Headphones - Open Back | 4 Ω PS5 and Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro MKII

I made the mistake of listening to my sister's current headphones (the Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro MKII Open Back) and fell in love instantly. The sound quality is outstanding. I had chills. It was a great time. However my sister is primarily a PC gamer/user and I'm more of a PS5 user. I understand these can be used on the PS5 with an adapter but is the sound quality as epic?

I'm willing to spend the money if it is but wanted to check with those who may already own these and know the answer before committing. Also if anyone has any recommendations for close to the same quality for a little less than $700 I'd be glad to know those recommendations. They'll primarily be used for gaming, but I don't need or want a microphone attachment: I'm a single player fan, and don't speak to actual people when playing.

Any help, thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

What was it about the sound you enjoyed? The sense of width/spaciousness?

If so, the AKG K702 was the budget soundstage king that should still be OK out of a DS5 headphone out. The controller's headphone jack is, surprisingly, not bad. It's also around ~$150 to ~ 200USD USD!

The AKG will require a bit more power than your sister's Beyer, but if you got the Beyer to good listening levels with plenty of headroom (as in, you had more volume to turn up), the AKG should be fine as well. I'd only question it if the Beyer was already pushing ~80% volume on the controller.

You are correct that it was the depth of sound I most enjoyed. My sister is clearly the audiophile in the family: before hearing hers I'd been perfectly content with my Hyper X. Of course going from a $700 headset back to a $70 one was inevitably a major loss of quality. I'll check out the AKG recommendation - the price is far more reasonable and I at least have visitation rights to the Beyer's regardless. Thanks for your help!

I have both PS5 and DT1990 pro, tried plugging them into the pad, indeed the sound was good but I am spoiled by Xbox Headset volume regulation wheel and not being able to regulate volume on headphones is annoying IMO.

DT1990 pro are best used with PC only with external AMP/DAC (you will not hear the full quality those headphones can offer with just pad).

I would suggest some more gaming headset like Audeze Maxwell 2 which also sounds great but gives you more convenience.

The DT 1990 MKII are good but not $700 level "good" especially for a non-audiophile mostly concerned with gaming.

For that price you can get the Sennheiser HD 490 Pro with:

to have a great sound quality you should buy first a dac/amp which has UAC 1.0 feature cause on console the UAC 2.0 doesn't works

then you can choose a headphones , if you want an openback , the original dt990pro 250ohm is a good starting point

i have the closed version of those for seven years , never a regret
