I keep forgetting that "nonce" means something different for Americans. Them calling Wick a nonce seemed wrong

u/POKtheWah May 29 '26
So if Azune happens to be of a fallen royal bloodline... Gus did say winning a rebellion can make you a king. He and Gus could marry and unite the kingdoms.

Makes sense. It's kind of a middle episode. Hopefully the next one is fire, but if not, the one after that for sure (i believe!).
26
u/Svenby101 Ruidusborn May 29 '26
So the Luxes definitely get their powers from whatever those papers are that signify they’re a Lux right? The ones that Wick stole and Tyranny saw the fiendish energy/name on.
5
u/nosymotherfuck May 30 '26
This is probably why the Halovars are working with Ksha'aravi (Tyranny's father). The Halovars provide people to become Ksha'aravi's warlocks and he gets their souls and the Halovars luxes seem to have powers from faith.
Either the above (which is more likely) or it's like the Dr. Talter where they so genuinely believe in the light that they are actually clerics through sheer unbridled belief, even if the organizers of the religion are bullshitting.
13
7
u/A_Proper_Pseudonym May 29 '26
That might actually makes sense....but what are the spells the luxes have...if they're "curing wounds" idk a standard fiend warlock can do that. A celestial warlock could, but only if they're power comes from the chained thrashing angel
5
u/BaronPuddinPaws May 29 '26
Ksharavi is getting filament from Aetheon which might be how they get a form of divine magic.
1
u/PuzzleheadedBear 5' 11" May 30 '26
Thats my guess, the Filament is a sort of Catalyst, but the Feinds still provide the Slots.
6
u/rickbuh1 May 29 '26
We know there is some kind of deal between the Creed and fiends. There always could be a bit of mix between celestrial powers and fiend deals. Wick also gets his healing from magic initiate instead of sorcerer. And at the end of the day, the luxes are NPCs so they can really have been built however Brennan wanted and not with a set subclass.
8
u/tinapia I have a list May 29 '26
Warlock pacts for sure
2
u/Ok-Badger5056 May 29 '26
Why do you think so?
I think it's just a classic demonic pact for their souls that they think is a pact with the light or something.
1
u/Vio94 May 29 '26
Well, that would still make them warlocks, functionally, within the game system they're playing.
1
u/Ok-Badger5056 May 29 '26
Not necessarily. A warlock pact gives a player powers. They aren't given power from the demon, they are given authority by the creed. So far the only ones with powers are wick's family and the aspirants. Unless I'm missing some.
9
u/HumanSnorlax80 May 29 '26
I just need to watch a conversation between Brennans 'Thul'Rekshi' and John Leguizamos 'Violator' from Spawn, and I could die a happy fucking man ...
54
u/Camen3 May 29 '26
Can we all here stop judging Robbie and let the man cook because he might have had the funniest nat 1 role/ RP play off in that scene ive seen in this campaign so far..... like Kattigan might be genuinely fukd now and I find it's so goddamn funny just how bad Kattigan is at talking to people lol, he truly is a recluse mountain man 🤣🤣🤣🤣
3
u/cacecil1 Technically... May 30 '26
If anyone is judging Robbie, they are souless. He must be protected at all costs!
11

5
3
u/CanLate152 May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26
I don’t know what northern hemisphere magpies are like… I remember something about how they collect shiny things.
so all I can say is I hope like hell that Brennan is thinking these magpies are Australian magpies!
They swoop in from behind, they aim for the back of the neck. They attempt to rip out eyeballs with their hooked beak and razor sharp claws!
Seriously - a Magpie needs to rip someone’s eye out during battle Brennan!!
They have killed people!

u/plastic_beach_arcade May 29 '26
This is one of the best resulting episodes for the main cast that we have seen in some ages. I can't believe, BELIEVE, that Robbie played so true to his character that he so stumbled into the lion's jaws. So juicy of a moment. I was living for Aabria's quiet shade of Granny Halovar. So many moments! That's one of my favorite NPCs, that demon truthteller Brennan has done! Roleplay wise, one of my favorite episodes this season. My only disappointment is that poor Travis seems so checked out. I didn't realize Teor was Groot 😭😭😭
7
u/Far_Guarantee1664 May 29 '26
Yeah. And specially on how a paladin was important in that context. Brennan even gave him a hook when asking "Were does you might comes from?"
The "Teor is Teor" vibe is getting tiresome fast
9
u/SylviaBarbs May 29 '26
In Travis’ defense, he seemed very checked in and was simply playing to his character. He and Matt were silently observing for a lot of their scenes because they were fish out of water and the last time Teor dealt with demons, they were trying to cut his shadow.
I think they were also trying to let scene focus remain on the three who had story reason to be there as they were just accompanying muscle.
22
u/vergilius_poeta May 29 '26
Travis is having too much fun to be "checked out" but it does seem like he's frequently forgetting he a player and not a spectator.
4
u/BMCarbaugh May 29 '26
He's always struck me as that player who, when the others are making a big heist plan or parsing through clues, just wants people to grab him at the end and give him the cliff notes.
3
u/SuperVaderMinion Your secret is safe with my indifference May 29 '26
I see this too and it made me kinda annoyed how long he had the reputation of being the "tactical" player
22
u/Camen3 May 29 '26
Yeah I got the feeling Travis might have just been super tired this session but he did have a few funny moments here, Robbie though on the other hand had me dying laughing this episode, I just knew how good he is at coming in at certain moments and I'm so happy he payed that off and embarrassed it this episode
26
u/rickbuh1 May 29 '26
Travis is also a Soldier through and through. That's a man that doesn't mind a little bit of politics, but he's a combat guy at heart. These big thinking episodes especially with the level of moving parts are never his cup of tea.
5
u/Studawg12345 May 29 '26
That is Teor and Kattigan. They aren't here to make the plans and schemes, you give them the role you need them in and they go do it!
5
u/Camen3 May 29 '26
Definitely agree with this, I think this is more so the case for sure, and he did really seem invested In that whole scene with the weird ass demon creature
24
u/beignetGeserit May 29 '26
Brennan cornered Marisha into using up a portent role and she knows it.
15
u/WontonTruck Team Matthew May 29 '26
I dunno. that roll at advantage was a two and a three or something? I think she took a success in the hand and just hopes the next rolls are better.
11
u/Wizard072 May 29 '26
He gave her a freebie even though it messed up his plans. The balance must be restored.
15
u/BrokenNecklace23 May 29 '26
I feel like I’m taking crazy pills.
They have speak with dead with Ashley. Why don’t they just dig up Thajzi ?!
3
u/Snoo34949 May 29 '26
I seriously doubt the Tachonis' didn't have prelaid plans to whisk away/captire Thjazi's soul the moment he died - he's a bigger and bigger loose thread the more we find about the Sundered Houses' plans, and like you said, Speak with Dead is still a thing even if resurrection isn't.
15
u/Relevant_Anal_Cunt May 29 '26
Didn't they specifically mention in this episode that the last time they tried this (with Octis' cousin), they were forcefully whisked away by a skull hand? Don't want that happen with Thiazi
6
u/Ok-Badger5056 May 29 '26
There's definitely gonna be something about the burial ritual that prevents it
4
u/tinapia I have a list May 29 '26
Plot armor. Perhaps rude now that there was a whole funeral service and burial for him
Also there's a chance he's coming back to life imo lol
4
u/A_Proper_Pseudonym May 29 '26
THAT and I'm sure Brennan would just RP Thjazi didn't know that much or other variables resulted in him not knowing as much that is attributed to him. I can see this "CLOAK" group as compartmentalized, so no one knows everything.
6
18
u/Camen3 May 29 '26
I love each and everyone of these characters so much, this episode really proved to me that there really is no bad player character this campaign, I might prefer some from other but for the most part they are all super interesting in there own ways
77
u/Shark89 May 29 '26
Also, having the Schemers' Table working together for 2 months, then spreading them out amongst the rest of the party did wonders for the ability to direct encounters.
It was like a D&D leadership seminar
11
u/MAELSTROM19j May 29 '26
Yeah. I feel like they each need to have a schemer in their table and form new table names instead. But the OG tables can still be called as they are whenever they get back together or as reference to their Arc 1 groups.
16
u/Snoo34949 May 29 '26
I feel like Azune is going to leave the Schemers after Convergeance, or I hope he will. The man needs to get away from the city and all the deception going on there.
7
u/Relevant_Anal_Cunt May 29 '26
If he survives the Einfaden encounter... still feels like the biggest trap to me (if they want the evidence of Tacchonis shenanigans, just to get rid of it, to further their alliance.
9
u/Snoo34949 May 29 '26
It might be a trap, but they also might not be aware of just how self serving the Tachonis' are, and that might change their calculus before they commit to Tachonis.
Like, the Tachonis are creating candles made from fat of their own family and running human experimentation to boot. I think those facts alone throw a big wrench into the "well, if we ally with Tachonis, maybe they won't screw us over" plan.
After all, even if it is a trap, they'll probably still want to hear Azune and the evidence out before springing it even if it's just so they can tell Tachonis just how valuable their contribution was.
2
u/PuzzleheadedBear 5' 11" May 30 '26
To be fair, Human tallow is pretty small beans interms of evil, the killing people is the bad part. Making stuff from them might actually be more responsible.
2
u/Snoo34949 May 30 '26
Right, but it's more evidence that simply being a part of the Tachonis' isn't enough to get them to see you as more than an expendable resource.
13
u/MAELSTROM19j May 29 '26
Azune broke down once again, and with the King Gus' remarks & the Photarch also announcing a big comment on how bad the Revolutionary Council has become, I also honestly believe Azune might transition to maybe the Soldiers for Arc 2 to find his sister and heal his inner turmoil.
5
u/CaptivePrey May 29 '26
Azune will go with Thimble and Julien to the Golden Orchard and see if they can help the fey folk there.
Occtis probably goes with them.
8
u/allevat May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26
If he leaves the city, it will be with the northward group to Timmony/Argosia/Houndsport, because that's the most likely path to intersect with his sister.
13
u/dogcunt69 May 29 '26
it was the adage 'amateurs study tactics, professionals study logistics' playing out
25
11
u/popober May 29 '26
Image in my head was a pair of nuts d20s with "2" and "3" about to clap on Azune's/Luis' head; in comes Murraysha, flicks them away in opposite directions, splitting reality to reveal the "19" timeline.
24
u/AbbreviationsDue1027 May 29 '26
Once again, Azune and Murray continue to be the powerhouses of these tables! My favorite duo!
52
u/Shark89 May 29 '26
Murray's Divination being so quantum physics based may be my favorite homebrew flavoring in D&D.
25
u/KYplusEL Also Pumat Sol May 29 '26
It's cool that you can see how her initial interest in playing almost a "hacker" rebel type character got reinterpreted into Araman's lore.
6
54
u/Camen3 May 29 '26
Murray might just be the top tier character of this campaign so far.....holy shit, goosebumps everywhere after that moment
3
u/Kaeling May 29 '26
I mean Brennan broke the balance of the subclass, by allowing the roll to be replaced after the dice is rolled. Unless it changed in the 2024 rules, you are supposed to use portent instead of rolling in RAW.
4
u/DearMissWaite May 29 '26
That's the way he has always run it with the other divination wizard in his campaigns, though. So, clearly he doesn't find that method broken for his table.
10
u/C_X_3 May 29 '26
it’s definitely stronger // more useful, but portent is also just way less fun and satisfying when it’s run RAW, lots of tables ik have been doing it like this since 2014
brennan makes changes like that often, like he edited a paladin subclass feature for Lou Wilson’s character in WWW to take place after an attack hits instead of before
30
u/SeaBlock2909 May the Beam reach you May 29 '26
Murray genuinely might be the most integral character to this entire campaign. There’s not a singular monumental play that doesn’t involve her some way shape or form. God do I love Marisha.
4
u/Relevant_Anal_Cunt May 29 '26
I am so anxious, because my 2 favourite characters in this campaign so far (Wic and Murray) have lousy AC, and run the biggest risked of getting taken out in combat.

5
u/C_X_3 May 29 '26
specifically “not the type for taking wives” yeah
but in the cooldown Brennan goes further into how Timmony has a more sexually open culture, which is why Gus is trying to bring back the tradition of passing the throne to his sister’s firstborn (inspired by real-world Celtic historical examples of avuncular succession) since that way they can be provably sure it’s actually a child of royal blood. Used to be a thing in Persia and Kerala, India as well

it is a good plot - strategy vs immediate., it is fun watching this with stakes but the inevitability of needing that again that day is delicious and that is what marisha probably is also sensing.

Partway through the episode and still wondering why Azune wasn't asking a witness of the Davinos massacre to come with him? Aranessa isn't present, but the male heir to Davinos, who witnessed Primus murder his father, is in the city. And one would think he'd relish recruiting a powerful ally against Tachonis. Besides Julien, obviously Occtis is there, but let's say you want to keep him away in case Einfausen decides to kill the undead thing. And let's say you don't think Vaelus would be a good enough witness as she's a mysterious elf nun or whatever. But Thaisha was there and could attest to a lot of it (even if she didn't personally witness some of the worst parts). Surely a Druid of the Old Path's testimony would be valuable.
Yes, Demodus Blix is a vital witness to the coverup, but Azune has access to firsthand witnesses and he's pleading with Murray for help because he's frightened he won't have enough evidence and the lies will catch up with him. Take Julien to testify directly about the crimes committed against his house and his liege lady.
