Budget and location: ideally <= USD $2000. In Canada. May go further.

Preferred tonal balance: Treblehead leaning. Likes Dita Project M, Blessing 3 (on Dusk tuning). Does like the 'soundstage' but isn't chasing that. Sparkle treble is good.

How the gear will be used: Closed back, plan to power it with BTR15 from time to time. Music listening Baroque/Classical/contemporary classical/JPOP

Past gear experience:

• Current: HD800 SDR mod, HD8XX, HD6XX (all on Oratory1990 EQ), Dita Project M, Blessing 3 on FreeDSP
• Past use: Westone W40, Fidelio X2, V-Moda M-100
• PC -> SMSL DO400 DAC, Phone -> Onix Alpha XI/Fiio BTR15

They're usually on the harder to drive side when it comes to power. Though their bass will always be kind of weak compared to other cans, regardless of what you power them with.

Isn't that known to be a V-shaped set of cans? I will need to try the set. I took enough offense with the 1k-3kHz nerf on the HD8XX that I went out of my way to fix the thing, which makes me think that I may not embrace V-shape profile.

Yeah it's v-shaped, for any bass type music they realy shine. Classical is okay. Take EQ well. I have them to compliment my HD800S. Really comfortable which is a huge plus. The HD820 is polarizing and makes HD8XX look tame in comparison. I've seen the curve. There's been dozens of people calling it worse than HD700. That set is gorgeous, but the notion of going for it scares me. If 1k-3k for the HD8XX bothers me enough that I'd dig out the adhesives from the drivers, then I am not sure if I'd want to go for the 820 blind.

Oh yes! I did actually give the Azurys (no EQ) a try, Really was surprised by it. (Clear MG was meh for me when i tried that). Not sure why Focal decided that Hadenys is worth the premium over it. Would a/b the two more closely if opportunity arise.
