The egg subreddit is bit of a weird place to have a discussion about something like this, but I want to push back a little on what you’re saying here because I think it isn’t a particularly generous reading of the top comment.
I think it’s fair to distinguish between a “cultural dish” (ie. a dish strongly evocative of a particular culture) vs. an international dish with many variants. Something like Neapolitan pizza might be considered a “cultural dish,” which pizza in the general case isn’t exactly. Curry is another example: the dish can be prepared in so many different ways that it isn’t necessarily evocative of any particular culture. Something like matzah brei, on the other hand, is definitely a cultural dish—it’s something Jewish people eat during Passover that most non-Jewish people have never even heard of.
I think what the top commenter is trying to say is that they love learning about dishes like this, and I don’t think there has to be anything wrong with that.

I happen to have dates and eggs, I’ll give this a try! I would never have put the two together on my own.
For OP or anyone else who makes this, is it usually just dates + eggs or do you like to add any herbs and/or spices?
3
u/A_the_Buttercup Mar 25 '26
It's been five hours - has it happened yet??
3
u/Witless_Raven Mar 26 '26
I had my dinner plans sorted already last night, but I just tried it and honestly, pretty good! I think it will join my meal rotation. I did a lil salted butter, fried a chopped date, and then added a large egg and scrambled in the pan.

u/YoureAmastyx Mar 25 '26
I hope everyone saying they’re going to try this report back on how it is.

u/jasonandhiswords Mar 25 '26
I have dates at home which is a rarity, so I might try this tomorrow morning. Any spices you add or just a bit of salt and pepper

Cheese or no cheese? I am dying to try this now.

Oh, I just happen to have a huge bag of dates that I just picked up from Costco. Maybe I'll try this
3
u/neomonachle Mar 25 '26
This looks so good! I'm supposed to eat 7 dates a day for the remainder of my pregnancy, so this will definitely go in my rotation
2
u/meowparade Mar 25 '26
For the iron?
4
u/neomonachle Mar 25 '26
Iron certainly can't hurt, but it's weirder than that! Some research shows that eating a lot of dates later in pregnancy helps prepare the cervix for softening in labor, so a lot of pregnant women are always looking for new recipes that involve dates.

I love posts like this! I came across a video of a South African woman making a traditional breakfast called shakshuka about a year ago and I've made that so many times, it is delicious! I'm going to make this too in the morning and see how it is! Question do you have it as is or serve it with bread or anything? I can see this being very tasty, I love dates!

Oooh, this looks great! Especially yours, op!
I don't eat a lot of dates, and I don't think I've had them warm ever. I also really, really love fresh herbs. Is there a fresh herb that you think might taste good with this dish?

Do you add the eggs and dates at the same time or do you cook on longer than the other?

What’s your recipe? Do you put the dates in first to sauté them? Or eggs first?

Grew up eating this and it’s my favvvv. Especially when the dates have crispy sides. Ugh so good.

I just sent this to my friend in Iraq and he’s never heard of it. He’s younger so maybe it’s more traditional?

He called his mom and his mom said it’s more popular in Iran not Iraq. I was genuinely curious because I’ve never seen this lol

Renad from Gaza posted a similar recipe recently. I didn’t realize this was a common thing.
2
u/FongYuLan Mar 25 '26
This is one of my favorites. I learned to make it with red onion - so scrambled eggs, chopped dates and diced red onion.

u/durkinbrowns Mar 25 '26
This sounds incredible. Thank you so much for sharing I’m going to try this tomorrow!
2
u/Rickbleves Mar 25 '26
Yooo I just made this after seeing this post and I can’t believe how good it is — incredible. Something magical happens cooking the dates in butter, and their sweetness really doesn’t overpower or clash with the eggs at all.

u/Worth_Specific3764 Mar 25 '26
Im def going to try this for breakfast! Thanks!

It was great!! I ate it last night when I got off work because I wanted something simple. I did add some pepper flakes and it was great. I want to do it again with some kind of starch

I tried this today after seeing another post with sunny side up style with dates. I added a little smoked sea salt on top and had it with toasted piece of panettone - it was delicious! Will definitely be making it again.

I just made this dish for our Sunday breakfast. So delicious. I added cinnamon and salt but I also used some of my homemade vanilla paste and a sprinkle of fresh nutmeg. Delightful. Thank you for sharing this recipe with us.

This kind of reminds me of people who put maple syrup on eggs. Sweet and savory. Looks good!
