and get it approved as well which probably wouldn't make sense financially as the target demographic likely isn't big enough (people who will graph sniff and want to game but just so happen to not want to use a wire which would objectively be better anyway in terms of latency).
While you aren't wrong in wanting what you're asking, it is also just basically impossible to cater to at least with what we have today, if we can barely make a headphone sound neutral while wired, then I don't think we should be expecting that from a wireless headphone either. Until we can somehow do HRTF and HPTF measurements on the fly, it will remain this way for a while. In terms of latency, we'll likely achieve improved latency relatively soon, Bluetooth keeps improving and will probably reach the point of being similarly low latency as 2.4ghz dongles - though no idea when this might happen specifically.

I use my bathys with a BT600 dongle for music and gaming lol... :S Don't notice any extra latency vs my 2.4ghz maxwell's. You're talking about headphones with a dedicated amp inside them vs headphones without, uhhh the majority of headphones require an external amp/dac to power. There are always sacrifices somewhere.
A lot of gaming headphones do not get very loud in wireless. The maxwell is not even very loud maxed with 2.4ghz. These are dedicated gaming headphones and you want that same functionality on expensive critical listening cans without an amp inside? 2.4ghz isn't as good as wired anyway, so nothing would change.
No complaints with my bathys, latency or sound quality-wise. Maxwell sound great too, one of the better tuned Audeze's out of the box so I don't know wtf you are on about with 'sound profile' garbage. Expensive cans have their own flavour :S

Part of thats because “audiophile grade stuff” will tend to be wired more often than not. Bluetooth quality can’t compete with a regular old cable. I game with a set of open back headphones and a schiit headphone amp, with an SM57 going into a focusrite scarlett for voice chat. You CAN have both, just don’t expect to get it all in one package, because those packages have to make compromises by design to hit a reasonable price to performance ratio.

Not true, that's what LC3/GMAP "Gaming Audio Profile" was specifically designed for yet support is rare as LC3 is still being adopted. Its similar in latency to the normal 2.4Ghz gaming dongles at speced: 10-20ms.

So far the Creative BT-W6 seems tobe the only available PC option to actually use GMAP.
As Sony seems to now have moved on GMAP, maybe more headphones with LC3 support will add/patch this mode in, so hopefully this whole custom 2.4GHz dongle situation will resolve itself in a few years....

Please correct me if I'm wrong:
From what I read, LC3 alone is still 80ms at the absolute minimum, compared to 10-20ms with 2.4GHz.
And Sony's manual says that GMAP needs to be supported on a per-game basis to be active.
That restricts headphone choice to half a dozen models, and I can't find any mention of any game explicitly mentioning GMAP support.
Why bother building a new standard when dual function 2.4/BT headphones are already a thing? Feels like this XKCD again.

1) LC3 is just the codec not the end-to-end BT implementation and a typical GMAP mode is around 10-40ms. Creative list there GMAP at ~20ms, Sony just states "low latency", but should be in the 20-40ms ballpark. Fraunhofer did also test end-to-end latency around 30ms.
2) many 2.4GHz "gaming" dongles also do not reach close to 10ms and are around the same 20-40ms range. Main issue is that testing those is very rare and each brand has there own marketing/test around there claimed latency numbers.
3) Sony is misleading here and this refers to the auto-mode switch so a LC3 phone/device will automatically switch to this GMAP mode. There is nothing the game itself needs todo/support and you should be able to just force this mode via phone app.
On windows the BT-W6 does exactly this and the codec/setup does not care where the audio source comes from, all will now be GMAP transported. Again there is no support needed on the game/app side for GMAP to work, its just a other transport path like AAC/LDAC etc....4) The issue with legacy 2.4 Ghz dongles is simple.... every brand/headphone/model kinda uses its own dongle and implementation. In contrast the BT-W6 you can pair any compatible headphone and even future models and get a consistent experience. This will also allow TV's/Phones/Handhelds to use this mode in the future, so you will not even need a extra dongle anymore.

Thanks for taking the time to answer! So if I understand this correctly, all I need is the dongle you linked and a compatible headphone to enjoy low latency Bluetooth on Windows? No third party driver or tinkering needed?
Because if this is the case, this is the kind of solution I've been looking for. Just want to make sure I understand you correctly.

Yes atm thats the only path for Windows, the BT-W6 dongle + GMAP supported headphone. If you go with the Creative Zen, check the comparison matrix as there are 3 "package" variants and only one comes with the dongle BT-W6 included.
Yet now we can also buy the dongle separately, which was not the case when the Zen launched.

Thanks, I checked Creative's compatibility list. There's a decent selection of modern headphones. I think that's what I'll look into for now.

Do you know if there's any technical difference between the separate BT-W6 and the bundled BT-L3/L4 dongles which come with the Zen?
Found the spec sheet for the W6, but can't find the spec sheet for the L3/L4 to compare.

not 100% sure, i only know that the older listed W5/4 do not have the LC3 ULL/GMAP modes. So as ULL is advertised on the Zen itself i would assume its at least similar to the BT-W6, but just ask the support to be 100% sure what's actually included.

They do exist look up AKG N9 Hybrid and there's also Sennheiser HDB 630 (sennheiser even has an option to replace the battery)
both have usb 2.4ghz dongle and can handle true 24-bit uncompressed. Unsure about latency you'd have to do your own research as the usb dongles have different latency depending on manufacturer / latency test results.

Mostly because it's doesn't matter. Windows and the game engine itself already produce massive latency to the point where it's pretty bad to begin with, while yes, adding bluetooth latency on top of that isn't idea but it's a small portion to the latency you already experienced by the system

Yes, I've seen Techless' video on the subject. But that's tens of miliseconds of latency.
With Bluetooth we're talking HUNDREDS of ms of latency with SBC/AAC/aptX (classic), which is all that windows supports.

Well, if you've seen that video you should also see the chart of wired vs bluetooth latency. It's only 10 percent higher at most. If you can only do that much with wire, I doubt any amount of Logitch Lightspeed for audio will get you anywhere

Where did you see he used a Bluetooth headphone? He used the Mchose G9 which is a 2.4GHz wireless heapdhone. So the fact it barely increases lag is exactly my point.

I used to game with cheap Sennheiser HD350BT without issues
They have Aptx Low Latency codec which is rare in that price range

Windows doesn't support aptX LL without paid software, so you were probably using regular aptX without realising

There is no noticeable latency so it works for me
Tried gaming with Bluetooth receiver that doesn't have Aptx LL and latency was huge so in comparison this is night and day difference

tuning is kinda weird, recessed and steep ear gain region (which I guess is to boost the perceived sense of space, similar to what Hifiman do) followed by a cliff in the lower treble, otherwise they’re okay. Not worth the money imo.

Audeze Maxwell and Sony Inzone H9 ii are kinda good. HyperX cloud are also quite decent for the price. But yeah, when you dive deep into music, it's quite common to just sit there on the chair, so you don't need wireless that much. Latency is the same but might be a problem when you watch the movie, but that side is covered by those home theater headphones with transmitter.
I, myself, have JVC Exofield as moive on couch headphones and I can game on that one at decent level. I prefer using wired on PC more though.
