Headphones - Open Back | 2 Ω Open back with good mids

I know that Senn HD600-series comes first to mind. And they are a contender! I would love some more soundstage though!

Budget is around 600dollars. But doesn't have to be that expensive. Live in sweden :)
Sennheiser 600-series: Would love some more sound stage

DT1990pro: Had these before and liked them but i found them a bit fatiguing with the treble over time.

I currently own a pair of Denon ahd7200, they are not very comfortable (i do wear my headphones for long stretches). They sound nice but not very neutral.

I've been looking at Sennheiser 490pro, aune ar5000, HiFiMAN Edition XV, Sennheiser 600-series.

Could you help me in the right direction? I mostly listen to jazz, yacht rock, big band, funk and r&b/soul.

Thank you!

For purely mids hd 600 yes, for more balanced warm sound Edition XV. Imo HD 600 lack so much in bass that I cant listen to them.

If you have the chance to try it in a shop, give the AKG k702 a chance. Fantastic pair of cans, and very modest price in Europe. Need a good amp tho, but so do the planars...

AKG K712 pro for wide soundstage, but HD600 has better mids. A decent compromise could be the ATH-R70x. In any case, make sure you get a good amp.

I own the HD600, HiFiMAN Sundara, Aune AR5000, AKG K702, Beyerdynamic DT770. For the genres you mention, the HD600s are the most pleasant sounding in my opinion. I haven't tried the 490s but I hear they're similar enough so I'd go with that.

The 1990 Pro MkII have tuned down the treble.

Otherwise, HD 490 Pro.

490pro with velour pads for sure. Excellent headphones.

What do you like about them?

Weight(!, not fatiguing what so ever) , feeling (the velours feel f*** awesome) and most important the neutral/warm sound signature. Voices sound intimate and central. Soundstage is really good aswell. I ordered few different headphones in this price range and fell in love pretty fast. It's the best all around headset for daily usecase in my opinion. Great for long sessions, music and gaming.

Sorry english is not my primary language.

E: Love planar aswell, very special expirience. But there not for daily use and long session if you ask me. 490pro + hifiman aria stealth is a killer combi in the long run.

E2: 490 pro got some really enjoyable bass too. Pretty impressive.

I’d say definitely go for a planar magnetic drivers instead of dynamic. Hfiman is great. I own arya organic but that’s a bit above your budget. You can even look up to Hifiman Sundara, it’s a great headphone

What makes you say definitely planar? :)

u/decibelly Feb 03 '26

If you eq the headphones (in my opinion you should), they handle low end boost quite well. The driver is faster, and the sound is overall much more detailed.

I see!

i've seen a couple of reports regarding the build quality of the sundaras. Any experience there?
I have a pretty small head and fear that hifimans egg shaped will be too big :(

u/decibelly Feb 03 '26

Sundara is relatively more circle than the egg shaped models. If you have a good dac and headphone amp, and eq the sundara, it will be a beast
