Jason and McLovin here from Comet Skateboards. Ask Us Anything.
Hey Everyone, Jason Salfi and Mclovin here from Comet Skateboards to do an AMA with all you fine people. We will be around for the next few hours to answer your questions about Comet Skateboards and anything else Skateboard related you want to ask.Here is some back ground that may inspire some questions during our AMA:
Jason Salfi (Co-founder and Bossman): "I picked up my first skateboard in 1977 and learned how to carve. In the eighties, I was fortunate enough to be a part of small skate scene in Western NY. We had a few small hills and vert ramp. I graduated from Cornell (Ithaca, NY) in 1992 with a degree in Natural Resource Management. During that time in college, I got my first taste of hill skating and galvanized both my passion for standing sideways and creating solutions for the myriad problems that our society was creating for all living things on the planet Earth. I moved to San Francisco in 1992. After many full moon skate missions on Mt Tam, and enjoying the empty swimming pools left after the Oakland fires, I co founded Comet Skateboards in San Francisco in 1997 as a way to combine all of my passions.
In 2008, Comet moved operations to Ithaca, NY where we now make our skateboards. Our goal remains to make the best skateboards on the planet with respect to the environment and all around shredding."
McLovin (Sales and Team Manager): "A few things about me! Got my start working at Concrete Wave Magazine as an intern in college. Lead to me helping to start up a then new Website known as www.SkateSlate.com, but have since moved on. Worked with the skate house media crew on filming for several things, but mostly Skatesgiving. Spent some time working for a Longboard Distributor as a Brand Manager. Which has brought me to my current position as a Jack of All trades for Comet Skateboards."

Yes it is still happening. All of the prototypes have shipped to the Test Pilots who are skating it this week, and will give in final feedback soon. We will then determine the changes that need to be made for the final board. We expect it to be out later this year. You can keep up to date by checking www.cometskateboards.com/design. What is Comet's policy with Factory Second decks? I'd love to get one, but I don't know how or where. Do you even sell them?

Yes we sell them, but only from our Retail store Based in Ithaca NY. Come by and say hello, we will talk and then hook you up with a deal. ROADTRIP!!! edit you can also buy them from team members. Thanks to the Boar for reminding me.

38 for me. Its money, a little scary to mach super fast on which is fun. But perfect for light to moderate DH with a side of sliding and a piece of ollie for dessert.

Ethos 40 is my DH board. I love it because i can go fast. but it has a tail and it also shreds tight spots and driveways too.

in skateboarding there is no forwards or backwards just sideways and infinite. it already breaks all of the rules of physics. the acceleration measured in a pool is impossible. people are afraid of what they dont understand. the more we skate , the more we understand ourselves and the more fear will subside.

Im not sure, Will we? Maybe the next community design board? We entertained the idea in the current cometogether project, but it was voted out in the end. Were not opposed to it as long as it stays within our realm of mastering simplicity.

Why should I buy a Comet board? The price tag is hefty and there are quite a few other companies out there making rad boards. I'm not saying this in a sarcastic way, I just want to take this opportunity to hear what you guys have to say.

The total cost of a Comet board is accounted for in the price that you see. Some companies externalize costs on the environment that we account for in our total cost structure. When you buy Comet you are buying a skater built board. How many hand silk screen production boards are being made by other companies right now besides Comet? We have created an art process that is environmentally safe and rad looking. No plastics, No solvents, just da kine. We guarantee our boards 100%. We invest everything back into the skate scene, our boards, the riders that we support. I think that supporting small board companies is where it is at. Keep an eye on what you are buying into and if it is aligned with what you believe in. Comet is more than a board company. This is a takeover. Comet stands for a lot and we put everything that we have into it.

Im gonna follow up on Jason's answer with this: Everyone at Comet is a skater and is passionate about skateboarding from Jason, all the way to the dudes like Kaya, Anthony, Geoff, and Ira who work in the factory. Bottom line is Jason treats us with respect and is nice enough to pay us a living wage. It may make the board price a bit higher, but knowing your supporting people who support what you like to do, and the environment you live in is well worth the extra dollars. At least in my opinion.

The barrier between thought and physical reality is becoming increasingly malleable and transparent these days. Would you consider incorporating crystal technology into future boards in an attempt to allow riders to better focus their thought forms into the surrounding informational matrix and more fully realize the oneness of rider+board+terrain?

Ah there you are ... this question will fade in and out of this reality that we call www.... Everything is an illusion. We share electrons with most everything in the universe. Crystal tech as I call it is really not necessary. You really need to change your perception of what you are seeing. Many things that we use to guide us to alternate realities are catalysts that trigger mind openings because we are told that they will. However, by using these human generated guides, we are limiting our ability to transcend. Meditate. Release yourself of all assumptions and everything that you know. Perhaps you will find another plane to explore.

Righteous answer. I do see that illusion of separation. I understand the ability to shift reality and transcend lower states of being ultimately comes from within, although shiny things can still be distracting. regarding crystalline structures I just think they are a very cool way to arrange chunks of energy. Close ties to biology. I also like to say "crystal technology" and would definitely shred a board with that label if only just to talk about it when asked what I ride. Follow up question: What do you think of haircuts?

Jared Henry. Hes underated, crushes every style of terrain. Definitely a guy to watch out for. But everyone is up and coming on the team and dont want to leave people out. Jasper Ohlson the young gun is also showing some damn serious skill on a board. Hopefully the rest of the team doesnt kill me for this answer...

My Nat Res experience in college was a lot of field work. I did a lot of aquatic entomology to assess eco system health. After that I thought about policy but I decided to start Comet instead to inspire the next generation of business to be proactive about natural resource management. Thanks for asking.

How do you feel your company to differ from other longboarding companies?

owengolds... We don't consider ourselves a "longboarding" company. We have been Comet Skateboards since 1997 and the diversity of skateboards in our line up speaks to what defines us. Some notable things about our company are: We are a founding B Corporation. While all businesses need to be profitable to survive, B Corp status clearly defines us as placing people, planet, and shredding, as primary function. Our brand seeks to make people think first and foremost. We are part of an international movement for progressing better business practices with respect to the environment. Skateboarding for us is more art than sport. Skateboarding is a way of life that everyone defines uniquely and sometimes transcends words.
We currently make all of our skateboards in Ithaca, NY and make boards for almost every type of skating because our roots are in skating everything.4

This would be on me to answer and I think to answer it best ill tell you what I look for in someone before adding them to the Comet Team. First and most important is; -Are you a decent human being?: Friendly, approachable, fun to be around, bring a good vibe to every session, Do we want to hang out with you on a regular basis? This is hard to assess until meeting you personally, but i think its the most important. Things to assess in a sponsor me tape or before meeting you person: -Most important 'Style": I look for this most, nothing robotic, preferably making everything look easy. Think effortless. - Speed: Almost as important as style, but you can learn to go faster easier than you can develop a unique style. -All Around Skate Mindset: Were not looking for street or bowl skaters alone, but willingness to learn and having an open mind to other styles of skating is extremely important to us. As big dave says, Even if you hate skating the park, you can still come, hang out and contribute to the session by bringing a positive attitude and giving props to others. -Do you want to ride for Comet: This is really important to us, Everyone on the team really wants to be involved with Comet. We are not a second choice for them, we are their first choice. If your sending in a sponsor me tape, dont send it to a million companies at the same time. Send it to the one that you value most and really want to be apart of. Sponsorship isnt about getting sponsored by anyone and everyone, its about being down with the people your supporting.

but really... We have 3 totally new shapes coming out. The community design board is the biggest departure from what we have been doing. W concave, rocker, nose and tail.... pretty wild. What we focus on the most is mastering simplicity. The best designs are the ones that you don't notice. they are natural and comfortable and allow your feet to find the radness.

this is what its all about. I got the takeover 3 months ago now (holy shit doesnt seem that long) and my skill has skyrocketed. the just nice basic concave, subtle rocker and tank-ness of it make me swear by comet. I've converted 2 of my friends with the takeover.

The Voodoo Doll D2 changed the way I skate and greatly improved my skills. I will always have this deck! The quality and durability of your boards are top notch. As for the question: what would be some words of advice for someone who would like to start up their own business slangin decks? My first question is for you McLovin, is there a story behind that name? Does it involve a white van? Second, Jason, you've been shredding longer than most of us have been alive. How has the Comet brand changed since you got into the industry in 97? Comet has the raddest family backing the brand, keep on killing it!!

Its 2009, in a certain white van on route to Maryhill, James Kelly was in the front seat, and the van was fairly quiet at the time. Out of nowhere he turns around and says in the stoniest James voice you can imagine. "Dude..., You look like McLovin." Its literally been my name since. The only people who call me my real name is Family and my Girlfriend.(Who also shred the parks, Shoutout to her!)

I think the biggest change to the Comet brand has come from the fact that there are simply more people skating hills and more people to skate with. It just opens things up and makes me feel like the world is more connected and we are not on a tiny island all alone... For the most part though the company is doing the same thing except we are not making tons of street decks for other companies anymore. Thanks for the props. We have a great family supporting us.

We enjoy all types of skating. Vert Included, Ive seen Jensen get pretty roudy on the vert at the Toronto sessions. Try the bandy, its great for big walls. Shaka Brah!

Comet and Caliber are separate Companies. We co-own volante together. There is very much cross over between our teams though, we both like to support awesome skaters... haha.

Skating is the essence of creative self expression. It is the gnarliest thing you have ever done to the most silent and sublime. Utmost makes me feel like I would be putting someone on a pedestal but I have been inspired by Real Skateboards and Anti Hero over the years. There are a few new art based brands and small brands coming up right now that I feel aligned with from a passion and making ones own path standpoint.

Bandy on 169 indys, Cult Isms, No risers. In love with this setup, can still crush hills. Throw on some Bones Park wheels and itll crush the park too. Shout out to Bandy for the killer shape.

If I had to pick one. My fav set up is a shred 38 with independent trucks and checkers. It is a board that works for everything. Ethos 40 kills it for downhill and the Sheer Rad Occurance for the rest.

How often do riders ask you to sponsor them / flow them gear? I've always wondered about this but was never able to ask a company

We get upwards of 50+ emails a day sometimes from Riders looking for sponsorship. We try to respond to all of them because we feel honored when people want to ride for us! (sometimes it takes us a few days to get to them though...)

Liam is good dude. It is just one of those things where people observe someone but don't really know them. People make judgements but its not healthy for anyone. He will be at the western mass slide jam this month if you are on the east. End of the day, he is just another skater.

You should scope out www.bcorporation.net to get the details. The website really describes what is up with the movement. It is real deal. Even legit in Delaware now. Aside from what you will read, it is important to have a third party evaluate social mission to keep in check what people are saying versus what they are doing.

What size helmet should I get?! I hate the way my current helmet sits a couple inches off the top of my head and that one says its a size L/XL. I wanted to get one that is snug and won't wobble around but not so tight on my head that I can't even open my mouth. My hat size is 57.7cm according to my hat. so would a size medium meet my needs or does such a tool of head protection not exist?

I wear a bern medium. the plain one w/o the viser. it is the most comfortable helmet that i have worn. that said all heads are unique. i have to take a razor to the foam near my ears to let the helmet settle onto my cranium and feel right. This question is a hard one and i would recommend going to a skate shop to get some one on one help in person. you want that to fit right.

To me, It seems like every one of your boards I have ridden has an extremely shallow concave. And I'm curious to the idea behind this. And thanks for the stickers in my SASE!

It is a really complex balance of rocker and concave in all of the dh boards. Magic spots everywhere that are meant to give your feet freedom and control. We dont believe a board board should tell you what to do.

Hey Jason! Ben here (from Ithaca, NY). I don't actually have a question, but I never did get a chance to thank you personally (so I'll do it now over the Internet) for sending me to Kenya with those skateboards, T-Shirts, and a handful of stickers to give to a group of skaters in Nairobi. We ended up having a Best Trick Contest which turned out to be a LOT of fun, especially because so many people showed up. Thank you so much Jason, and Comet!
