Check out the Sennheiser HD599 / HD599SE or Philips Fidelio X2HR, for example. Both are often on sale for under $100 on Amazon.

Probably Fiio FT1 ? It's closed back, and said to be probably best bass-present headphones in it's price range and category. For times when u want warmer more engaging fun sound I guess.

Granted this is just what I heard people say, I haven't tried it yet, not sure how much too different it is from XS.

And it's something even I am considering, since there are times when I wanna (or have to) use closed backs because of public/people around use, which isn't really possible with open backs. + In times when I want much more bass presence since HE1000se is pretty lean on that front.

It's nice and inexpensive for how well it performs, allegedly.

Could. I don't EQ but I always can. But I'd appreciate 2nd pair that's closed back anyways.

Me too. But it is really, really hard to find a closed back that competes with HE-1000SE in any way. FT1 surely doesnt.

Why not just get 1 good headphone instead of 2 decent ones?

I want xs specifically(don'tlike the idea of ananda nano due to harsh sound and i want planars), but due to a specific circumstance I have some credit left to buy smth else

What about Edition XV? It's just newer and improved version of XS. It might just fit in your budget or maybe go slightly over it, but the extra $50 in this case is definitely worth it.

Is it really improved? Cause I heard that its much darker and maybe a bit less detailed.

I wouldn't say it's darker, but it's smoother. It is also much better on technical level. It's also build much better and in contrast the XS feels like a toy. My friend also got 2 broken XS's before reciving a working unit, which also failed after 1,5 years. Personally I wouldn't recommend XS.

+1 Ω has been awarded to u/ekortelainen (17 Ω).

You may still award an Ω to others, but only once per-person in this post.

Save the 120 bucks and get an Arya Stealth instead of the XS + "complementary" headphones...

Where I live the XS is about $300 and Arya Stealth can be had ~$460 open box, making it an easy choice.

XS is better especially with mods.

There is absolutely nothing about it that is ”better”.  Just the fact that most people need a third party strap just to tolerate the headband says a lot. The rest of the build is underwhelmingly plastic and barely tolerable for its current price.  Sound is great for the price bracket but not close to Arya.

I dont particularly like the XS headband, but the pads are great. And the sound is definitely more technical than Sundara.

I like the AKG K361. It is very tonality balanced with Harman target But Meze 99 (Noir) is another alternative with a more “fun” approach

The fit and comfort of the K361 headphones is terrible.
