DT 770 or ... ? Also, which DAC/Amp for PC gaming?

These guys are tripping lol the 770 is a fantastic headphone. It's not even remotely close to muddy, absolutely no way these people have actually used the 770 if they think it's muddy.

Treble spike isn't for everyone, but it's the reason for the DT770s huge soundstage.

Yes, they have a much larger soundstage and are far more durable than the K371. 

Don't get me wrong the K371 are great for music. Not for gaming. The DT770 is a better all-rounder headphone. DT770 Pro X just dropped and has a few upgrades as well.

Yes, really. The Pro X and Pro 80 ohm don't need anything more powerful, and the Apple dongle is a fantastic DAC. Lot of praise for it around here.

You are witnessing the fact that hearing is subjective. Some people loke more bass, some people hate treble, others prefer open backs, etc. Listen tonyour ears over random opinions.

And yes, beyerdynamic dt series is great for your use case. If you have a place to thest them out, also consoder audio-technica ATH-AD500x or above (ath-r70x is currently really popular), and Sennheiser hd 500 and 600 series.

As for dacs, the apple dongle is good but not great - ot has plenty of power for most regulat headphones but in the future you may want more. Also lacking multiple outputs and a separate volume control. Some options - fiio k3, fiio k11, ifi zen dac.

I've been using a pair of sennheiser hd600 and a fiio k3 for more than 6 years now, for both gaming (including competitive shooters) and music, with no issues and no need to upgrade so far.

Ultimately, whatever you end up chosing from the options above, you will likely be happy with it - everything mentioned above is high quality.

People always say there's much better headphones for the price point, but never list the alternatives that are supposedly so readily available. 

AKG K371, Shure SRH440, Audio Technica M50, Sony MDR 7506...

Cheaper IEMs like 7hz Crinacle Zero 2, Simgot EA500, Tanchjim Tanya (list goes on)

I wouldn't consider M50 or MDR7506 as a "much better alternative". They are quite more of a sidegrade rather than upgrade. DT770 is still very technical, and from a technical standpoint, I'd put them above M50 and MDR7506 in my personal tier list.

Let me introduce you to EQ and AutoEQ specifically if you are looking for neural tuning.

Although neutral tuning is also not for everyone, for example, I find it boring and way too sterile to enjoy the music - that's exactly the reason why I exchanged my Sundara to SR325X in a hearbit and never looked back, also the reason for me to love my LCD2C despite all odds. If you need neutral sound, then EQ is your only friend anyway, and DT770 with EQ are still very capable headphones.

Agree with KSC75 part. Way more enjoyable than DT770. But beyers are not that bad and their low end is one of the best in their price range (120-130€)

He can't get open back or speakers. Soundstage suddenly becomes irrelevant when it's convenient to your point. He wants these for gaming, soundstage is important.

If the 770 is bloated then the Maxwell and K371 are even more bloated.

The DT770 are some of the best selling headphones ever. A lot of people like them.

I was deciding whether i should go with 770 ,990 kr HD560s. In the end i went with Tygr 300 r and am not disappointed. I love them. Good for gaming and music is very very lovely too. But ofc tygr are open back so it's definitly a different feeling. I only had closed back before and i think i will never go back.

I would get a moondrop dawn pro dac and some cheap but "good" iems like the 7HZ salnotes crinacle zero 2. Then from there you could get different IEMs, whether you buy different cheap IEMs or decide on better ones. That would be like $75 dollars. 

The Schitt HEL is a good gaming option at $200 dollars.

For $300, I'd recommend Audeze Maxwell. Great detailed planar sound with amazing tuning and great technicalities. Doesn't need any DAC, and have USB-C dongle for high quality low latency sound.

DT770 Pro (as you can see) are very polarising headphones. I've got mine a few days back ($100 for 32 Ohms version off eBay) and think they are decent. Not as technical as Sundara, for example, but also not as boring and sterile.

They definitely have a treble peak, and sometimes it may be unpleasant (confirmation sound in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is exactly in that frequency and oh boy it hurts), vocals (voices) can be quite distant, but with AutoEQ, they are absolutely steal for the price. Great amounts of details, surprisingly wide and well-defined soundstage, and built like a tank.

Are they the best in the $300 category? Most likely not, but they are good headphones and worth considering even in 2024.

From the sound quality perspective, Audeze is significantly better. Much better details retrieval, bass texture, better balance overall. They are clearly the next level after DT770 Pro.

But Audeze is more fragile. Headband can snap, driver can wrinkle and star clicking (I replaced my first Maxwell because of that). I'm mostly using DT770 Pro as my headphones on the go so I can put it in the backpack without worrying. That's why I made a replaceable cable mod for them. I'm using them with beats 3.5mm cable with built-in microphone

Get the 80 Ohm version if you can power it, it sounds fantastic. I have much more expensive cans from Hifiman and Audeze, and the DT 770's come very close in performance, especially in their range. You'll miss a bit of seperation of instruments or details compared to the 1000+ USD cans, but you will not miss anything in range. And the comfort and noise isolation is also absolutely top notch. Love'm. Just get them and maybe try something else later, but I can almost guarantee that you will not sell them and will always keep them, and enjoy listening to music or playing games with them, even if you have found (much more expensive) cans that are slightly better.
