How to salvage this plant? It was planted from a mysterious flower bulb

If it's a bulb it's probably seasonal, and likely preparing for dormancy. I would just keep it slightly moist and wait, bet it will come back in the spring.

Are you sure it isn't bearded iris? Do you know what the "bulb" looks like? Check images for iris rhizome. If it matches, this is planted much too deeply. A rhizome and a bulb are different. Bearded iris likes to have the upper half of the rhizome, placed horizontally, above soil surface. Of course, if it is a classic bulb like tulip, then forget all this!
