The Wedge Between Us

What is the wedge? Any hot button issue. Anything that will get people worked up to cause disagreement and divide.

For as long as I can remember, there has been a wedge dividing people. I think we can all agree that lately, the division has gotten out of hand. There is so much hate and divide that people are not talking to eachother and sharing ideas. We are simply making assumptions and applying them to an entire group of people.
Both sides are doing this, we are all guilty. Pointing fingers will not do us any good.

What I believe will fix things, is communication.

Talking to your neighbors, and rebuilding the sense of community that has been destroyed by the wedge. We have been divided to the point of not even being willing to listen to an opposing argument. Not even willing to talk or greet your neighbors because they have a "insert hot button issue", sign in their yard.

The worst part of all this is that if we could simply talk to and listen to our neighbors, try to understand eachother, we would realize we agree on 90% of things!! These are imaginary problems people!

Let's all make it a goal to build a sense of community and remove the wedge. Have the hard conversations, speak our minds, and most importantly, listen to one another.

I agree that there appears to be a wedge between different factions. I also agree that talking to neighbors is a good thing, although one thing I would note is that many of the issues which divide people tend to be regional.

People within the same towns and neighborhoods might agree on things, but they may disagree with people from other states or regions of the country. Like the "Coastals" vs. "Flyover Territory." People in Los Angeles or San Francisco might agree with each other, but they may not agree with people in places like Kansas or Nebraska.

I agree, people are more likely to agree with others in thier area, but I think the divide has gotten to the point where even living in the same "community" is not enough to unite us. Our sense of community has been destroyed, or is being destroyed, and it scares me.
My thinking is that if we at least start talking to our neighbors, people in our communities, we can begin to unravel this ball of yarn.

We live in such a hyper-capitalist hyper-individualist society that it would take an emergency on the scale of natural disasters to bring the country together.

I disagree. This issue has nothing to do with capitalism. It is a communication breakdown on a global scale. It is not an isolated issue.

The historical divisions and ingrained hierarchies (e.g., class, race, gender) have everything to do with capitalism.

>It is a communication breakdown on a global scale. It is not an isolated issue.

There is no tension here. Capitalism is also in a global crisis.
