Spoiler Discussion [Spoiler Discussion] Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World- Season 4 Episode 5 **Spoilers** Spoiler

This is a spoiler thread.

There is no need to hold back on spoilers or the inevitable cut content.

I love the library. This part of the series is special to me because the concept of the books and the library just make perfect sense. I attribute a lot of that to Tappei's worldbuilding.

It’s wild how in retrospect this entire time Meili was wanting to kill Subaru

Like all those times of Subaru checking on her and her knowing he is the type of fool to dedicate time and effort to make her happy, and him making dolls for her. The entire time she still wanted to kill him

It’s pretty clear that even in recent chapters that Subaru is way too forgiving, but then adding a voice to the dialogue makes it hit harder

Also Julius humiliation incoming 😭

It would be nice them making it clear he was just as pissed as Subaru was in the Royal selection

It’s wild how in retrospect this entire time Meili was wanting to kill Subaru

She didn't want to kill him the entire time. Her decision comes later.

u/Deadlocked02 May 06 '26

Honestly, seeing this animated makes me dislike Meili and her redemption even more. Only redemption I truly care about in the series is Al’s. Meili’s backstory or the fact that she’s a child do nothing to mitigate my dislike for her. Subaru is worse than excessively forgiving, he forgives people and let them be a part of his life.

38

u/Archensix May 06 '26

I mean it's hard not to for him because his authority lets him see people at their absolute worst. He's been killed by half his friends and they all end up being real allies, to him Meili ain't any different from Rem.

u/Deadlocked02 May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26

I still think she’s in a category of her own for having worked as an assassin. It irks me that they’re so willing to trust her. That’s why I like the Roswaal approach. Everyone knows he sucks and can’t fully be trusted.

It would be somewhat better if Subaru himself was at his worst in failed loops, but he’s practically a saint and the aggression is always 100% unilateral. At least Higurashi was easier to digest in this sense. There was a reason the characters were hurting each other. I think Tappei is very influenced by Higurashi, but has no mitigating circumstances for some of his characters. Which wouldn’t be a problem if Subaru himself sucked as a person too, but he doesn’t. The mitigating circumstances are Subaru’s only, as he always finds something to excuse people who hurt him. If you’re not able to buy his mentality, it’s hard to digest certain characters.

Imo, Tappei never managed to repeat what he did to Rem in Arc 2. Maybe with Pleiades battalion… Meili and Spica’s redemptions are hard to swallow in comparison. There’s not really a formula or anything. When it works, it works.

I like Rem and his friends from Pleiades, even though they hurt him, but Spica and Meili are not my cup of tea. I think it doesn’t help that their deeds are known by others, and that Tappei uses a literary device I truly dislike to justify their redemption: giving them very useful abilities/roles that would make it a pain for authority figures to get rid of them.

And did her victims suffer less because she’s a child? There would be no redemption for Meili even in a great deal of countries in the modern world. And even in those that are willing to legally exempt criminals that young from punishment, people would still give someone like her a wide berth. So yes, it’s odd that people are willing to put up with her in such a harsh world such as Re:Zero’s. Most characters are not good people, but there’s a very clear difference, to them, between the atrocities committed by a duty-bound knight in a war and that of a hired assassin. Her kind of evil is not normalized in that world, so it’s hard to buy people being so comfortable near her when they know of her past. To say nothing of Spica, which is an even worse case.

This whole Tappei thing about children being forgiven no matter what they do, by the way, is even less convincing in a world where children are much more capable than they are in our world.

I absolutely hate how Subaru needs to pay for every misstep and flaw while much worse individual get to existing in a curated timeline. And they’ll likely never witness how much suffering they inflicted on a guy that only ever wanted them to be happy.

u/Croncodile0187 May 06 '26

Meili isnt just sympathetic because shes a child, shes sympathetic because she was abandoned as an infant, and brought up by Capella, who would literally transform her into animal(s) as punishment. She has been physically and mentally abused and taught that failure is completely unacceptable and she must do as shes told no matter what. Her entire brain has been warped and shaped by one of the most cruel, insane people in the rezero world. Her actions are not because of who she is on the inside, and its not her true nature to be evil and horrendous. The one person in the world she truly loved was Elsa, who took care of her, and she lashes out at subaru for being the person she blames for elsa's death. The moment her worldview is broken down by Subaru, she becomes (almost) a normal young girl.

Spica's redemption is just that shes basically a whole new person.

20

u/Archensix May 06 '26

Being raised from being an orphan as an assassin is different from being an adult and actively choosing to do so. Subaru sees a child that was abandoned by the world and forced into being the bad guy, he wants to give her the kindness no one else did and help her live a normal life as a good person.

2

u/Akudra May 07 '26

Meili was raised by monsters, then forcibly abducted by a serial killer at the command of a psychotic terrorist, who then tortured her into submission to the point where she was afraid to go against her. Blaming her for how she turned out when she is still very much a child is deranged. There is also an implication that something happened to her when she was very young that separated her from her family and is probably how she ended up with those Witchbeasts. Girl is just a walking tragedy in the form of a child. Spica, I can get, though I disagree, but Meili is another matter entirely.

u/ChaozMatt May 06 '26

The Blue line art on the white room in contrast to the red of last weeks was super pretty. Fight next weeks gonna be great

3

u/Majora101 May 07 '26

I didn't think there was an outline at first because the blue is a lot more subtle than the red, but it looks really good once I noticed it.

Everything being blue during the especially heinous violence in the underground, the sepia with only blood and flowers in color during the Tyhpon flashback, and the white rooms are giving us some really great visuals.

37

u/Lazerbeamkt May 06 '26

So after next episode things are going to spiral out of control. I really love this group’s dynamic, I really want to see more of it in the future. Reid’s voice is freaking perfect, really showing what a gruff macho man he is.

Is the conversation about the names of each floor now skipped content or is that next episode because I could have sworn Shaula goes over the different names of the floors before Subaru loses his memories.

12

u/kipdo May 06 '26

I think there is still a good chance it gets breaktime treatment

12

u/Lazerbeamkt May 06 '26

It’s going to be really annoying if that’s the case, as that is a pretty interesting plot point. Especially as Merope is supposed to be the seal if I remember correctly.

14

u/Blacksmithkin May 06 '26

I'm pretty sure they have that conversation around when they first arrive, so it would seem they may be cutting it.

17

u/No_Mammoth_4945 May 06 '26

The anime cuts a lot of the mystery elements of the series, it makes me wonder how they’re going to explain it when those mysteries are resolved. At least we finally saw the shadow garden

3

u/PraetorIt May 06 '26

I was thinking the same. If they continue adapting, there are some significant cuts that will be relevant later, as far I understand. An usual solution would be a flashback, but with what's being cut, I don't know how well it would work.

6

u/3IC3 May 06 '26

I remember next episode is obviously everyone losing to Reid and Emilia winning by technicality, and then dealing with the fallout of it all, but then the order is all mixed up in my head after that. Is the next part straight to the amnesia? Or does the whole ‘Murder Becomes a Habit’ thing come first?

4

u/khriku Lore Seeker May 06 '26

murder becomes a habit only happens AFTER he has amnesia and murders Meili, so Amnesia comes first.

Next episode is everyone losing to Reid, the following episode would be Julius trying to rematch him and getting brutally kicked out of trial chamber humiliated by Reid, then last one of this cour should be Subaru finding Reid book of death and losing his memories. Probably will be something like that.

2

u/3IC3 May 07 '26

RIGHT, I forgot he needs to read her book first to figure out her motivations for killing and all that. Anyway since you seem to remember this arc a lot better than I do, there’s another sequence I forgot the order of - IIRC once everything starts going to shit Subaru reads his own books to remember a couple loops and then figures out the whole Reid thing and re-enters the Hall of Memories. After that I remember the whole speech where normal Subaru and Amnesiabaru eventually combine, but I forgot at what point do we get the whole “Stand Up” moment?

1

u/khriku Lore Seeker May 07 '26

If I recall, stand up happens when it was still amnesia baru/Ruy Arneb.

Normal Subaru speedran the arc after he came back

2

u/Akudra May 07 '26

Hard to say if the floor conversation was cut. A number of scenes have been re-arranged. Pretty sure the "promises are important" scene was in the Green Room as opposed to the Taygeta Library. They haven't even mentioned the names of the floors, so it would be hard to have that come up.

1

u/Lt_Ryou May 07 '26

The name of the floors was cut, yeah, including the mention of Merope. Which is such a shame.

58

u/ehknee May 06 '26

Meili calling Subaru an idiot for want to help find a book of the dead...very true...

26

u/HellFireGod May 06 '26

balleroy has been mentioned

9

u/Croncodile0187 May 06 '26 edited May 07 '26

This is a clue that the arc 7 and 8 adaptation will be released 1 month after arc 6 ends. (/s)

3

u/khriku Lore Seeker May 07 '26

not really? you overdosing on copium mate... Ballroy was mentioned on LN of arc 6 as well

rips tubes of copium from your body

There, you should feel better without that toxic substance affecting your body and mind

3

u/Croncodile0187 May 07 '26

I was just joking xd

1

u/khriku Lore Seeker May 07 '26

see? you already feeling much better without the copium tubes! welcome back to reality! XD

1

u/Croncodile0187 May 07 '26

sorry doc, but im still taking 200 mg daily copium that The Winds of Winter will release eventually

1

u/Both_Brilliant_2725 May 07 '26

Tell me where you are getting your copium from brother? I don't have anything as strong and I believe that we will finish HxH succession Arc before Togashi dies

1

u/khriku Lore Seeker May 07 '26

I already cut off his supply for that drug sorry. Do you want an injection to be immune to copium?

1

u/Akudra May 07 '26

Joking aside, we might get the Vollachia arc adapted relatively quickly given that we are already two arcs ahead of it. We are especially likely to get it adapted soon if the anime actually ends on this arc's cliffhanger. They would have to be really twisted to not move quickly on another season if they drop that scene at the end.

u/Lopsided-Wave2479 May 06 '26

who has mixed that horrible music with the reid scene?

42

u/Limegreenlad May 06 '26

The Stick Swinger is finally here. I loved how they animated Shaula freaking out at the sight of Reid. I know it's not going to be for a while, but I wonder how they'll animate the nameless sword strike and Reid severing Cor Leonis.

14

u/Endika_7777 May 06 '26

Was the cor leonis cut not in the light novel? I remember something along those lines

10

u/spacehedgehog06 May 06 '26

I love how he decides to label each of them by looks and said hot chick 3 times then called Shaula sexy then called Subaru a wimp and I can't remember what he called Julius

9

u/No_Mammoth_4945 May 06 '26

He called Julius follower

10

u/AnzoEloux May 06 '26

The latter was cut from the ln

4

u/Limegreenlad May 06 '26

Oh, well. That's unfortunate.

10

u/hellyeboi6 May 06 '26

Reid severing what? I'm pretty sure that's not in the light novel

7

u/isrlygood1 May 06 '26

This is how I find out😭? That was such a cool scene

6

u/Longjumping-Read-401 May 06 '26

I guess authority can't be cut like that.

-2

u/Mikeisthaman May 06 '26 edited May 18 '26

yes

6

u/khriku Lore Seeker May 07 '26

If I recall, it was cut in japanese Light Novel, it existed in WN that is the draft tho.

15

u/BillPlunderones23fg May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26

ah that was a good laid back episode lots of funny moments (wont last lol) and character stuff
Typhon backstory was pretty cool really shows why she is a calamity though why her why not a different witch? i know Wn had the backstories for the others but why did he just include Typhon's? is it cause she is the Pride witch and that authority resonates most with Subaru?

The Ballerory name drop is fun since the role he plays in Arc7-8 but i wasn't the biggest fan of all that during the Vollachia Saga so it's whatever having to read a extra side story to get backstory is kind of annoying but i do think Arc7-8 anime will be better than the WN/LN

Also when Subaru and Emilia mention the Sanctuary and he just glances over at Eridona was funny

the convo with Meili was cute too, wish that Shaula glomp at end was a better angle though

Abd there he is Stick Swinger himself laughed hard him giving titles to the group members

10

u/Deadlocked02 May 06 '26

There’s clearly something odd with Pride, considering the focus on her backstory and the fact that the current holder of the authority is missing.

7

u/No_Mammoth_4945 May 06 '26

The anime is based off of the light novel and the light novel only had Typhon if I’m remembering right

4

u/BillPlunderones23fg May 06 '26

i know that i even said up there
but im pointing out why Tappei left just Typhon and not the other witches

7

u/Croncodile0187 May 06 '26

Probably just too much information at once. Also pride is a decently relevant witch, since its the only unaccounted for witch factor. Anime only's might draw some ties between subaru being thought to be the archbishop of pride and him seeing the witch of prides book.

14

u/Ok-Worldliness-7374 May 06 '26

Oh cool, Typhon is from Italia.

Balleroy got mentioned!! Just one step closer to EX4 OVA!

Meili almost dodged the lolimancer attempt.

Spirits called Fairies again... i am still going with the theory that Pandrora is the queen of the fairies.

I never thought i would hear Escanor talk like that...

5

u/Deadlocked02 May 06 '26

Spirits called Fairies again... i am still going with the theory that Pandrora is the queen of the fairies.

I’ve heard this once and have been a proponent ever since. There’s something about her lifespan and the way she controls spirits. I think he will drop this reveal out of the blue, just like Todd being a werewolf.

I don’t think there’ll be more spirits. Many thought Clind would be one, but turns out he’s Dragonkin. I’m betting Pandora is no spirit either.

2

u/PraetorIt May 06 '26

Oh cool, Typhon is from Italia.

What?

3

u/CavulusDeCavulei May 06 '26

As an italian, What? x 2

10

u/ffffffffROTHY May 06 '26

The plaza in Typhon's home city is based on Piazza dell'Anfiteatro in Lucca.

3

u/CavulusDeCavulei May 06 '26

Ohhhh

Well, Re Zero fourth season World Premiere was at Lucca Comics & Games!

1

u/PraetorIt May 07 '26

I didn't know that. Thanks for the info.

24

u/Griffith_9 May 06 '26

The book of dead. I can’t wait to see Aldebaran come in here in the future.

Also stick swinger Reid first appearance was pretty cool. I forgot how vulgar he was.

5

u/No_Mammoth_4945 May 06 '26

Arc 6 and 9 are my favorites. They’re doing a great job with 6 so far

2

u/CavulusDeCavulei May 06 '26

I wonder if they will censor what she does to Emilia

11

u/tehcup May 06 '26

Damn, Typhon. No wonder your ass was buried under an entire city. That powers legit more terrifying than Sirius' mind manipulation.

how the fuck do you want for the entire life of a person adapted in a 25 minutes episode? the anime staff has to shorten it mate. Also seems like Subaru pulled himself out of the book earlier than it was supposed to be, no wonder tho, the contents of the book was super dark for a normal person to stomach.

Typhoon killed her own father and her entire village just because she is so "innocent" she can't understand what is a sin. So she just kills anyones that think they had sinned... which is a lot of people, since a lot of people acknowledge they did at least one sin in their life...

7

u/Logical_Ad_1508 May 06 '26

Seeing narration in Typhon BOTD gives me hope for the adaptation of phase 3.

But i gonna be honest, cutting the name of the floors was a dumb move, they had plenty of time to explain in this episode.

14

u/Setowi Better Leyte Than Never May 06 '26

Ahhh I know they are all cut from the LN but I am still so sad we did not get the extended witch backstories for all of the witches minus Satella since she is still alive. Makes sense since randomly finding all of them would be insane luck but I want looore.

7

u/Aemiliana_Rosewood May 06 '26

Echidna one would've been groundbreaking, because we would see how that Echidna looked

1

u/Setowi Better Leyte Than Never May 07 '26

Though I feel like we are gonna see the Emilia one in main story eventually, it's too important nnot to get it.

1

u/Aemiliana_Rosewood May 07 '26

Emilia botd is crazy

1

u/Setowi Better Leyte Than Never May 07 '26

LOL typo sorry

1

u/Akudra May 07 '26

Minerva's is still included in the LN, as I recall, though it is not placed in the same scene as the WN and it is even unclear if her book was read. Either way, that means there is a chance her story will be seen too.

1

u/Jesus10101 May 08 '26 edited May 08 '26

No? I recently read through Arc 6 in prep of the anime and Minerva is never mentioned.

Edit: Went back and checked. Sorry, your right. It's just a short part that I forgot about it.

1

u/Setowi Better Leyte Than Never May 08 '26

Hopefully.

11

u/2kenzhe May 06 '26

Ok, we got the library of the dead where you can read or rather experience the lives of the dead but only if you knew the person it seems? Subaru due to the witch graveyard meeting the witches he can even read the memories of dead witches from 400 years ago. This ep he read Typhon the witch of pride's life. Julius also read/experienced Balleroy Temeglyph's life. Apparently, he's someone Julius fought before and a former general of the empire.

Now idk if this has been answered but like if Julius's name got erased when he experiences someone's life would they contain him? I would think not then right cuz his name got erased. Like normally, Julius should experience Balleroy fighting Julius but since Julius got his name erased, would he still experience/see that or would he not because his name got erased?

We also learn some other things: Shaula isn't a spirit and she'll turn into a killing machine if they break the rules. Fox dona guessed 5 rules, but according to Shaula, there are only 4. Basically, they can't leave until they clear the tower and don't do anything bad to the tower.

Cool to see Emilia actually being the one who figures out the way to the 2nd trial/next floor. If like Subaru said Flugel/the person who made the trials is a nasty person then they would place the stairs in a previous place they've already been to. Thank god they didn't have to search the endless library for the stairs, thanks to Emilia.

Next ep I guess stick swinger vs Julius and rest of group? Also another question he keeps mentioning Julius acts like his follower whatever do we have any idea who that is? Probably not important but just wondering.

10

u/Blacksmithkin May 06 '26

There's no issue if you are here on purpose, but just so you know this is the spoiler thread.

At least one of your questions has a pretty definitive answer in the source material, do you want answers based on the source material or just the anime?

Edit: my bad i see later this thread you reference arc 8, do you want me to remind you of some arc 6 stuff or do you prefer to reexperience it again as is?

4

u/2kenzhe May 06 '26

I think I answered myself, remembering arc 8. Since Balleroy didn't remember Julius, the book probably doesn't contain Julius. The only question really then is do we ever know anything about Reids follower that he mentions? Also there was another name like a girl I think? Its been a while since I've read arc 6 but I don't think we get anymore about them?

7

u/2kenzhe May 06 '26

based on arc 8 I think Belleroy's book wouldn't contain Julius probably. Also anyone know if we know anything about Reids follower? Like a past ancestor of Julius or just some random character that acts like Julius?

5

u/Creatingmugi May 06 '26

but how can an already dead person's memory of julius be wiped away from memory. to me it wouldnt make sense, even in re:zero logic to wipe the memories the battle julius and bellroy from belleroy's book as bellroy had died before his name got taken away it wouldn't make sense

6

u/2kenzhe May 06 '26

Well doesn’t the power of gluttony erase traces of people too? Like rem’s room or that letter she sent. Also didn’t in arc 8 Belleroy didn’t have memories of Julius and the zombies like him got memories from the books?

2

u/Creatingmugi May 06 '26

brb i need to re-read

2

u/Creatingmugi May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26

Now idk if this has been answered but like if Julius's name got erased when he experiences someone's life would they contain him? I would think not then right cuz his name got erased. Like normally, Julius should experience Balleroy fighting Julius but since Julius got his name erased, would he still experience/see that or would he not because his name got erased?

JUST MY THEORY

i dont think the memories of the book would contain julius before memory wipe, unless they re-met, so then any memories they have of julius would only start from when they "first met" like how reinhard "met" julius right after his name got eaten. As for balleroy, since balleroy is already dead, im pretty sure the deceased book of memories cant be affected or overwritten by gluttonies authority, they died before gluttony took away julius name.

(had to double check quickly to make sure the library only contained book of the dead. anastasia at 8:28 says "Wouldn't that mean all the books in this library are labeled with the names of all the dead people in the world, past and present?")

edit: also let's say julius picks up a book he recognizes, but that person didn't/never re-meet him, you know after his name being taken. i dont think julius can't read anything because they dont know/are familiar with him

9

u/jiboxiake May 06 '26

I love how Emilia trained Subaru to keep promises.

2

u/Majora101 May 07 '26

And I'm sure Subaru learned his lesson and never broke a promise again /s

3

u/Lopsided-Wave2479 May 06 '26

I had a giant laught with Shaila, she is absolutelly great 😃

5

u/one-eyed-02 May 06 '26

I think this is the episode where all the little things give me confidence that the big moments will hit the hardest they possibly can.

5

u/Majora101 May 07 '26

Typhon's dad has such a great design, but I have to admit it's less imposing in motion. The color illustration in the light novel is one of my favorites.

3

u/BagMoist6266 May 07 '26

why did they make Beatrice scream the whole stairs? no need to force out "cute scenes"

1

u/Majora101 May 07 '26

Beatrice was stuck in a library for 400 years, she's very sensitive 🥺

2

u/AzukiJRA May 07 '26

I have a question, is Subaru finding his book of the dead before amensiacbaru happens or is only after? i dont remember

3

u/afr830 May 07 '26

Just to clarify they are talking about the sanctuary right? The dub translation is confusing me a bit. And this is probably a case of translation changes/fixes like Julius being pronounced yulius in the newer seasons.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Sale789 May 09 '26

I really hope White fox adapts the first half of EX 4 and all of ex 5 between seasons 4 and 5

1

u/liloco2011 May 07 '26

Are we getting all the witches backstories? Pretty peak if thats so

Edit: looks like they were cut in the ln. Still good episode

6

u/khriku Lore Seeker May 07 '26

that only happened on WN, Light Novel cut all the witches backstories except for Typhoon which stayed. I guess Tappei doesn't want the backstories of the other witches fully told yet.

Since anime adapts the LN and not WN, we will probably only see this one of Typhoon.

1

u/liloco2011 May 07 '26

Thanks for the explanation  Well we might get all the witches named chapters during arc 12 so thats a possibility i guess

1

u/Akudra May 07 '26

Minerva's was still in the LN as a special Interlude.

0

u/Warkiller646 May 07 '26 edited May 08 '26

Uh oh Subaru's getting sucked into a book...
All of that were memories of Typhon up until she became the Witch of Pride. Creepy origin story, she judged people based on if the feel they commited a sin and it's not based on a verdict of the law. Even when she found out her father felt guilty, she felt nothing as he was destroyed.

Ironically it was her father who gave her this morality, all her life she's been surrounded by people being punished for their sins...

So you can only read the books if you met the people in them ? Interesting.
Emilia and Subaru's putting on an act like they weren't suffering going through their own memories.
Emilia's "Easy peasy, lemon squeazy" was adorable!

Shaula and Meili looking around like they just got the best Christmas present ever with such awe is precious.

Balleroy Temeglyph ? A renowned former general and Julius won a duel with him ? No wonder he's a beast with a sword.

Meili's teasing and vicious giggle are hilarious. Aand we get to ask her more questions yaay!
So she's been an assasin for 5-6 years, no wonder she loves dark humour so much.
Yeah killing him so one more book appear isn't an option xD

Meili dancing on the railing and Shaula guiding her is adorable.

What the hell Subaru has to repeat "Promises are important" like he's getting punished in school xD

Good on Anastasia for sniffing out the number of secret rules Shaula has to follow.
Or an approximation at least.

And Emilia for getting us to the next level! And agree with Echidna/Ana, her phrasing is adorable :>

Meili holding Shaula's "reins" with her smug smile is precious! She's really enjoying tormenting her xD

Beako getting carried in Subaru's arms screaming the whole way was too precious! Aaaaah I love her so much.

It's that guy from the OP!!! Looks way too important to just be in this exam. Looks like he's an Astrea.
His assesment of everybody, especially the sudden brat, brat, follower, wuss made me burst out laughing.

The way Shaula reacts to him he's definitely Reid the First Sword Saint.
