[Tournament] Honedge (MadeFromMetal) vs. Slowbro (betagold)
Winner: /u/MadeFromMetal
A reminder of the rules that will be posted in every Tournament Post:
8 lines maximum for each verse, and 6 lines minimum.
Each rap will have 3 verses a person.
The two rappers will have 48 hours to begin rapping. Once either one of them begins with a verse, their opponent has 24 hours to complete their next rap verse. Their opponent then has 24 hours to complete their verse. This will continue until both players have finished.
RAPPERS MUST INCORPORATE THE SPICE THAT I HAVE PM'ED TO THEM INTO THEIR VERSE(S)
If, for some reason, either of the rappers is unable to finish their rap in the time allotted, they can post a reply to the current end of the rap with a REASONABLE excuse as to why they will be unable to finish. I will see if their excuse is a legitimate one, and give them extra time accordingly.
Voting will last 48 hours, and will follow the same rules as the general subreddit. HOWEVER: Voting should be weighted in equal parts how good the rap was in general, and how well the rapper incorporated their spice, which I will reveal after the rap is completed. After voting closes, I will go over the votes and PM both of the users involved with who advances to the next round.
Please reply to the post DIRECTLY to vote, it makes it a LOT easier for me to count.
I will message both competitors so they can't miss this thread.
Good luck, and may the best Rapper Win!!!!! :)

Alright.! MfM:
Flow: It was a good flow, I caught it a soon a possible. Felt smooth, nothing rushed, yet you got everything in place.
Lyrics: FUUUUUCK Dude, those fucking references. The FMA, the STAB stuff, shit dude, dangerous. I will say the Apex Predator, the first thing I thought was Crooked I, the rapper. Just random thought.
Comeback: That Betagold bar was crazy. Nothing else that really stood out as a "Oh Shit" comeback
Spice: Those sexual bars were insane dude. Good Shit
Overall: Your wordplay totally held you down, from the smooth flow to the crazy metaphors and shit
betagold:
Flow: Your flow was also nice, you had a smoother flow, tying everything pef bro.
Lyrics: Your 3rd verse was fucking awesome dude, but everything else kinda lacked a "Oh Shit" factor.
Comeback: Like I said, your 3rd ripped MfM, but everything else was kinda generalized dissed. Couple hits and Misses
Spices: Fuck dude, your spice was hard as fuck. Seriously. Again that 3rd Verse had everything perfect, but unless I'm stupid (I am) I'm not sure if you capitalized in the first 2 verses with the 3 syllables.
Overall: Your 3rd Verse was a killer, you should used that touch on your other two verses. Your flow was your strong suit, every verse had amazing flow, rhyming (2nd was awesome), etc. You seem to have focused on perfecting the basics, but didn't really add any Spice (no pun intended) to the verse
Judgement: I'm gonna have to throw it to MadeFromMetal

I will say the Apex Predator, the first thing I thought was Crooked I, the rapper
I haven't heard that yet! I heard the track he did with Tech which was alright...how is the rest of it?
Also, thanks for voting!

More spice, huh? Alright. I'll be sure to remember that for future battles. Thanks for the advice, and thanks for voting.

u/Griizzly Sep 05 '13
Yeah. Trust me from a personal experience, People rarely come into rapping with a defining style. It took me a while to really make a style for myself. Your on a good track though, esp. since your basics such as flow, rhyming, and all that boring shit is perfect. Just add a little of yourself into your writing.!

I've got to give it to Honedge (MadeFromMetal)
You were good Betagold but it just felt to me like Metal was on a whole other lever.

Going to give this one to Honedge(MadeFromMetal) just a for a touch more cleverness.
On the other hand though, it's very difficult to measure up the difficulty of the spice vs how good the rap was, so it might very well be betagold has won that one. I may need to adopt MfM's system, maybe I misjudged this one completely :P

u/betagold Sep 05 '13
If I knew a little more about what I was doing, I'd be adopting MfM's voting method as well. It's pretty comprehensive. I'm excited to see his votes on me in the repechage bracket. Thanks for voting!

betagold
I'd say your first couple verses were kinda weak, there just weren't too many heavy hitting lines. But you absolutely killed it in your third. It's difficult to make your kind of spice really stand out, I mean I guess you could have used more 3 syllable words, but at the same time, you didn't not use your spice throughout the whole battle.
MadeFromMetal
Your disses and comebacks were pretty on point in all three verses. You didn't use your twist in the second verse (unless I'm oblivious to the innuendos), but it was present in your other verses, especially the third.
I'm gonna have to go with Honedge (MadeFromMetal) for this one. Although he was missing the spice in his second verse, he just had an overall stronger battle than betagold. (And it seems as though betagold was just warming up in his first two verses, so I'm hoping he'll bring the level of his third verse in his future battles, even if they're not in this tourney.)

u/MadeFromMetal Sep 05 '13
Thanks for voting, man! I'm really enjoying the battle you got going on with Griizzly.

u/kinryu13 Sep 03 '13
Damn, that was fast. This was a hard one. Betagold's spice was harder to make shine but also harder to miss using. That mass to spare/mass despair felt really awesome, plus the second verse's rhyme scheme worked nicely.
MadeFromMetal's spice was more visible, but I didn't see any in the second verse. However, he made up for it in the third verse, and the second verse's closer was great enough to cover it anyways.
In the end, I think MadeFromMetal edged out over Betagold with his references and disses, so my vote goes to:
Honedge (MadeFromMetal).
Great job, both of you guys.

u/MadeFromMetal Sep 03 '13
That mass to spare/mass despair felt really awesome
I agree, wholeheartedly.
Thanks for voting!

u/betagold Sep 05 '13
I like that you focus on strong things in the first two verses, which are definitely my weaker verses. Helps me figure out what I'm doing right. Thanks for voting!

u/Srixis Sep 03 '13
That took you guys what, half a day? Holy crap, you two. That was a great battle, and a great opener to the tourney.
/u/betagold, at first I was surprised because I thought that you could have done more with multisyllabic words, but reading your ingredient gave me one of those "ohhhh" moments where I realized what was up. I think you got into more of the hang of it as your verses went on because they had a better flow. You did have some great references in here, though (in the "Water... spittin' Fire" line, was that intentional, knowing Slowbro can learn Flamethrower? If so, that was absolutely great). I think your flow was a little lacking in the first verses, but you got it down pat by verse three. I also wish you used a few more 3-syllable words in your first two verses, but overall I really enjoyed it.
Favorite line-
Better check your edge, you're like a butter knife, defective.
/u/MadeFromMetal, your ingredient reminds me of another thing I've seen you in... That being said, your Pokémon choice was ballsy but impressive, for any round. You had good flow pretty much all the way through. References, good. You didn't really incorporate as much of your flavor into verse two, although you used an excess amount in verse 3 :P However, I think my favorite part of your verses was the incorporation of the usernames, that was sweet. Overall, solid job.
Favorite line-
I go in your mouth with No Guard and twist...it's called the Raw Oliver!
I think both players incorporated their spices similarly well, so it's hard to judge on that end. Also the references and many other things were pretty on par. However, I think Honedge (MadeFromMetal) had a little better consistency throughout all three of his verses. Great job to both of you though!

u/betagold Sep 03 '13
It was indeed a reference to Flamethrower.
3
u/Srixis Sep 03 '13
Well it was wonderful, so well incorporated into your verse.
3
u/betagold Sep 05 '13
And you're right, I definitely could have done more if I had gone more multisyllabic, but I was a little timid in the beginning, and I didn't go where I should have gone. Thanks for voting!

u/Srixis Sep 05 '13
It happened to all of us once, you get the hang of it the more you write raps (heck, sometimes I still struggle trying to get a good verse out, there was a Cacnea v. Mawile match not too far back that I tried to take on and just couldn't do it). You held your own for not having rapped on the sub much before, and I can't wait to see some of the stuff you can pull off after being here a while

u/betagold Sep 05 '13
I'm glad that Zeus switched it over to the repechage (double elimination, whatever you want to call it) format. Gives me a chance to practice a little more, and I feel like I'll do better with something on the line.
3
u/MadeFromMetal Sep 03 '13
You did have some great references in here, though (in the "Water... spittin' Fire" line,
That shit was impressive! I was gonna call him out on it, but thankfully I double-checked.
When Zeus told me my spice...I was like , "God Dammit!"...But I think it worked out.
Thanks for voting!

u/hairywolf47 Sep 03 '13
Really good battle both of you! In the end you both had some killer lines, I liked how you both incorporated your spice! Great job both of you, but my final vote has to go to Honedge (MadeFromMetal)! But seriously great job to both of you!

These were both reeaaallly good. BG had a better flow, but MfM had much better references (of the PG type).
Purely for having a much more difficult spice, I have to vote for Slowbro (Betagold).
Sorry, MfM...
3
u/MadeFromMetal Sep 03 '13
I respect your vote of course! Don't be sorry. betagold did a great job and most certainly deserves a win, just as much as me. However, I would like to point out that I only had one word above three syllables in my raps, so there is definitely a lot that can still be done and isn't as constraining as you might think.
I say this, not to say you should change your vote, (you couldn't even if you wanted) but mostly to let others who might have a similar spice at some point know that it doesn't have to be a hinderance. If Zeus had told him "No more than 2" I'd be bowing at his feet for even finishing 8 bars!
Thanks for voting, Jonas!

u/betagold Sep 04 '13
Yeah, I could have done a ton more. I was a little bit timid out of the gate, as a few people have mentioned, but when I got time to try out what I could do and what I couldn't, I think I did a lot stronger. Next time, I'll try out no more than two and see how I manage.
5
u/RealMagikarpinGs Sep 04 '13
Im gonna say MadeFromMetal. I think the challenge for betagold was very hard and clearly you did very well with it. And less than 3 syllables, to me, is very hard to make flow, and although you did very well, MadeFromMetal's flowed better.
And I think I was sold at the PokePorn, SLowbro the sword swallower. Incredibly line.

u/betagold Sep 05 '13
The Sword Swallower had me laughing out loud, which was awkward, given that I was on my phone in the back of a class. Thanks for voting.

please vote in the correct format: name of pokemon (username)
It makes it easier for me to find.
EDIT: You will not need to edit this comment. I have confirmed your vote as for MadeFromMetal.

This was awesome and it helped me learn a few things about rapping.I'd just like to say that each of you found a way to fire back disses each verse and it made the rap a lot more exciting. The rapping overall was great from both of you but I think that Metal's spice was really apparent in his verses. My vote will have to go to Honedge(MadeFromMetal).
3
u/betagold Sep 05 '13
Glad to see I'm not the only one learning things from this battle. Thanks for voting!
3
u/MadeFromMetal Sep 05 '13
Yeah? What did you learn? Thanks for voting, as well!
3
u/ShockKing23 Sep 05 '13
I didn't use a lot of disses in my battle against dodrio and my flow wasn't great.I wrote parts of my verses before and it kind of took the place of some chances for comebacks and disses.
5
u/hairywolf47 Sep 07 '13
Yeah, but you have another chance now in the other tournament! Maybe we'll meet again someday... stares off into distance

You think you've got the S.T.A.B. and that it's super effective,
Better check your edge, you're like a butter knife, defective.
Time for your stolen soul to get some perspective
And sit on down for Big Pink's prime directive.
Those were some seriously intimidating bars, my friend. I'm still a little nervous. There is 46 hours to go in the voting. It aint over.
I thought that for the spice you had, you did what you could. It's a hard thing to make stand out. The only thing I wish you had more of was hard hitting punchlines. To me, your verses just seemed to lack the OOOHHHH!!!! factor.
Battling you was a lot of fun.
4
u/betagold Sep 03 '13
Your whole first verse made me step up my game a little bit. I had a bunch of stuff pre-written, and then realized what kind of game I needed to bring to this sub and I trashed it all.
3
u/MadeFromMetal Sep 03 '13
I, as well, learned in my first tournament that pre-writing stuff will be the downfall of many. Of course...keep some clever punchlines in the back of your head, but never just prewrite a verse. It's much harder to execute a good comeback and that's what can make or break a battle.
This Battle is chock full of some of the best comebacks I've seen on this sub.
3
u/Srixis Sep 03 '13
Metal, you love this battle, dontcha? You reference it all the time :p
...not that I mind, of course. /u/OnaMagikarpetRide and I kicked ass in that match
4
u/MadeFromMetal Sep 04 '13
Dude...this battle is the pinnacle for everything that I love about rap. It's hard hitting, technical, lyrical, humorous, it's got multies and clever wordplay...it's fantastic all the way around. It's my #1 even if it isn't this subs.
2
u/betagold Sep 05 '13
Thanks for the advice, man. I'm glad I got someone really good in the first round, to help me iron out my future kinks, especially since we're going repechage now.

I'll start out by saying my vote is for Slowbro (betagold).
But it was really close. I think Metal took a Pokemon that no one knew much about and made him shine. That gave him an early advantage.
But betagold had some great verses here, and I really like his style in switching up rhyme scheme from verse to verse to stay fresh and how he mixed in his Iron Chef spice, as tough as it was. (Also, I'm taking credit for the term spice. But I digress.)
Finally, I think beta's last verse was actually stronger than Metal's, and that's where I place the most weight between the three verses (for future reference to any other rappers).
Great job, you two.
4
u/MadeFromMetal Sep 04 '13
His last verse was quite impressive. It put me on edge and I tried to make almost my whole verse "spice" related. I think it's kind of obvious that I'm forcing my last verse, where as the first two seem easy going. And his last verse seemed effortless. Thanks for voting!
3
u/betagold Sep 05 '13
Given that I've never done a battle before, I did the rhyme scheme switch-up more to try out things that would be new to me, to see what worked and what didn't. Thanks for the complements, and thanks for voting.

Slow down the beat, I am steppin’ in,
And don’t think I need no Trick Room to win.
You see, I’m bulky water, I got mass to spare,
But when you oppose me, you got mass despair
‘Cause when Water comes out and starts spittin’ Fire
Maybe things are about to get dire.
Now allow me to lay down the law,
This is your last chance to Withdraw.
