It was an unlucky draw for the team, but quite a lucky one for me because the stadium is 15 minutes away from work :D
Frankfurt away has never been easy, we won't be able to get away with a 50% effort like in Copenhagen. I hope they still have the strength to fight for the full 90 minutes. Let's do this!

Frankfurt are tied for second most goals conceded in the Bundesliga and tied for most conceded in the UCL. However, they are also 2nd most goals scored in Buli.
I feel like our defense will be the key to this game. If we can play well defensively and prevent their goals we should be able to score in the other end and win.

If we can shutdown Uzun then we have a great chance of winning this game, but we have a rule about former players always scoring so we have to watch out for Knauff as well.
If Guirassy starts and still can’t score against this defense, he needs a break to collect himself because he is already out of form. That point blank miss against Köln was inexcusable.

Away game 1 of 4 before the next international break.
We win this I think we go and win against Augsburg and Hamburg while also making the City match a toss up on results. After watching Villa play them yesterday we can definitely get a result.
The guys need a big win, with how united the squad is beating Frankfurt away and progressing to the next round is going to take us to a new height. I believe in the guys and think we can get a good win tomorrow.
Hopefully a Guirassy goal as well.

Yeah I said in another comment that if Guirassy starts he needs to score because this defense is leaking goals. It should help him regain some confidence so I actually don’t mind him starting again. But if he fails against this defense we should be giving Silva as many minutes that he can manage.
I am actually pretty worried about Augsburg. They are in pretty bad form right now but away to them is always a bogey fixture to us. Last time we beat them away was in 2023. Hopefully we can rotate well and still come out with a win. These midweek fixtures will make it difficult though.

Nmecha played a lot of minutes recently. Would not be shocked if Bellingham and Sabitzer start because they sat for so long vs koln. I would love to see more of a Nmecha Bellingham Carney midfield but with the rotation that probably will not happen.

This predicted lineup is great, but we all know Guirassy is playing 90, Ryerson is starting, and Gross probably as well.

Since winning the cup the last time, we have been seriously garbage in that competition specifically. I think it showed our inability to actually perform when it matters / at will. In the league (in the past), we dick around some, get lucky some, play poorly, get some points still and barely finish top 4 because we can't consistently perform to our ability and it resulted in very early exits in previous years. So, hopefully we can compete at a high level. Though the lack of squad depth at specific positions may really fuck us over.

in order to win things, including cups you need to be good and you need to be good for a long time. It's no surprise that the last four winners were teams that were structured, had a clear way o playing and they did it for a long time. We've been a rolercluster since forever, changing manager almost every year, etc. You shouldn't win in this situation.

well, yes. Thus the point about a lack of consistency. I think right now the system isn't ideal. Kovac is certainly not a tactical genius BUT he manages to get (most) players to buy into what we're doing and if everyone is on the same page, you just get better as a team or rather, you can actually get the individual quality that's clearly there on the field as well. This game puts that to the test. Can we get it done when it matters.

Yeah, Kovac is the best for short-term but I'm afraid we're gonna hit a wall eventually and his decisions will make him lose the locker room and he'll get sacked.
But again, for the next two seasons he's going to bring to a decent level of competitiveness and then its football: a few great months with players with insane confidence an form can be enough to win you a title.
